Sure, there were things about it that were silly, but, overall, I think it was a great concept and very fun.

The end. Feel free to tell me your thoughts on MK4 overall

Perhaps the primary reason why people are complaining is because of its graphics. Then again, the game was made freakin' decade and a half ago, the graphics weren't perfect but for the circumstances, they were as good as you could get.

Then, there are the grapples, also very hated, though I think of them as a nice addition, with a possible exception of those of Jarek and Jax, they were really dumb.

Then, there is the lack of personal combos, which indeed is stupid. After watching several vids on youtube, I saw long combos actually could be performed, but till then I played the game long enough not to get interested in learning them, as I've beaten the Master II ladder for like hundreds of times without combos, anyway.

Cutscenes are so and so, I find the scenarios somewhat tolerable, but the scripts are as annoying as they come (e.g. Scorpion standing for 5 seconds, and then starting, as if giving a lecture:"By defeating you, Sub Zero..."... I mean, totally unrealistic).

Shinnok is undisputedly the easiest MK boss ever, which is at the same time good, because, it spared us the troubles we had with Kintaro, Motaro and Kahn, and bad because, well, it gave away how much he sucked as a boss. Also, both the non-scary looks (especially for a creature of his caliber) and the lack of personal special moves made him totally forgettable.

Some complain Quan Chi looks ridiculous confused

I overall enjoyed it and have been playing it till now. One of my favorites.

True, the grabs were a bit silly. Shinnok was an easy boss, a REALLY easy boss.

Reiko's face was the exact same as Johnny Cage's. The cutscenes were FUNNY AS HELL xD although Gold did a much better job.

But,still, MK4 had Fujin and Kai, who I think were very cool :D

MK Gold hatred: ditto.

To me it was a fun game for only so long... what made the game last as long as it did was the ability to modify textures using MK4 Strip by Sorcerersoft. That and the fact that we were all waiting so long for MK5, fans had to find SOMETHING to keep us busy and sane.

Just look at what fans did... just simple changes like that brought the game back to life.

Several things killed MK4 for me.

The graphics even then IMO were subpar. Granted, at the time I didn't think about it since I was a wee bit younger, but in hindsight, there was just something off about them.

I personally didn't like what they did to Reptile, and I absolutely hated the Kombat. I hated how awkward it was to move in and out of the 3D plane, and I hated how awkward it was to draw a weapon. I also though that the AI was a little bit cheaper then other MKs had been. There was something about how Reiko could block every move I did, and throw me around like a rag doll that pissed me off.

"MK4" is probably one of my favourite "MK" games, haha! Though I do admit it may be largely due to the fact that it was my first "MK" game (that I owned) and I also believe it was my first Playstation game, so there's a large nostalgia factor there.

But still, I really liked the storyline of the game. Sure, Shinnok wasn't really anything special, but Quan Chi always intrigued me. In regards to the plot, I like how... isolated (?) everything felt. I mean, after "MK Trilogy" being so cluttered with characters and the huge world domination plot, there was something so empty about "MK4." Like, you really got the sense the kombatants were alone a lot of the time. I dunno... I don't think I'm explaining it very well.

I also really, really loved the character designs. I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion but I stand by it. Sonya, for instance, has yet to look better than she does in that game. I like Scorpion's re-jigged look, with the purple instead of black, and of all the monstrous Reptile designs there have been, I think his "MK4" appearance is the best. Plus, although the in game graphics are fairly standard for the time, I always thought the FMV models were quite lifelike, mostly their faces. Like, more realistic than they do now, all these years (and graphics advancements) later.

I liked those bone breaker moves you could do when you're really close to your opponent. And the stage fatalities (the one with the fan, especially).

And the intro movie is so cool. Definitely up there with the infamous "MK II" commercial.

No one has mentioned the arcade version. The arcade version's graphics are so much smoother and detailed than in any other version.

I didn't like MK4 when it first came out, but only because of how used to MK1-UMK3 I was. I didn't want anything but 2d with digitized actors, and some of the new characters didn't appeal to me. It's funny though because as time went on, the game grew on me. It was fast and fun, the story was fun, had a dark overtone to it, and the stages are really cool too. My favorite being the one I think is called wind world. The arena that looks like it's on a mountain top with a violent rain storm going on. Some of the MK4 crew grew on me too, and today I like Tanya and Reiko who debut in MK4. So Mortal Kombat 4 started off slow with me, but to this very day I like it.

I like MK 4 a lot. I loved that it was a "back to the basics" release after things had gotten out of hand in MK3/UMK3/Trilogy.

