As part of my degree, I study religions. We studied the pre-Islamic religions of the Middle East a few weeks ago.

Yeah the MK team seem to have taken some inspiration for characters by using things from the Middle eastern area.
Some examples are this, Ermac and Mileena's looks
They have an Arabic feel and look
They must have felt they didn't want this game to be just Asian and European in appearance.
I like it.
