I had a thought for the problem of a 2d pit arena in a 3d game: have a circular arena, then when it says finish him and you do the fatality, the circular edges retract into the thin bridge.

Yep! Give his maps a try in Unreal Tournament, they are really fun! (though on the prison stage it's a bit easy to send someone flying off the parapets with one well aimed rocket.
As for the PIT 1 in MKDA...check out Shang Tsung's Palace courtyard. I believe that is the pit in the distance. Too bad we can't maneuver our characters there though.

Damn...that's sweet. You ought to like, make a whole set of MK levels in that game, and make them availible to download somewhere so we could all play them.
If you go to my website you will see thats what I am doing....

I use UnrealED editor that comes with Unreal Tournament- and I didnt do just plain maps- if you checkout my maps - youll see ive done the authentic MK music for them cutting the original CD tracks into modplug. I imported MK sound fx amd real textures too. The goros lair map utilizes the real MK4 textures for walls, floor, etc. A "Goro" is in their with the real Mk4 skin- hidded in map- tricky to find him-
Pit 1 and deadpool use many true mk textures Ive hande cut and converted too...

Fresh from being inspired, I have started on my own UnrealEd mini project. I have started making the Kombat Tomb. Don't worry about me stealing your idea, I am only doing it for how it looks, I doubt I will make a proper map...and I am still very much learning UnrealEd. Having said that what I have done so far looks good enough. Real textures and all. =D

Spikes on the ceiling, the stage after teh Dead Pool.

I was thinking why it was called Tomb too. Perhaps in an early concept for it it had tomb like elements, or is above a tomb. Or just the fact the place is built to kill people and therefore have dead bodies in it by design. OR Ed Boon doesn't know what a tomb is.
As for my 3D version, it is going slowly now. I suppose I should be happy I got this far as I am learning UnrealEd at the same time. Damn that skybox.

those are amazing. If the pit were in MKDA or 6, I wouldn't make it a round bridge, I would make it a much wider bridge, but still rectangular with the barriers. And the pit bottom could have the tallest spikes far against the wall, and as they come closer, they are smaller and smaller in a circle, so that when you fight, there are some small spikes in the arena, but there are huge ones outside the arena. And if you back up into the spikes or something you'll start bleeding from your legs and lose a little life. Then, as a fatality, you could also throw your opponent out into the deeper spikes (think of the spikes as a jungle, thick and tall at the sides, then slowly thinning out until they're gone in the middle for an arena).
