Tekken just bores me i rented it a few years ago the fighting engine isnt that great its just boring and the fighters are just generic i feel the same way about soul calibur too it makes me sleepy.
You don't play Mortal Kombat for the "serious fighting engine." Most often, "serious fighting engines" deduce into nothing than a dazzling show of physics and martial arts that nobody understands or cares about. Games are supposed to be fun, not demonstrations.

You can't really say that Tekken is better than Mortal Kombat or that Mortal Kombat is better than Tekken, because they both have very strong and different positive qualities and people will like these games for different reasons.
Some people think that the deeper the gameplay is, the more fun the game will be, but this is only a matter of opinion. Presentation also plays a huge role, but some people won't care for it if the gameplay matches their style.
Personally, gameplay wise, my favorite fighter is (drum roll please)...................... Marvel VS. Capcom 2 !!!!

It depends on what you're into. I personally find Tekken games to be boring, slow, and irritating because of that. It may look better than MK but MK imo is funner to play, and I think it will be this time around as well. But that's my opinion. I don't have any intention of pushing my opinion onto others with a bunch of analyzations and facts. Everyone will have their own opinion, and ever popular game franchise has it's fanboy following, so it doesn't really matter what anyone has to say about it.

Based on responses so far I've gathered one thing in my mind.
The majority of MK fans are not fighting game fans.
As confusing as this sounds it is true, I see so many people all wanting the same thing, blood, violence etc.
These aren't what makes a good fighting game, fighting game essentials are based on gameplay, and with so many people going in an opposite path, it seems that MK would be better off being an RPG/Adventure game + violence and blood.
It seems no-one wants to put the time and effort in to be good at fighting games, all because they don't like what they see.
It kinda makes me think MK's are casual gamers' games.
So asking casual gamers to pick between a hardcore game and a casual game seems a bit silly in the end.

In my experiences, even casual gamers chose other fighters over MKDA, unless they wanted to see some fatalities to laugh at.

When you use a general statement like "Which is better; Tekken 5 or MK" you loose a lot of an arguments integrity. You need to state something like "why is T's gameplay better then MK's" or "why is MK's character development better than T's." You need to break it down into more digestable componets and something that isn't so vague. Heh, anyways.
First of all T, and the ensuing T5 is simply a "fighting game." No shit gimmicks; just depth and implementation of a designers concept. Which is intended to allow the players to develop; both in skill and creativity. You have a plethora of movement options, properties, priority and play style. MK DOES NOT have this. If after all the debates that those "hating" on MK have made, and you still think MK and MKD has these attributes, then you seriously need to play some quality comp.
Which brings me to another point. Tekken is NOT slow. I get so tired of that shit. Please, if you would, define SLOW. That is so arbitrary. What? The walking in tekken is slow? The dash, the back dash, the overall move execution, what? I guaran-damn-tee that if ANYONE plays someone who actually knows how to play Tekken they will see that it is not slow. Play a Haya whoring Nina, a Lee or Kaz who rushes that shit down with pure effeciency. Someone who wave dashes all over your ass and you're too fucking afraid to get up off the ground for fear of mad oki, but you're getting waved into a wall, so you better do something.
I know the kind of players who might say "Tekken is slow." They're the same kind of players who I see at the aracade picking law and just flip kick all fucking day, or pick bob and smash on 4. Well, durrr, the game is going to play slow, because it's being played wrong, lol. If that law player understood the abusability and effeciency of buffered qcf+1,2,3 or d+2,3 and the bob player understandes his preasure game and triple SS, the game has no choice but to NOT play slow. A game cannot play slow when all you do is abuse 10 and 12 frame moves. It does, however, play slow when you do 25 frame moves that have ass recovery.
Sorry, didn't mean to go on a rant, heh. Anyways, to answer the question:
T is infinately deeper than MK, not complex, but deeper. Though it does hold a greater complexity ratio; Namco expects their players to have a brain, unlike Midway. You cannot argue over the issue of depth, sorry, just can't. "But depth is an issue of oppinoin." Maybe. The issue of depth is not black and white. There are, however, clearly defined shades of grey. If you cannot deferentiate between these shades, sorry.
MK has a great story? Maybe. Though, that statement holds more "oppinoin" than that of depth. You can mechanically measure depth; weather or not an individual want to be objective enough to take in those results is another question. Though, as I get older, the more and more the MK story begins to mean less. Someone died? Oh...no....wait, they'll just be resurected in the next MK.
Which is a big problem. Whenever someone dies, that death cannot be taken with emotional weight, because it means nothing. Emotion is THE key to story telling. You have to relate to the individuals emotions. How the hell does MK do that? It doesn't. Again, it's just a gimick, just like it's fighting system. There is no substance, no soul. Nothing to relate to, just superficial fluff that many players, apparently, buy into.
And that's why T is better. It's not fluff, it's substance. It's not a gimmick, it's a game. A game that allows the player to develop in skill because it presents a multitude of facets that the player can exploit. Since when did gimmicks and fluff become core gameplay? Core gameplay is core gameplay, it cannot be substituted for anything. It's nothing but pure design; in the gameplay, character development, everything. MK simply lacks this concept of substance.
BTW, T5 is being released in about two or three weeks, mid october, into US arcades. I think Korea is getting it a few days earlier. Japan is apparently running behind - ironic, is'nt it - because they are haveing issues with the online funtions which are ONLY for japan, at the moment. And the Feb 22 date is old. It's prolly' going to be summer of 05 or even fall. I don't even think T5 nationals will be completed before March. Regionals were to start, I think, January? Meh, I foget.
For the record, this post is NOT a flame, lol. So if you take it out of context, it's your own damn fault.

