i think DC is dark and gritty.

Actually, I think you got that backwards. MK has incredibly ineffective storytelling standards compared to DC, therefore rendering all of its would-be "darkness" null and void. MK isn't even taken seriously anymore by anyone over 15, so it's about as dark as Goosebumps(the book and TV series for the uninformed). Blood and gore that looks like red Play Do, yellow ninjas who seek revenge on anything and everything in sight and fat drunken bastards who puke and fart for special moves aren't exactly elements that one can take seriously.
@ Mick: I wouldn't mind seeing a "Stan Lee's Just Imagine" style retelling of the MK mythos by some of DC's best talent. Then some of these people could finally see the quality they've been missing out on all these years.

Id really to see that happen. What MK fan fail to realize is that just because something is ultraviolent, that make doesn't make it dark. MK presents violence in a laughable cartoony fashion which like you said render's its darkness null and void. A non MK related example of this is No More Heroes for Wii, not a dark game in the least bit, but it's ultra violent
Now if we could get a MK game with this level of darkness we would be in business :

While Arkham Asylum may not be apart the main DC canon, most of the graphic novels are apart of the main DCU canon. Do your homework chief.
Mortal Kombat could be dark, but never has been so far.
The realm of the netherrealm should be absolutely horrifying, the characters from hell should look like they just came from hell. The bosses should pose an actual intimidating presence, Shinnok should’ve been the worst threat yet, but he turned out looking like a fucking clown... that mimics.
Not to mention the rainbow ninjas are really ridiculous looking, especially those with no reason like Ermac, Rain, Reptile and Chameleon etc
In the story, the simple fact that death means nothing is pretty stupid. 3/4ths of the entire cast has died and come back completely unscratched. If it means some of my favorites have to die to get rid of the crap, then so be it.
*Don’t think I’m posting this because I hate MK, it’s actually one of my favorite franchises, but more often than not, I have to look at what it could be rather than what it is to enjoy it. Also, I’m not taking this as seriously as it looks, just gathering my thoughts.

regardless of how bloody it is, despite how awesomely dark the stories may be. as long as their wearing brightly colored skin-tight spandex it will NEVER be dark and gritty. End of story. visually, in spite of blood and shadows, spandex does NOT equal rugged.

Costumes are irrelevant. narrative tone is what matters.

I hope you've read Watchmen before you make that generalization.

DC is gritty, well atleast they have dark and griity characters, but for the most part they are recieved as softy at times
You play MK for grit? Ohohoho, this has to be the cosmic joke of the century.
On a sidenote, check on the finer contexts of DC. Yeah, fucked up. Do not expect grit from them, but they usually toss something out.
