How is Liu Kang returning?

I have been absent from this site for quite some time and when I returned I hear that Liu Kang is returning in this game as a spirit.

How did Liu Kang escape Shang Tsung if Quan Chi's Ending was prooved false? Is Shang Tsung dead? Is Liu Kang really returning as a spirit or are the developers using "Deception" on us?

I hope he's resurrected in the opening cinema and then killed again, with preferably having stryker die in the opening cinema as well.
