My list of gripes.
Can't have an MK game without flawed fighting, so here's what I've found thus far.
- when attempting to dash in and do a regular attack, the CPU will still think you're tapping f,f unless you completely stop, and even then, it doesn't always work. I made the mistake of trying to dash in with characters like Liu Kang, and when I try to uppercut, his flying kick comes out. It's VERY crippling for dash-in juggles or quick surprise attacks since the moves get confused.
- Green lantern also has a weird issue with his d,b 2 attack. It comes out many times if you just dash in and duck with 2, even if you delay the button press. It pretty much leaves GL WIDE open, since that attack only hits characters who are distanced.
- Aside from the "Test Your Might" the mini-games suck. They take away all forms of skill and turn it into a guessing game. Nothing like being 2 hits away from victory, only to be outdone by someone because I'm not a mind reader...it's all luck-based. Freefall is also busted since you can get a lucky hit or 2, then just stop, and the opponent can't do anything to counter unless you're attacking, so they fall and take the damage with no other possibility of countering.
Many of the more complicated pro-moves are completely useless, like Deathstroke's and Superman's. They require an AMAZING level of timing and leave a very little window to perform. The slight increase in damage isn't worth the effort at all for many of these.
- The breaker system, while fixed up a bit from the previous games, is still broken. It would've been better as something like an alpha counter or a parry, where it only works on incoming initial attacks. It also has a knack of only working when it wants to. Countless times, I've had a full rage bar, only to be jamming on the breaker command while on the receiving end of a long combo.
- The AI loves to somehow break the rules of Mortal Kombat. Not only does it start off with half a rage bar already, it can, on random occasions, not only initiate rage mode from the start of round 1, but can also do breakers while in rage mode. I don't get it.
It's also fun to get decimated by AI opponents who use Freefall and Klose Kombat, since there's no way of telling if they're reading your input or not. From the way the AI behaves during regular combat, it wouldn't surprise me at all (remember the "dancing" AI from UMK3?).
The game is still immensely fun, but these problems were pretty noticeable to me.

isn't it possible to counter the initial attempt at a throw/klose combat though?

Dude, whoever gets first hit in a match gains half a Rage meter. That is how your opponents are getting Rage so fast, they're not starting the match with it.

i still think the game is good

Yeah, the standard MK problems... All MK games are pretty sloppily designed and put together compared to pretty much any other fighting game. You can just tell by glossing over the game for a few minutes if you have experience with other fighters.
They do keep getting better though.
One thing that ticks me off are fireballs.
I don't like how a winning strategy can be heavy on spamming fireballs or other over powered moves like earth quakes. That's for the computer mainly.
I beat the computer on very hard easily if I spam projectiles and use melee attacks when they get close. Engage Rage mode, rush in for a big combo then back off and throw fireballs again till they get close.
Makes me wish the special moves required a meter like super moves, so you can't abuse them.

Uh...no.
They're starting with it in single player. It's odd, since it doesn't always happen.

This never happened to me.

My biggest gripe is when I play AI or people online. Somehow, they always manage to get off combos when we're standing face to face right in front of each other before I do. It seems like the faster I hit my buttons the more hits they get on me. Somehow their punches always hit me before I hit them. It stupefies me. Even when I block and go on the attack when they are left vulnerable they almost always get to me first. It happens to just about every character I play with.

dark kahn is supposed to have all kinds of rage and breaker advantages. he is a boss character, he can cheat like that. his rage fills up twice as fast and i believe he always starts out with one bar of rage. it was done that way to increase the level of difficulty against the player. i've noticed it too. also, don't confuse his breaker with his rage mode, because his breaker looks exactly like he is going into rage mode. i've been confused many times into believing that he went into rage mode, but really, all he did was a breaker
and to the guy above me, about the online matches, you probably just have a bad connection. when i play people who have 2 bars, it sometimes seems that their hits come way after the impact, so it seems that they are punching the air, then all of a sudden i take damage and stumble back as if a ghost had punched me.

I wish it were that. My connection bar is all the way full so lag isn't the issue. It also happens when playing AI (the computer). The faster I hit buttons.....the less I hit the opponent and the more they hit me. I guess the AI picks up on how fast you hit buttons?

Getting the first hit gives fills your Rage to the half mark.

you might have a glitchy game then, cuz i haven't ever had a problem with the AI getting ghost hits or anything. if you're button mashing, that might be the prob, but if not, i'd say your game is busted. i had to take mine back twice. once because it would freeze mid gameplay, and the second time because the story mode cinematics would always pause and skip
as for dark kahn, i've seen him do breakers in rage mode too. all i can say is that is how they wanted him to be. relentless and downright scary

Yes, this insta-rage thing is definitely NOT normal.

I already clarified that he sometimes has the half-bar right as round 1 starts, before any hit is made.
A few other things really bug me.
During freefall kombat, you HAVE to be the winner of the mini-game to do ANY damage, which is weird. You can deal out 5 of 6 blows, but if the opponent swaps at the last minute, you get no damage for any of them. Also, it seems to max out at 30%. You can do 4 hits followed by the super, and it does the same as squeezing in 6 hits + the super. It makes no sense. More hits = more risk, which should = more damage.
Also, test your might *kinda* suffers from the same problem. You can be ramming your opponent through wall after wall, but if they hit the buttons fast enough, they can literally take ZERO damage...wtf? From a gameplay standpoint, this actually kinda makes sense, but aesthetically, it doesn't.
