Vengeance has become the backbone of the majority of the MK character storylines. It’s like it has become the basic fuel of the storyline with most of the other stories revolving around it. Scorpion wants vengeance on Quan Chi. Jax wants vengeance on Hsu Hao. Mavado wants vengeance on Kano. Kenshi wants vengeance on Shang. And the list continues. Since Scorpions quest for revenge started, more and more of this theme has been portrayed throughout the game. Is there any other attribute that could be exploited, other than revenge and vengeance? Or is it going to continue, with more and more characters ultimately joining the game to seek out and kill others rather than having an original storyline?

Other recurring themes include the presence of souls. Why is it that every major boss, with the exception of Shinnok, is after souls? Shang needs them obviously. Quan uses them to revive the DK’s army. Kahn also wanted everyones souls. And now it has been assumed that the DK will also want souls. Even the good guys are being linked with souls. Raiden resurrecting Cage and now Liu Kangs soul entering Kanos body.

And the other recurring theme, and the one I’m really fed up of, is resurrection. They need to stop killing characters if they are only going to bring them back again. Cage, Scorpion, Sindel and Mileena wore out the resurrection idea in the past. Sindel was resurrected in order for MK3 to happen. Now we have Mileena back once again, probably resurrected if she was dead. Why bother? It was a cool idea when they did it the first few times and now it has become completely tiresome and boring imo. I say leave it alone and find something else to concentrate on.

The thing is, the series has taken a complete turn away from the actual tournament itself. Obviously it can only take place once each generation, but the overall tournament idea seems to have been lost. No mention of what or who will represent Earth realm now that Liu Kang has died has been mentioned. Not even by Raiden himself. It’s almost like they don’t care or have forgotten about it.

So what are your opinions on these things? Can MKs plot revolve around these things for as long as it is around or does it need a change? And if yes, what? Or maybe I’m just reading too much into this.

Who was the mortal protector of earthrealm before Liu Kang? Unless I'm mistaken that was the Kung Lao of 500yrs previous. All of the 'chosen' must now protect earthrealm. For all we know there may not be another tournament. Shao Khan has broken the rules and I doubt that the Dragon King gives a damn. There is no need for a champion if there is no tournament.

I think the MK storyline is doing a good job. Ill admit, the characters need more motivation than revenge, but im not gonna bitch about it. And as far as ressurections go, I like the fact that Miday will kill off characters and bring them back later. I think its a cool idea.

I guess there will be those who like the idea and those like myself who don't. The storyline is fine, but as you said there needs to be more motivation. The thing is where will it come from?

I agree with you here. There is no tournament and new chosen ones will more thna likely be chosen at the time of the next tournament. Although it makes me wonder now, because if Kahn dies, is there really any other major threat to earth? Who else wants it? From this, we could say he is alive!

Its most likely that there will be new bosses in MK. I agree with alot of things that your saying Tgrant.

Most bosses come back to get souls and revenge, new bosses need new motives and new moves. Shao kahn, shang, quan, and shinnok are all known to take souls. I want to see a new boss with something else on there mind. We'll have to see what the dragon king does when he comes.

Also, i want to see a new tournament happening soon to. The story also needs to change a bit to. There has to be new twists and new formula for evil, not the same old stuff over and over again.

I also would like to see a new toutnament. And the purpose of it shouldn't be killing as many people as possible so that the bad guy can obtain souls.

Hopefully the Dragon King will not want souls. It's likely he on't need them since his army ahs been revived for him. He'll probably go for world domination and the annihialtion of all in his path.

Yeah, some of your themes I agree with, like the resurection idea getting old, but there are classic good/evil qualifications almost that require these plot devices.

a) The bad guy in MK games always has one goal: Complete domination. Whether it's over Earth, or over everything. With very few exceptions. Shang Tsung wanted to dominate the tournament, Khan wanted to dominate Earth, Shinnok wanted to dominate everything, ditto for Shang & Quan. These guys are evil, and what's evil? Anything that serves the purpose of the evildoer. Gaining power, gaining land, crossing allies, etc.

b) Good guys, in order to be sympathetic or "good," usually have to be wronged in some way by the bad guy. Liu Kangs/Kung Laos destroyed temples, Sonyas partner being killed by Kano, Jax and Hsu Hao's issue, etc etc.

I agree that there can be other motivations, but they almost always circle around vengence for the good, and power for the evil. So while I do think that certain things have become stale storyline-wise, I think that there are still some really good stories, and as long as Boon and co can keep the ideas fresh and redone in a new way, I'll definitely enjoy the story.

As for the tournament idea. It's great in theory, and I would LOVE to see another tournament, Enter the Dragon style like MK1. But I don't know if MK could go back to that well again. They started there, do they really need to do it again? Like I said though, I would love to see another tournament format. Maybe (and this is a bit drastic), have a whole new cast from a whole new generation. Have two or three "decendents" of old characters and Rayden because, well, he's a god, and have a new tournament with new characters. Start it over. But then, this would be an idea for MK7 obviously. Still, it'd be cool to see where they'd take the new characters from the same old starting point. It'd have to be new and unique though, not just another old style tournament.

as I rember MKDA was a tourment held by the DA themselfs, but I whould like to see Mortal Kombat the tourment be held again. the idea of a new roster from a new genration might be a good idea for MK7 or maybe just a branch of for one game only ,so those that didn't like it could still play MK7 with there favorite charters.
