MK:D Character Reviews
MK:D Character Reviews
I did this when MK:DA came out and I shall do this again...so far we have seen 12 characters in action, and it's my job to review these 12 and rate them thusly (in my own opinions.) Feel free to write your own!!!
SUB-ZERO
Hand-To-Hand: Shotokan, Dragons
Weapon: Kori Blade
Sub-Zero is a classic MK staple. Can anyone recall a classic MK game without at least ONE Sub-Zero in it? Fans would start frothing at the mouth and bombing Midway's offices if they found out he wasn't in it.
And if I do say so myself, fans shouldn't be disappointed. Sub-Zero has been given a fresh new look that separates him nicely from his ninja counterparts. He is now unique, especially since the game is now Frost-free...my only gripe is that he has the exact same styles as MKDA. Eew. Playing exactly the same would = bad.
But I must say that fatality we got to glimpse at E3 looks just plain nifty.
Overall Pre-Game Evaluation: 8/10
SCORPION
Hand-To-Hand: Hapkido, Moifah
Weapon: Ninja Sword
Scorpion is what defines Mortal Kombat, obviously being the immediate favorite of Boon as well as the ultimate fan-pleaser.
In my opinion he seems a little dry, since the vengeance gig is getting a little old, but considering his ending in MKDA I expect a pretty compelling storyline. He looks well, he looks very basic. Then again, Scorpion is classic, and you just cant improve on him, really. Adopting Moifah instead of Pi Gua should spice combat up while sticking to the same feel from MKDA and that teleport kick should prove very interesting in 3D.
And lets not forget that he learned a thing or two from Quan Chi it seems arm-rip fatality, anyone?
Overall Pre-Game Evaluation: 9/10
BARAKA
Hand-To-Hand: Silate, Hung Gar
Weapon: Blades
Baraka was always a very interesting and unique character, and I was pretty disappointed after his relative fall in popularity after MKII. A very abrasive mutant whos all blades and teeth cant be bad for the MK universe, right?
He seems to be the most publicized character in the game, and for good reason. He looks to die for I seriously cant get that nasty FMV image from that first trailer out of my head. Nasty! Im assuming he keeps his nifty blade moves for specials, which is a good thing. Ill go out on a limb, as well, and say that hes gonna have a major storyline role, considering that he and his wife were the first characters confirmed and the Deadly Alliance is nowhere in sight.
A fatality that completely decimates his opponent? Mmmmm toasty.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 8.5/10
MILEENA
Hand-To-Hand: Ying Yeung, Mian Chaun
Weapon: Sai
Mileena finally, the sais go back where they belong.
The second-most publicized character in the game and indisputably both the sexiest and the most frightening, Mileena has a very promising future. With a fresh, hey-look-Im-not-Kitanas-clone-anymore look that puts lots of nifty fabric where absolutely no one needs it (a classic staple for animated hotties), styles that will make her quick, fierce, and unforgiving, and the most grotesque fatality in quite a while, shes sure to shine. In the sense that big, long, pointy white teeth shine.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 9/10
ERMAC
Hand-To-Hand: Huachuan, Choy Lee Fut
Weapon: Axe
Last time he saw Ermac he was just a lowly ninja clone with crap for a story and only his unique telekinetic smashes that made him slightly distinguishable. Now he looks rather impressive, something of a tortured hell-demon whos actually reminiscent of Shang Tsung. Hes got styles Ive never heard of so I cant exactly comment on those, but his weapona big axemakes me wonder shouldnt Scorpion have that?
Of course, his telekinetic slams and tosses are back, comforting old Ermac fans but raising the question of who will win the battle of the TK warriors (Kenshi). Hes an old, musty character whom the boys at Midway decided to bring up and dust off, and theyve done marvelously with what they had, but overly-inspired, Ermac is not.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 7.5/10
SINDEL
Hand-To-Hand: Zha Chuan, Fu Jow Pai
Weapon: Kwan Do
Let me get it off my chest: I absolutely adore Sindel, above all other MK fighters, and I nearly wet my pants when I found she was returning.
