Do you think that enough has been done to distinguish the old pallette-swapped ninjas from one another?

Even now, so many years after MKT, I still see people referring to that group of characters as 'the ninjas', despite the alterations to their appearances, and it makes me wonder.
At times I think yes, and at times I think no.
Going through them one by one...
Sub-Zero: Most definitely. It's been a long time since I even considered him as one. I see him as a grandmaster now, his appearance just emanates that feel. His new look doesn't even make me think of 'ninjas' in the least. It feels like he's just completely risen above the ninja archetype.
Scorpion: If there has to be one person who keeps the gist of the original appearance, I suppose it would have to be him. But these days he looks more...'polished' than altered. Don't get me wrong, it suits him. But I feel a bit more could be done to elevate him.
Reptile: Right up there with Sub-Zero. Nothing even close to a ninja now. I don't think I have to explain why.
Ermac: 50/50 here. While I do adore his new outfit, I still think 'ninja' when I look at it, although I do find he has a certain 'Arabian flair' to him. Undecided.
Smoke: (Sigh) Unfortunately, he was switched from sharing a ninja appearace to a cyber-ninja appearance. So, no. Well, I suppose looking like 2 other characters is better than looking like 5 or 6. But I sincerely believe that MKD will change this, and he'll blow us all away.
Noob Saibot: I don't really want to judge, but from that one screenshot we've seen of him in his regular outfit, I'm not too impressed. He kinda looks like Snake-eyes from GI Joe now, methinks. I'll wait for more. But I'm very disappointed with his alternate. Very little change from the old games - it makes me think of the MKII uniform. Not a bad thing, but so much more could be done. If that weird alien-shape he had for an alternate in MK4 was what he really looked like, why not do something with that?
Rain - Hasn't been in, so I guess he really is still just a ninja to us, more than anyone else. But I'd welcome him back with a new look, as much as I hate him. I can envision him with shining light purple armor, long black hair, and no mask.
What do you guys think? Could anything more be done to really seperate these guys from one another?

I think they have done a better job distinguishing between Kitana and Mileena than they have with the male ninjas. If you place the renders of Kitana and Mileena next to each other, you would have no idea that they originated as the same colour swapped character.
I think the male ninjas are starting to look alot different...Sub Zero looks ace now. But it seems to have taken the guys longer to completely change. Scorpion still looks very similar to his original concept from MK1, but thats fine.
Was there a reason why they looked the same in the first place? I know Kitana and Mileena were twins/clone...just don't remember about the male characters.

I think they all look great now and they are all different from each other even if there are some ninja references still there. the most notable changes are that of Sub-Zero and Ermac who look awesome now. Noob and Scorpion are stil ninja like but both have completely different outfits. As for the females, you cannot say Millena and Kitana are similar anymore. They look nothing alike now. Mileena looks so much better.

when i 1st saw noob's deception outfit i thought they'd done a soul calibur and got sam fisher from splinter cell in deception
i have no problems with scorpion's or sub-sero's appearences, it looks like they've made a geniune good effort with ermac to make him stand out, he looks kool, i suppose noob's costume has changed over the years as much as his story has developed, he's a pretty mysterious character i'd like to find out more about him before i decide whether he is an actually ninja or not.
i'm sure they'd do a good job with rain looking at the current ninjas but i hate him too much to want him back, ever.
