In MKII it was a ? box, which if you had done the right thing in the prior match would allow you to fight Jade, and if not, then it was skipped. In MKT it was an E box, which was an indurance round in which you fought 2 characters...just to clear things up.

Anyway i get the drift of your post, and i have to say, i would hate that. It'd get mighty stale having to fight the same characters every time, as there is only one "team" in the game.
It wouldn't even really be an endurance round as such, because (i'm assuming) both characters share the same lifebar, which takes away the difficulty of having to win 4 rounds.

Also, this has probably been brought up again already, but i don't read through this forum much, and since i'm sorta posting about this topic, i'll throw it out there. Remember when people were convinced they saw a "brother of the shadows" logo (or whatever that cult is that Noob belongs to is called) on Smokes boot? Perhaps there was some truth in that.
