Mixed Attack Weapon Combos in MKD

The weapon stances in MKDA gave us combos that consisted of either weapon hits, or in some weapon stances a few kicking attacks. Neither of these two things were mixed however. Although there was a small attempt by Kitana, but it seems the fans and feet connected together at the same time, or that it was just the fans that connected. Characters like Mileena pulled out their weapons mid combo and would combine weapon hits with kicks or punches back in the older games. Obviously back then the weapon mysteriously appeared and then disappeared, but now doing these combos again with the new engine would make these combos look somewhat authentic as the weapons would still be there.

Take Mileena as an example. I’m sure in a combo she could start with 2 or 3 Sai hits and then maybe spin one of the Sai in her hand and then use her fist to hit the opponent and then finish the combo with a high kick like she used to. Li Mei never used the Sai for combos at all in MKDA and it would be nice if the Sai were used by Mileena to their fullest potential in this way by mixing attacks. Mileena showed is she could do these things before, and I’m sure she could do them now.

Another example would be Scorpion. Using his Ninja sword he could finish some spinning combos with a roundhouse kick or maybe he could elbow the opponent in the face and stun them allowing him to continue with successive hits.

One final example is Kung Lao. He had a single handed weapon in the form of the Broadsword. I’d love to see some one–handed cartwheel kicks mixed in with the sword combos. Some combos could start with a punch, continue into a sword strike and some spinning attacks. In order to finish, he could switch the hand his weapon is in by putting into his other hand and continue a combo that way.

Weapon style combos in this way could be include some kicks or punches too and would look a lot more stylish.

Your thoughts?

I think your example with Mileena was the best. “The Sai spinning in her hand, would give her the opportunity to attack at the same time”.

I had never thought of this before. It is true that no character (with a few exceptions? Kitana??? I’m not sure) used any kick or hand attack while attacking with their weapons, and I think this should be applied.

It would be more realistic and fun, I can just imagine the use of the Katana like in the “Kill Bill movies”.

Great ideas once again T, this is indeed a very good observation, hopefully, MKD or/and Mk7 can explore this feature.

Kitana does a two hit combo in Steel Fan, but her feet are raised too whilst she attcaks and it looks like the feet connect too.

I'm glad you liked the examples. The Katana being used like in Kill bill would rock. Maybe we could see someone rip the other persons eye out too!

Hopefully some of the attack combos in MKD will feature this idea. If not, then MK7 should definitely have some. It'd look cooler and a lot more realistic as you said.

Actually, we DID HAVE this "Mixed Attack of Weapon Combos" in MKU and MKT!!!

Jade, Mileena, Kabal, Stryker, Kitana and Scorpion among others used their weapons and punch/kick attacks at the same time, if i am not mistaken. smile

Yes we did. I said that in my first post. Mileena was my example. I want these combos back. They disappeared after MKT and they should return.

I like the idea of taking the weapon styles and expanding them a lot to include more strikes in alternate grips. Kenshi whacking someone with the butt of his katana, Kabal hooking his hookswords together, etc. A lot of the weapons in MKDA are a lot more versatile in real life than they were in the game.

I agree that there should be more moves like that in the weapon styles. Just more choice, really. I love Kenshi's style, but it didn't have a whole lot of options. wink

that would make the gameplay feel more authentic as you said, if you watch and kung fu movie they mix up their hits with back hand strikes and kicks. this is a very well thought up idea.

this would work best with characters with light weapon, like sias, katanas, and what not.

what i want to see is a universe combo breaker with the weapons.

YES! This is how the weapon combos NEED to be. After all, realistically speaking, it's how it would be done. And Mileena was indeed a great example to use for this. Her weapons are probably ONE of the most versatile weapons in martial arts, to be authentic, this should be applied to her fighting. She should be constantly flipping and re-griping the sai for different combo attacks (utilizing both the butts and blades of the weapons) and weapon and limb catches (as would truly be done in the case of the Sai). The Sai, if used to it's fullest potential, is equally great in defense and offense. This fact should be present in the game, especially since they are "trying to make the martial arts as authentic as possible"

Like you said, it's not just Mileena, most of the weapons in the game should allow the fighters to add at least kicks to their weapon combos. The ideas mentioned for Kung lao are great examples. So I hope this ends up being the case Ty.

What you're talking about I agree with. To see Mileena flipping the Sai and re-gripping them as you said would look very cool in game.

You also mentioned that the Sai can be both offensive and defensive and I'd liked to see moves in game that can allow a player to do both hose things. They can choose when to go on the offense or defense with appropriate moves to choose from.

Those examples would be perfect and great to see in game. Kenshi should use the Katana single handedly too. It allow him to use his free arm to utilise other attacks.

Exactly! Hits are mixed up even when using weapons. They don’t just rely on constant weapon attacks. And yes, characters with lighter weapons would be better suited to this idea.

Well, I think that they are doing more with the weapons this time around...so we may see some improvements. After all, from the vid (Trailer 3), it looks like we get throws while in Weapon stance! ^_^ (refering to Dairou and Sindel fight) And I find this to be awesome...I just hope it's for everyone and not just Dairou, or a select few. So there's hope!

Weapon Throws would rule! Or just throws in the Weapon stance would be awesome! Hopefullt these will be introduced. It'd make the Weapon Stances a lot more fun.

I can see Jax hooking is Tonfas under the opponents arms and lifting them and then slamming them down!

Or maybe Kitana using the Fan Lift to throw the opponent instead of drawing them towards her.

It'd be really cool!

This Idea's great Ty. I missed the old combos like this. In MKDA to combine these together you had to cycle through the stances. Which was stilll no where close to the idea you have. It would be cool too if they did do weapon attacks then some kicks and punches. But what would really be cool is for mileena to spin her sais so that the handle stuck out between her knuckles and when she hit someone it hurt more lol. Just a idea. Great thread.

Mileena doing that would cause some serious injuries. It'd be a nice stabbing attack.

The style branchers only did weapon hits upon entering the style so again the mix of weapon and non weapon attacks would be gret to see.

Excellent ideas tgrant! The funny thing is that I was thinking about stuff like that sometime ago and now that you brought this up, yeah, this definitely needs to be implemented. I feel that there can be way more weapon combos and some should combine punches, kicks, etc...maybe even throws.

The funny thing is i was thinking about the same thing how the weapons just dissapear a few weeks ago but neevr implemented it into a thread. But that is great you should've put those ideas in my realism thread!!!

But that is great how everyone agrees that the weapons should be implemented alot more into this new engine. also if Mileena would like do a few kicks then stab you a few times wit the sais and take it away from there it would be awesome.

I was thinking maybe they could even let Mileena throw the sais in the air do some hits and catch them again and slice them then do a finishing kick or punch.

Thanks, man. Hopefully they will incorporate a mixture of kicking and punching attacks in with the weapon combos. Adding throws in there would be interesting and could help set up for more combo damage.

I love the idea of Mileena throwing her Sai into the air, then doing a combo and catching them again. I think that would be great to see in game!

Mileena kicking whilst attacking with the Sai was one of the things she used to do in the old games, so she should be able to do it now.

the fighting skills,moves,combos were awesome in mk:da and the combination attacks with all three fighting styls I liked them too a lot. I mean style branch combos
so it should stay so in mk d without any changes.

I agree that the branchers should stay as they are. They were fine. It's the combos within the Weapon stances themselves that need a mixture of punch and kicks in the actual combos along with weapon hits.