Tekken...blah. It's ok, it's definatly not slow and I'm pretty good at it.If we are talking real fighting games I prefer Virtura Fighter.
Some people like fantasy and nothing realistic at all in a fighting game...others look for realism and strategy. Me..well I look for both otherwise I wouldn't be in a MK forum being pumped up for the release of MKD. Tekken is a better fighting game due to it's technicality and "stuff" but the more popular game would have to be MK. I also look at it this way... Any game that has a screen featuring 2 people facing eachother in a funny stance and then start beating the crap out of eachother weither it be by weapon (Soul Calibur), fists (Tekken/Virtura Fighter), or Fireballs and stuff (Street Fighter) IT'S A FIGHTING GAME! It wouldn't be in the fighting genre if it wasn't a fighting game...I know thats stating the obvious and stuff but thats just how I feel on weither this fighting game is a fighting game or not. Now there are different types of fighting games which a few people have mentioned. Gimmick Fighters...MK, SF and etc. Your more realistic and technical fighters Tekken and Virtura Fighter. And more...but me...I've played every type of fighter and I have to say...I like both of the above types equally! Sometimes it's nice to take a break from Gimmick fighting and over the top crap and to play a good realism fighter, other times realism just isn't enough and you are looking for something exciting and really fun. (While some Gimmicks don't pull it off well others do) Thats how I see it anyway and no I'm not shoving my opinion on anyone else either...I'm just trying to make my point and be friendly about it as possible

Yeah Tekken is obviously the better fighting game.
Midway simply cannot create a good fighting engine, so they try to hide their terrible one with a wall of fatalities, death traps and mini-games.
I understand if people think Tekken sucks, because when I was an incredible scrub of my own, I also hated the fact that I couldnt do anything when I popped in the quarter at the arcades.
Little did I know that the problem was that I sucked greatly and didn't know anything about fighting games.
I have since got into SC2 and I absolutely love the game. I think it's really deep and fun. I've been reading a lot about Tekken, VF4 and DOA lately. When I tried Tekken again last weekend (with an understood concept of what makes a good fighting game), suddendly it didnt look so bad as before.
In fact, it was extremely satisfying.
Then I think of MKDA. It's no use saying how this game is horrible, seen as a fighting game.
So yeah, Tekken 5 will absolutely be better than MK:D. You can say elsewise, but that would be the same as claiming that SUPERMAN 64 was a better adventure game than ZELDA:OOT.

Why are there people in these forums that are probably gonna get this game anyway but are just putting Tekken over more or less? (Sorry if I'm wrong but it justs seems like most of you are posting that way) I mean why would people come in here to say how "bad" MK is and are just making Tekken look a whole lot better...I mean it is a pretty good game but that just doesn't make much sense to me... And about the guy that made the above statement with the Superman compared to Zelda...that doesn't exaclty work for this topic, cause MK doesn't have shitty controls and graphics...
I got a chance to do something that not alot of people get to do, play Tekken in Japan. Tekken is a very deep game. There juggling system is phenomenal and there characters are always well developed. But ..........
I'm an MK fan. Have been since MK1. You can't beat MK for originality and just overall fun gameplay. Viewing some of the videos, it looks as if MKD has caught up to Tekken in the juggle department. MK's character development has always been very good. I'm expecting alot from this game. I think it'll be the best fighting game in years and for at least a few years to come.

Although i like tekken,i have a couple of problems with it.
Tekken is the same thing every game. 2 new characters, and maybe a new feature here and there.
MK, however, is a new thing every game. more blood, features and a whole lot of cool stuff. MKD will be the best MK yet.

I agree. Except with the MKD will be the best ever. MK2 is still my on going fav.

this is just silly and pointless. different people prefer different things. tekken and mk are both great fighting series and offer totally different fighting experiences. as to whether tekken 5 or mk6 are better is entirely a matter of opinion. the bottom-line is both are good. this was also pointless when mkda and sc2 came out. believe it or not but it is possible to enjoy all 3 great fighting series; mk, tekken, and sc.
It basically boils down to this for me...
MKDA and MKD are games just for fun. It's fun to do the dial a combos, fatalities and dig for secrets. I'll probably only play MKD until I've found everything and the inevitable broken shit starts taking over online. Still, I am highly anticipating and will have a great time playing MKD. The fighting engine may suck once you get to higher levels of play and I doubt Midway will ever be able to release a truly balanced fighter BUT over the years, the MK series has brought me a great deal of joy and for that, it will always have a place on my shelf.
On the other hand, I will most likely be playing Tekken 5 throughout the next year and perhaps beyond. The fighting engine is just so much deeper and yields greater rewards.

The thing that I like about tekken is its updated fighting engine, there isnt a tekken game that isnt smoother and having different types of combos. In the new one the comboes look like they link alot better than the last one. Instead of depending on sidestepping, now you are thinking about linking combos.
Then again tekken does lack storyline and character depth (my opinion) and it lacks certain things that would make it unique (the most being their unblockable attacks)
but I think they are both great games and have their good and bad points. If they were to mix tekkens fighting engine with Mk characters and story but somehow keep the 3 fighting styles then that would totally rock! (in my opinion of course
)
oh ya and raven is da shiznite!!! those were the first movies I saw of him and I like his fighting (just those few moves) better than alot of the MK moves. I gotta give the tekken people major props on him!