That said
She looks like she has before, but as with gems like Scorpion, thats enough. Following Midways pattern of breathing life into old characters, she has been brought back from the depths of MK3, with her classic dead-looking complexion, purple bodice-like costume, and lethal coif. Shes always had a rich storyline I thought was dreadfully untapped, and you just cant beat the originality and creepiness of that damn flying and screaming.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 9/10 (Im biased, sue me)
HOTARU
Hand-to-Hand: Pi Gua, Gojuryu
Weapon: Naginata
Hotaru. He seems to be of a strange breed hes a samurai. An EVIL samurai, no less. Doubtlessly this was what came of the MKDA concept Dairou is it me, or does Hotaru seem pretty dull? Hes got a vaguely interesting weapon, otherwise, he doesnt thrill me. Obviously the storyline wont be anywhere near based on him, and all hes got that make him stand out is basic fireball attacks. He seems to be rather a filler character of course, my taste is my taste.
Smashy fatality? THATs never been done before.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 5/10
ASHRAH
Hand-to-Hand: Choujaio, Bagua
Weaon: Kriss
Ashrah...a mysterious, white-clad demon huntress. Well, first off she gets points for being the first female in MK history not to show ANY skin whatsoever, which is refreshing. She reminds me a little of a nun. Well...a KICKASS nun, but a nun all the same.
There seems as though there's quite a bit one could do with this character to make her very interesting, but then again Midway has a history of spoiling great ideas. Time will tell.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 7/10
NIGHTWOLF
Hand-to-Hand: Val Tudo, Tae Kwan Do
Weapon: Tomahawks
While he wasn't exactly the hugest fan favorite ever to come out of MK3, I though he was original (at least...snicker.) Ok s fine, I was waiting for the other two sexually ambiguous gentlement to come out so that he and Stryker could finish their homage to The Village People.
Joking aside, they seem to have improved on him. Greatly. No more is the homoerotic Indian-painted white man of MK3. He seems more fleshed out and much more believable...though his basic face-stab with the tomahawk is a tad uninspired.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 7.5/10
LI MEI
Hand-to-Hand: Baji Quan, Lui He Ba Fa
Weapon: Melon (wtf?)
After Drahmin, Li Mei was my least favorite character to come out of MKDA, and truth be told I was a little heartbroken when they decided to bring her back and not someone absolutely kickass like Jade or Reptile.
She seems...well, still kind of crappy. She has the new samurai-chick thing going for her, indicating that she might have an actually interesting storyline this game, but they even screwed up the outfit (explain to me HOW a pale pink samurai outfit is believable?)
She still has the same sucky fighting styles, and a very dumb looking weapon (melon? Okay, she's fighting with steel maracas...) We can only hope that Midway makes improvements on absolutely EVERYTHING she was.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 5/10
BO' RAI CHO
Hand-to-Hand: Drunken Fist, Mi Zong
Weapon: Jojutsu
It appears as though everyone's favorite fighting drunkard is back. Yeah.
Contrary to popular opinion, I thought that Bo' Rai Cho was at least a cute member of the MKDA cast, it not at least actually a good one. He fought well, and he provided severely lacking comedic relief.
And here he is back...the exact same way.
He has the exact same styles, and the exact same look...I'm sorry, Bo' looks a tad too dry where there could have been loads of development.
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 6.5/10
KENSHI
Hand-to-Hand: Tai Chi, Judo
Weapon: Kitana
Well, here we have a blind man who kicks ass with a sword. I like Kenshi quite a bit in MKDA; he was classy, he was fresh, and he could fight like a beast. He had neat telekinetic moves and a great fatality.
It'll feel weird using Judo with him, because it seems to fit its previous possessor, Jax, a little better, but Kenshi seems to have his same great flair in MK:D.
My only gripe...does he look EXACTLY the same to anyone else, too?
Overall Pre-Game Rating: 8/10

