All Three reside in the Netherealm. The difference between demon and spectre is obvious. A demon, like Noob Saibot, has been in the Netherealm for all eternity. They are immortal beings and were created in the Netherealm, and will stay there forever.

Spectres on the other hand, were once Mortals in another realm. Scorpion would be a key example of a Spectre. He has been sent back in a ghastly form, to finish some mission. Wouldn't Mileena be a spectre as well, having been murdered and brought back by Shinnok or Shao Kahn?

Also, I am not seeing the difference between Oni and a Spectre, nor an oni or a demon. Drahmin was once a human being, like Scorpion. However, Drahmin was sentenced to the Netherealm 500 years ago, where as Scorpion died and wound up there about a decade ago.

So what's the difference between an Oni and a Spectre?

A spectre (Scorpion) is a body who's been ressurected by it's own soul.

An Oni is a demon who's been sent to the Netherealm or has been there since the begining of the Netherealm's existance. A demon who inflicts pain and torment to corrupted souls for pure pleasure.

EDIT: On the other hand, once the spectre's mission is completed, it will be sent to the Netherealm again anyway, and will eventually become an Oni or another demon.

So what's the difference between Noob and Moloch, other than one is a 10 foot tall hunch back?

Seems tough to define them apart. I'll just say, at least our favorite spectre isn't running around in a loin cloth and flies around him.

That sucks for Scorpion, I don't want to see him return to the Netherealm to rot.

Isn't Oni a Japanese word for demon?

A specter is like a wraith: Angry Spirits which cannot rest because they still have unfinished business on earth. Revenge it seems, is a specter's main motivation.

The Crow = Specter
Scorpion = Specter
Ghost Rider = Spirit of vengeance who basically acts as a perpetual specter (who will never be satisfied or quenched) inhabiting a host on earth

I'm guessing that Oni are not born in hell, but rather they are exalted demons who at one time were mortal, and have "achieved" or "earned" their demonhood by commiting fearsom acts against humanity. It's my belief that their are only a certain amount of Oni allowed at any one time (much like the four horsemen of the apocalypse), but I could be wrong.

Noobsaibot is part of the Brothers of the Shadow. A band of Ninjas dressed in black. They are only a faction of Shinnok's Netherealm army.

Then you have Quan Chi's undead female assassins, which is another faction part of the army of darkness.

Scorpion, as we all know, is a reincarnated spectre

The brothers of The shadow have disbanded to the best of my knowledge; Shinnok is dead. Noob Saibot was last seen working for Shao Kahn; Quan Chi escaped the Netherealm, as did Sareena. They've all got different missions now. Shinnok's armies are in dissaray.

the only difference being that noob has always been that way, drahmin has been transformed into it from a mortal living in another realm.

and last i knew once scorpion's mission is complete, he will accend to the heavens and his soul will rest. the end of scorpion, forever, unless he's brought back like cage has been.

According to Japanese myth a human can turn into an Oni when they are obsessed enough with hate, violence, or revenge.
According to Drahmin's story, he went insane while in the Netherealm and just started torturing and killing whatever he could find; which is why he turned into an Oni.

Oni is just the japanese word for devil or demon. It's not a speciffic type and there's no difference. You can call any demon or devil Oni in japan and you would be right.

Thanks for the heads up, and just out of sheer curiosity, what would be the difference between using the words "Oni" and "Akuma"?

Actually, there is a difference. An Akuma (not the Street Fighter dude) is your general demon, nothing big.

Oni are a specific breed of Akuma that usually wear tiger-stripe loincloths (like Lum) and help guard the gates of Hell at the behest of Enma, the Japanese version of Lucifer. Their ulitmate goal is to keep the souls of the damned from leaving Hell or rioting, much like a demonic police force. Moloch and Drahmin would be examples of this, keeping the souls in the Netherealm in line through severe brutality.

And, Drahmin is already an Oni, without his mask. He just needs the mask to focus his insanity and rage into a pinpoint fighting style and sense of purpose. Otherwise, he'd go freakin' postal on everyone automatically, instead of going postal whenever he wants to.

Where does it say that Noob Saibot is a demon or oni?

Noob Saibot is a Brother of the Shadow. I don't know what they are or whatever, but they're a cult that worship Shinnok (in my personal opinion, they are to Shinnok what Satanists are to Satan). They live in the Netherealm, but they have the power to come and go as they please. Maybe they are something other than an Oni or a Spectre?

Actually, I have an off-again, on-again Satanist for a friend, and he's told me time and again that Satanists don't 'worship' the devil. They simply don't believe their actions in life have any consequence in the afterlife and, therefore, don't care about being 'pietous' or 'holy'. I'm not sure if Satanists and Devil Worshipers are different, but if so, I'd say that your assumption would be correct with the Devil Worshipers.

I actually liked Onis so much in MkO!

I think they have huge potential, and maybe, they can help to improve Scorpions story a bit more.