I liked the fact that it ditched the sillier finishes (Friendships, Babalities, Anamilities, and Brutalities) and had more violent Fatalities (especially after MK3-Trilogy had a lot of lame and cartoony ones like Kabal scaring the other player or Jax turning into a giant and stepping on you). It was a throwback to MK1's feeling. MK4 had some of the best Fataliest when it was released.

The gameplay felt a lot like MK3's just with weapons, items to throw, and the 3D plane.

The story was enjoyable too, especially after learning more about Shibboleth and Quantity Chi's backgrounds. Some of the new characters sucked but you can't win them all.

MK4's biggest problem is that it needed a better home release. MK Gold should have been ported over to PS2 with fixes. The Dteamcast just kind of obscured it a bit and the N64 and PS1 versions of MK4 weren't all that impressive.

I LOVED/LOVE MK4.

What I wish is that they release MK4 in an arcade perfect to Xbox or PS3... the graphics are AMAZING compared to N64 or PS1. Dreamcast was glitchy as can be and was bad. Examples of the arcade being amazing compared to the other home port versions:

. Whenever an explosion happens, the screen shakes.

. Graphics are crisp and perfect.

. Shadows are not blocky.

. When Liu Kang throws the opponent down from being a dragon, when he/she hits the blood puddle, the blood comes up and lands down.

. When you perform a fatality in Wind World, it continues to rain and doesn't stop.

. Certain screams and voices are still intact.

. Whenever you sidesweep, making the camera turn, it does not go behind the wall, showing black space.

That's what I've noticed. I've been wanting the arcade perfect version of MK4 since Midway Arcade Treasures came out.

I hated the gameplay the most. Universal string combos made characters seem like their individuality was, once again, only defined by their special moves. At least the MK3 series individualized chain combos.

The 3D movement was absolute crap, and was only really useful for dodging projectiles (assuming you got the timing right).

That, and any match that had ground objects became a "pick up rock, throw, pick it up again, throw, pick it up again, throw...repeat" match.

The Whole "MAXIMUM DAMAGE" was not only a cop out, but was able to be abused. I believe it triggered when you hit about 40% damage, but the abuse was the fact you could do a combo that hit around 38-39% damage, then do a "MAXIMUM DAMAGE"-triggering move, but it would still count as full damage, so you'd save the most devastating move for last. It would knock you back, but you'd get the full amount on the combo percentage.

Don't EVEN get me started on MK Gold. The so-called "improvements/additions" COMPLETELY wrecked an already-flawed game.

MK4 is the first game I played so it's pretty obvious that I do not hate it. The only thing that bugged me was that Shinnok was way too easy to defeat, even Goro too. Comparable to the first 3 MK games, the final 2 bosses in MK4 were a piece of cake. This is the only thing I do not like really. Most people don't like the graphics but to be honest they do not bother me that much. After all it is a game made before 2000.

Overall I like it!

Yes. MK4 Arcade needs to be released... but what would surpass that is an Arcade Perfect version of MK Gold with multiplayer support AND home version cheat codes.

I think realistically, the reason MK4 gets a lot of flak because it was the most unpolished MK game in series next to MK vs DC. Still good enough though.

I wish there was a perfect revision of MK Gold up on XBLA or Steam. Instead I have to play the glitchy Dreamcast version. Stupid NRS.

Mortal Kombat 4 is my most favorite Mortal Kombat yet (with the exception of MK9, I have yet to play it) Not only was it the first MK game that I played, it was the first M rated game I played, so it was a HUGE leap for my childhood. I find the gameplay to be the best overall. IT was faster and more intense. I also thought it had good graphics, but yet again graphics normally don't bring me to hate a game unless it interferes with gameplay. The music is awesome, and it fits the mood of what ever stage you're on perfectly. I've yet to find a fighting game that de-throne's it as my favorite, but there still is MK9, seeing as I've yet to play it.

To be honest,
I was okay with the Graphics. Given the circumstances off the Game Systems and the knowledge game designers possessed.

But I do agree, the Graphics were amazing for the Arcade Version were amazing.
What I really think they SHOULD do is make the Arcade Version (with it's... awesome crisp graphics) available for X360, PS3 store. Got to admit... it would be pretty cool. Maybe even just do it for the MK:G version...

I do have one thing to argue about.
I hated the combo system. I absolutely HATED what you were limited to.
But I guess that's where Special moves come in. It helps with making Combo's more... extensive.

I've always wanted to buy the Arcade Version of the game... =]
