I hate to break your theory but they don't disappear when you open the chest, they disappear when you walk too close to the chest area and beyond.
I already opened the chest without them disappearing and then I ran closer to the edge and boom, they disappear.
Oh and Cyrax is not a SU as of now, so don't go saying he is one. Cause you have no proof what so ever to back it up.

i have started all over yesterday, and i did not open the chest. i even walked as close as possible and they did not disappear.
actually, im doing what nightbear had said. just to prove if he really is right or not. im almost done with konquest again and they are still there. so after i beat it, and am able to get to the other side, i will see if i can sneak up on them or something.
