MK6 is due 2004, PS3 and XBox2 are due 2005, at best. So we're safe in the current platforms. smile

Then again, wasn't MK:DA supposedly due years before it was finally released? I can't remember ever hearing an expected release date more than six months ahead that was actually released in time

MKDA got really delayed, because they wanted to redeem themselves out of MK4's reputation. Therefore, they had to fully build a game engine (graphics, gameplay, sound, menus, etc), a story, some characters. All that takes years. They also had some plans that they didn't finish (eg. Stage Fatalities) in time, and they too cost time. Also, some animations were hand-drawn, and that takes lots of time. Add that to the motion capture, the investigation (names for new characters, martial arts, weapons) and the design, and you have work for say...3 years? Add the testing and other delays to that, and you have something really close to what took them. And they did a great job. OH, and don't forget the entire team restruction and hiring needed before even starting the damn thing.
This time around, they already have a capable team, a solid engine (that should only need some tweaks), great characters to start with (excluding the new ones, who they have to completely work them out), and the confirmation that they are already actively working on it, added to the fact that Midway probably won't give them much time after the deadline, and you got a pretty accurate release date.

Apparently Midway is in a bit of a financial hole. I agree with a lot of what sputnik said, they've already got an awesome engine, which they could further tweak and improve on, add new characters, content, etc. They don't need to build a new engines(which takes a LONG, LONG time) and their team is ready to go and already working on it. Plus, MK: DA did sell very well for them, so I'm not at all suprised that they want to get another MK title out there so soon to help them out financially.
