I say they at least have to have created the opening video sequence to the game, All the characters necessary, whomever they are, and everything else that comes along with them.
Someone care to elaborate?

If the information Ive been getting is true, then the game is all but finished.
Only bug testing and balancing remains.
Work began on this game at least two years ago.
Epic has worked very closely with midway on the unreal 3 engine.
The info I was given says MK8 does indeed feature characters from another gaME
JRRAKS
Remember the military render I mentioned his name is malcom dont know if he made it into the game though.

I'd hope after 2+ years of being in production that they'd be pretty far into the game. I see it that they've been waiting such a long time so they don't have to announce the game so early, show glitchy, bad looking footage and screenshots when the game is still in early development, and then end up delaying the game because it's not ready. They're taking their time and they aren't showing us until it's ready to be shown!
I expect the game to arrive in November but you never know...maybe we'll see a late summer release, but I doubt it.

They started in '06, so it will be 2 years in November...I guess?!

Whatever do you mean, this makes no sense. Who is JRRAKS?
If this is a crossover, than yes, that is the big surprise that boon was eluding to. The "Unbelievably unexpected thing."
/me heart skips a beat.

Oh man, we're STILL talking about the possibility of this being a cross over game? No way. I don't buy it. Never have. Not because I don't want it to be, but logically speaking, if they're trying to relaunch the series, why start out with a new storyline by borrowing characters from other games?
As for how far I think they're into it? Well, I imagine that all of the concept art is complete, all but maybe two or three characters are up and working in polygonal form, but I'd guess that only about seven or eight characters are completely finished with all of their moves, animations and final touches.
I'm guessing that at least half of the backgrounds are completely done. I'd also guess that most of tha major modes are completed. I would agree that the game probably still has to go through alot of testing/debugging.
My prediction?
1) Reveal at Midway's Gamer's Day (duh)
2) We'll see 7 characters
3) 3 of the character revealed will be returning characters that are drastically altered from before.
4) Scorpion and Sub Zero will be revealed first.
5) There will only be one picture of the 7th character with no info accompanying other than perhaps a name.
6) We'll see pictures of in game scenes and the teaser trailer hit the internet during the Gamers Day event.
7) We'll find a little bit about the story as far as themes, but no specifics yet.
8) No word on the villain in the first batch of info.
9) We'll see two or three brand new arenas. No arena remakes, yet.
10) The teaser trailer will end with the words "finish him" on the screen lol.
Yeah none of those are a huge stretch, but it's just a guess for poops and giggles and giggly poops.
8) Game Informer will have a blowout on MK in the issue that comes out after Gamers Day.
9)
That's my prediction anyways.

That could be a possibility. Dr. Malcolm Bryant was the person responsible for Kano's eye and Hsu Hao's cybernetic heart unit.

I've never heard of him. Where did that information come from?

I still think they have a loooooooooong ways to go. I'm not even sure if they have all the characters thought up yet. The only thing I'm just worried about is of course, the storyline. Which they need to make better, seeing how it went south after MK3.
But yet again, I don't work there, I'm only 17, what do I know?
CHEERS!