Nice thread, but imo. I like everything about Subzero except his hand to hand fighting styles; Dragon and Shotokan. His koriblade was pretty good. I just wish thet improve his fighting styles and fix or implement better branch combos.
Scorpion Hapkido was fast and very useful to perform a decent combo. Glad to have it back. I hope the make his spear useful to be perform during a pop up combo.
About kenshi, I only used his Katana and Tai Chi fighting styles so I'll be ok with him. I made lot's of long combos with him without changing styles.

Nice work looks good, despite your obvious distaste for Hotaru, I really like him, the idea of a samurai got me interested straight away, cool looking armour and has the one of the more useful styles from DA, and, he's evil.
Good ninjas, evil samurai, the world of MK is a strange and twisted one

I agree with most of what you said, you_suck, although here's what I'd add:
Sindel: I wasn't psyched that she was coming back, and I've yet to see something new from her. Her Kwan Do doesn't suit her, IMO, and I think her MK3 scream fatality was better than her new one - again, IMO. 5.5/10
Nightwolf: He's one of my returning favorites. He's got a new lightning move and I like how his arrows stick in his opponent's chest. His fatality has a lot of flair, too. 8.5/10
Hotaru: I seen endless cheese potential in chaining his Lava Burst with his Grasshopper Kick. But again, his Naginata seems misplaced (should've gone to Li Mei!!) and his fatality, though well executed, is somewhat unimaginative. 6.5/10
Li Mei: Looks-wise, she has probably gotten the biggest makeover, which should please a lot of people that disliked her pink bikini in MKDA. Personally I don't think her styles suck - Liu He Ba Fa is one of the most effective in the game, IMO; Baji Quan just needs a few more strings and it would be good as well. Her existing specials are very good as wel. The only drawback I can see is her WEAPON!! A MELON?!? Ugh. Otherwise Li Mei is above-average. 7/10

Very nice thread. I think its not that bad that Sub-Zero has kept his styles. Dragon is a good and affective style and Im sure they will improve the Shotokan with some combos and stuff. At least that is what they are saying. This way there is still some new stuff to learn for Sub-Zero fans and they dont have to start all over again. I think once a character has two styles which will fit him they have to stick with them and improve them where necessary.
About Li Mei. I dont like her pink armor outfit that much either but at least they are making her more unique. She will have hey own weapon now which is great. I already liked her in MKDA but she surely deserves a second chance.

But the stage weapon in that level is that giant sword, unless some of the areanas have two different weapons.

Good thread.
I'll throw in my own analysis.
Subzero
Analysis: The only thing that still stays true to his old look is the scar and the color scheme. But everything from the chainmail to the dragon design on his pants, he looks excellent. I don't think it's fair to compare him to shredder, since TMNT didn't compyright the samarai helmet, but that's my opinion. Subzero is the heart and soul of MK. No matter what people say, Subzero has covered more ground, more story, and more games than Scorpion. He is MK to me, and therefore he should look that part.
Scorpion
Analysis: It's no secret that Scorpion is becoming stagnant. Most people have been keeping their fingers crossed for a huge renewal of Scorp, and at least appearance wise, that's what we have gotten. The golden armor and face frame are a nice touch, and he appears to have lost the aura of hatred. I don't know, for reason I think we're dealing with a nicer Scorp this time around. If his story has changed as much as his appearance, then I'll take back everything I've said about him.
Baraka:
Analysis: Never have liked Baraka. He's been boring to me since day one, and his character design was shit until MKD. I will admit, he does look great this time around. But since I already have an idea of what his story is, I cant't say I'm impressed. I would have rather had someone else back, but I'll give him one more chance.
Mileena
Analysis: Another example of a good character design, but horrible story. Mileena is the most empty character in the early generation of MK. The most significant thing she's ever done was be jealous of Kitana and dying. That's her whole resume right there. She looks hella sexy, and I think she's the only character who actually fits in with the sex appeal look. But I'll give her a chance(a brief one).
Li Mei
Analysis: I never understood how people could say she was a rip of the above^^^ character. I mean, she had two original styles, and took up the sais because Mileena wasn't using them. Her story had worlds more of potential than Li Mei. Wait... that's right. Li Mei actually HAD a story. She was fighting for her people in shackles, while being forced to do the bidding of the DA against her will. That's a lot better than a pissed-off clone. Anyway, I was awesome with her in MKDA. I'm glad to see she back in both sexy and reserved attire.
Ermac:
Analysis: I knew from the moment he was mentioned in Konquest that'd with see this guy again. There wasn't a doubt in my mind. He is by far the best looking character, IMO. Storywise, he's got a lot going for him as well, with Kenshi in the mix. If they make an alliance, it will be something worth seeing.
Noob Saibot
Analysis: When I first heard Noob was coming back, I was like "shit, again?" But now that I've seen him(in pics that do him justice), I'm blown away. He looks like what a stealth ninja should be in one costume, and in the other he's a perfect representation of a ninja of darkness. I love him. I'll leave it at that.
Smoke
Analysis: It's obvious that Smoke is going to be what Reptile was for MKDA. Many will embrace change, welcome his look and enjoy his beauty and originality. Unfortunately, a larger fraction will condemn him for not being a MK3 cyborg or an MK2 ninja. The team truly took a risk in making him what he is, and I think it's an excellent idea. But some people are too narrowminded to see beyond the past. I would hate for him to be knocked out for MK7 because too many fans were closeminded to change.
I'll make more later if I can, but for the most part I agree with what You_Suck said for the others.

