Hi, I just posted a thread about how I guessed the big NOOB secret, I must admit that having seen one or two spoilers of the MKD plot, I've been thinking about how everything links and I have a 'worked out' backstory that I just can't seem to get out of my head! This post may be long, and alot of it is purely conjecture (made up to tie everything together), but it would be interesting to look back on this story in the future to see how much I guessed right. Here goes...
--
In the beginning there existed gods. Eventually the gods created Reality, however Reality became sentient and would not bend to the gods will. In an effort to regain control, the gods shattered Reality (from then on known as the One Being) into six pieces using a specially created artifact known as the Kamedogu.
When the destruction settled, each piece only contained a fraction of the power of the One Being but was still conscious. The gods saw fit and were finally able to transform each piece into the Realms we know of in MK. The Kamidogu shattered and the pieces scattered across the Realms.
In the Realm of Outworld, a civilisation began to develop. Eventually, war broke out between the Dragons and the Humanoids. Many lives were lost, and eventually the leader of the Dragons (Onaga, the Dragon King) finally succeeded in defeating the Humanoids and became the outright ruler of Outworld. Humanoids were given the choice of either serving Onaga or execution.
Onaga was a mysteriously powerful and evil ruler, the secret of his powers was unknown at that time - but in fact he was being manipulated by a being even more powerful - the Outworld consciousness of the One Being chose only the most powerful as his emmissary to manipulate in an effort to regain his former power by making himself whole again.
Many realms fell to Onaga and his Humaniod soldiers. His ambition was unrelenting, and in efforts to create even stronger soldiers, a plan was put into action to combine the Humanoids with the powers of the Dragons - the Shokan - named after the humanoid who concieved the plan, Shao Kahn. Onaga loved the idea, and the first few Shokan were born. Goro was the first of many. With the experiment a success, Kahn was hastily promoted to Advisor of Onaga.
However, Kahn had more cunning than he let on. Periodically, Onaga would drink the blood of his own Dragon people in efforts to keep himself young and powerful. This caused a hatred to develop between Onaga and his would-be allies. On one of these occasions, Shao Kahn slipped poison into Onaga's challice, an defiant act of revenge on Onaga for enslaving his people. The poison acted quickly, soon Onaga was dead.
Shao Kahn was elected the new leader of the Humanoids and promised to rebuild Outworld and end the era of Onaga, the time of evil, and usher in a new age of peace. All remaining Great Dragons were killed, and the Shokan warriors pledged allegience to Kahn.
Meanwhile, the Outworld Essence had lost it's emmissary. In efforts to salvage it's plan, the Spirit of Onaga was cast into the shell of the last Great Dragon egg, one day he would return. The loyal members of his Undefeatable Army sacrificed themselves in hopes that one day they could once again fight for the Dragon King, and and elemental called Blaze was cursed to protect the Dragon Egg until it hatched...
A few years after his victory, Shao Kahn (now wearing the skull and spines of Onaga to symbolise freedom) became the second emmissary of The Outworld Essence. The One Being needed a backup plan in case Onaga would never revive, and Shao Kahn was the strongest and most influential being of the time. Slowly but surely, Kahn transformed. Eventually, the 'old', good, peaceful leader became power hungry and evil himself, the very essence that once was Onaga.
Due to the One Being's influence, Kahn became much taller, stronger and powerful than any other Humanoid. It was believed that his strength and power were the 'Power of Onaga', and the Dragon King's skull was believed to contain this power. Since then, many have sought the helmet of Kahn for the power believed to be contained.
Slaying his own people (the Humanoids), his Shokan armies quickly spread across the Realm of Outworld. Destroying his own holy temple in an act of sacrelege, Kahn relocated to the Black Tower, built upon the bones of his enemies. He was no longer the leader of the Humanoids, he became Emporer of Outworld... but it wouldn't stop there!
Kahn needed MORE power. He needed to rule MORE Realms. After learning how to open portals to other realms, he merged the Realm of Edenia with outworld. The Outworld Essence thus became stronger since now two parts of itself were merged together... it needed more!
The Gods saw what was going on, and knew that simply killing Kahn would not save the other Realms (since the One Being would simply find a new host), A tournament was introduced (which we all know now as Mortal Kombat), designed to prevent Shao Kahn (or any other host for the One Being) from being able to enter the Realm of Earth.
In answer to Kahn being the Appointed One of the One Being (although not consciously aware of the fact), the Elder Gods voiced their reply - making the original Kung Lao their 'Chosen One'.
The rest is history.

I'm wondering if the part about Shao Kahn originally being a good guy that was tained by the Skull of Onaga means he 'could' become a good guy in a future MK title! I believe Onaga (and in essence The One Being) has been totally defeated in MKD - so therefore would no longer be able to manipulate Kahn. Come on, we've seen shock transformations like this loads of times in MK! It would also allow him to be weaker than usual, more in line with the rest of the MK cast.
Anyway, this is just a bit of fun, hope you've enjoyed it!
Peace!

I dunno my gatherings from MKD were that Kahn was always evil and sadistic. Also him wearing Onaga's skull on his head might not be accurate because ****************SPOILER*******************in sindel's ending they find what would be Onaga's body of Reptile wasn't in the wrong place at the wrong time. It came to life when the soul moved to the body, and if he didn't his head was missing I don't think they would have ever planned on resurecting him. ***************END SPOILER***************** good work tho

To be blunt I'd never seen Sindel's ending. Strangely though, after reading the screen caps my theory could still hold out.
It's explained in the ending that Onaga wasn't inhabiting his intended body, and that his armour was missing - who has it? I'd bet anything Kahn has it. As for his head not being missing, Onaga's original body is capable of repairing itself to some degree. Sindel held her weapon in the chest of the corpse to prevent Onaga's heart growing back, perhaps his head already grew back???
Peace!
