Dont Count on Backwards Compatibility... interview with Peter Moore.
Interview by Kikizo
It's all there. (thanks to Jeff Greeson at TRMK)
Peter Moore thinks for us in this article, so we don't have to. We, the consumer obviusly are not concerned with backwards compatibility. Plus they already "over delivered" making more games backwards compatible then they should have. Like 200 or 300 games. And of those more than 1/4 actualy work well! (we all know how deception was compatible... NOT) here's trmk's response to Deception being compatible on 360 if you have not seen it yet: http://www.trmk.org/features/Mortal_Kombat_Deception_on_Xbox_360/
Games are still exclusively being released onto x-box. Many people have just bought a 360 and do not have a regular x-box. Microsoft makes enough money, why the hell do they need to force us to buy an x-box to play games decently?
How does this relate to Armageddon? According to the interview, it looks like they are going to stop trying, and see if future games happen to work on a 360 by chance.... This means it's unlikely that Armageddon will be playable on the 360.

One thing that Xbox 360 users with hard drives benefit from is backwards compatibility with Xbox 1 titles, but some gamers have been underwhelmed by the volume and quality of games that are compatible on the new system. It doesn't look like much is going to change either, based on Moore's latest comments in the interview. "Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible."
He added: "more are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compat."

Actualy I don't have any x-box yet if that's what you meant. I don't know what system to get now. 360 is going to have UMK3 online but the orig is getting armageddon.
Ready? This is what MS wants to hear: ""I'll just have to get both!""

Darn, oh well, at least I kept my old xbox too, but this means I won't be able to go online

one of the reasons i still don't have a 360 is because of their backwards compatibility (or lack there of)....over delivered! ! ! my ass. the ps3 maybe totally overpriced, but at the same time it doesn't just disregaurd the hundreds (and for others thousands) of dollars spent on games....
but let me stop before this becomes an x box vs playstation war. in all honesty i'm still on the fence. but this is definatly one of the deciding factors.
in mk:a related statements- that sucks balls

Actually, the PS3 is gonna have BC abilities similar to the 360's. But that doesn't mean Sony is gonna give up on the consumers like M$ is. I spent 600 dollars on my 360, including new controllers and and a couple of games, hoping that M$ would do a good job on the BC list. Now that they're giving up i don't know what i'm gonna do.
If the PS3 has most of their Ps2 and PS1 games BC , then i'll probably sell my 360 and get me a PS3. When i have the money.

This just shows how Microsoft doesn't give a shit about it's consumers. That's very clear from my point of view...

Yeah, I found that to be obsurd, 290 of the 300 backwards compatiable games are terrible and I haven't heard of a lot of them. I have both a 360 and an OG Xbox (only cuz I cant let go of the first one). I am one of the most loyal MK fans ever, but you can bet your ass I wont be buying that bullshit when it come out, if its not on the 360. Its pretty F*@&$% up that I spent 500 bucks on a system that hasn't delivered one game that I like and to date has only one compatiable game (Halo) that I own, and I have quite a few games. I bought Tiger Woods Golf . . . . . shitty game, it only has 6 courses and the story mode is bunk. I'm starting to question the integrity of the 360 and its developers. Don't get me wrong I want to love it, but because of crap like this it gets harder each day.
sorry about the rant.

Yeah, they are both using software to emulate the classic games, which is a dumb move. The reason why ps2 had so many ps1 compatible games (all but 3 I think) was becuase they used hardware. Sony basicly had a built in psx in the ps2.
Even though using hardware would save them time and money from making updates, they would have less sales because the 'hardware' would drive up the cost of the system (they would have to charge more), which equals less buyers, equals less $$$$$. So you could see where they are coming from... the money side.
Maybe it's just me, because I own every system I've ever owned and they all still work, but backwards compatibility isn't an issue for me. When I get my PS3, I'm still gonna have my PS2. Just like I still have my PSX.
This attitude from Microsoft is just what I would expect. Oh well.

Aside from how they're treating the BC games, Microsoft is actually doing great. They fix any broken system for free. Including shipping and handling. At least they actually reveal information when asked. And what they're doing with Live is just fantastic.

If MS are not prepared to do it, then the smart thing would be to open source the BC programming and pass it onto the game developers of old X-Box titles.
Theroy being that some game developers will still want to squeze a few extra quid/dollers out of a title they have recently made for the X-Box until they release the next version on 360.
So developer make the BC patches and really that should make everyone happy.
Consumers happy > They still get to play their favourite X-box game on a shiny new 360.
Game Developers happy > More money for them as people still interested in getting X-Box titles
Microsoft should be happy > More money on X-Box game sales due to licencing and with increased BC, I would think more would be interested in getting the 360, so even more money!

I'm thinking the same thing.
They should seek our wants 100%, since they are working for the consumer. But, odds are they have more than enough money to even begin to care to fix the problem.

So, you got a 360 to play Xbox games!? okay.
Anyway, most of the BC games that I've played work just fine. Am I surprised that MS isn't as worried about BC as they had previously claimed, not really. Would it have been nice, yes. Also, is Sony doing what the consumer wants 100%, I don't think so. It's all about money... for both companies as far as I'm concerned. If that weren't true then Sony wouldn't be shoving a new, unproven format down our throats (especially since almost 85% of the gaming community don't even own their own HDTV) just so they can have a good chance of winning the next-gen dvd format war. Let's be fair to both sides here people. Their each making their own mistakes.
But regarding the news, yes it is very unfortunate for those 360 owners who sold their old Xbox to get the new one. I feel for you.

That's a really good idea. Unless there's some technical/financial/legal reason they can't, it doesn't make sense for MS to not do just that.

best response in the whole thread. Great thoughts, great business sense.

When it comes to pure 100% BC, Nintendo will own the other two easily. This whole thing with MK:A NOT being BC sucks for 360 fans, what are you going to do?
PS3 won't play ALL PS2 games either, so I can't see someone trading in their 360 for that reason alone...I guess if you're a PS fan boy then I can see.
MK:A is one of the few most likely GOOD games coming out for the soon to be done Xbox.I guess it depends how loyal you are to MK and whether or not you traded in your xbox already for a 360.I bet LOTS of fans now are pissed they did that expecting BC at some point.
If you're the gamer who's looking for advancment out with the old, in with the new then you probably don't care about MK:A, although it's a bummer if it turns out to be a great game and the best fighter this year which I believe it will be and you don't have an xbox 360.
If you're a collector(like me) you never trade in your older systems then you have no worries. It's times like this I do that and now it will pay off.
A 360 will come down the road for me, it's too expensive for me right now anyway....once UMK3 comes out then I'll worry about getting one and only for that reason and MK8 and beyond.

Did i say that? Did i say i bought a 360 just to play Original Xbox games? No i didn't. Okay. But, i spent alot of money on my Xbox games, and i should still be able to play them, after spending more money for a new console. But, i can't complain, seeing how i just got my old Xbox back from my friend. I gave it to him, but he bought a 360, so he gave it back. And i guess i was being a bit too rash saying i'd trade in my 360 just for that reason. I'll probably never get rid of my 360.

I hope that MKAr will be compatible with 360... but if not, I still have a PS2

a new update on this. There's actually an article on Gamespot saying that Microsoft's marketing team (on the official Xbox Forums) just came out and said this really wasn't the case and they were going to continue making some games backwards compatible, including an upcoming batch of 12 games in the near future. No word on what those games are though.