Great Post You_Suck!!! Altough in some I do Disagree, nonetheless, these are all YOUR opinions and Im gonna give you props for this good deep post

I agree with pretty much everything you_suck said.
However, Temp, I'm gonna have to disagree with what you say about Mileena. Granted, her storyline has rarely gone deeper than trying to kill Kitana, but she is anything but an empty character. Quite the opposite in fact. In my honest opinion, Mileena is hands down the deepest and most complex character in Mortal Kombat and still has plenty of potential. As a good or evil character.

I won't rag on anybody for liking Mileena, but she hasn't won any trophies with me(other than appearance). She has lethal skill and burning hatred, and what does she do with it? She gets killed. And before that, she didn't do anything significant. Hot wet sex with baraka doesn't count.
And the thing that annoys me is that she's been revived so many times when other characters deserved their toll. She returned in UMK3, and did nothing. She returned in MKG, and got killed. Unless her ending wasn't canon, and in that case, she did nothing. And if my sources are correct(They haven't been wrong yet), she still isn't doing anything important. Oh well, at least she has a role this time, beyond hating Kitana.
Li Mei's story is not only original, but evolving. She's a warrior of morality, who is being forced to serve someone elses purpose. With the deadly alliance out of commission, she'll be brought into different light. Scorpion and Mileena just don't know how to move forward.
Now if you guys like Mileena, that's cool. I lean the other way. Being a writer, I weigh story a lot heavier than others. And don't get me wrong, I do think she has an excellent design. Yet many characters have excellent character designs, and without a deep story, she just can't compete for me.

I see what your saying and I agree. I think storyline and character development is very important, so I'm not bashing your opinion, I'm just saying that although Mileena hasn't had much impact on the overall story she is still a fully developed and complex charcater. A character can be deep, complex and fully developed and not have a good story, like Mileena or Sonya. And at the same time a character can have a good story but be kind of one dimensional and underdeveloped, like Sub-Zero or Raiden.
I've taken plenty of writing classes on character developement. Based on what I know from those classes I say the most developed, deep and complex characters in order are:
1) Mileena
2) Kitana
3) Sonya Blade
4) Scorpion
5) Kung Lao
The problem with Mileena and Scorpion is that they're not being used to their full potential.
I agree, Li Mei has plenty of potential. But that's only because she's had no real developement so far. Kai and Stryker have potential, too.
In Deception it looks like Li Mei's story will take an interesting turn so hopefully she'll evolve and develope because in MK:DA she was a paper thin character and her story was very weak.

Great reviews! They've made me look forward to MKD even more! I agree with all of them and sindel is great! She looks amazing as does Ermac! I'll probably do my own reviews after MKD is released.

LMAO to the guy that said Mileena and Scorpion have decent/good stories. Good stories are few and far between in MK, as most of the stories suck horribly.
The only real exception I can think of is Sub-Zero, who has consistenly had a decent and ever evolving story in every game. Hey, you know I'm not lying--I'm not even a big Sub-Zero fan.

| TemperaryUserName Wrote: Good thread. I'll throw in my own analysis. Subzero Analysis: The only thing that still stays true to his old look is the scar and the color scheme. Scorpion Analysis: It's no secret that Scorpion is becoming stagnant. Baraka: Analysis: Never have liked Baraka. He's been boring to me since day one, and his character design was shit until MKD. I will admit, he does look great this time around. But since I already have an idea of what his story is, I cant't say I'm impressed. I would have rather had someone else back, but I'll give him one more chance. Mileena Analysis: Another example of a good character design, but horrible story. Li Mei Analysis: I never understood how people could say she was a rip of the above^^^ character. Ermac: Analysis: I knew from the moment he was mentioned in Konquest that'd with see this guy again. There wasn't a doubt in my mind. He is by far the best looking character, IMO. Storywise, he's got a lot going for him as well, with Kenshi in the mix. If they make an alliance, it will be something worth seeing. Noob Saibot Analysis: When I first heard Noob was coming back, I was like "shit, again?" But now that I've seen him(in pics that do him justice), I'm blown away. He looks like what a stealth ninja should be in one costume, and in the other he's a perfect representation of a ninja of darkness. I love him. I'll leave it at that. Smoke Analysis: It's obvious that Smoke is going to be what Reptile was for MKDA. I'll make more later if I can, but for the most part I agree with what You_Suck said for the others. |
well, the first four reviews imo, are wrong, but they're just your opinion, and I respect them, good job, and I agree 100% with you on noob saibot, he's one of my brand new faves
