This project was supposed to have been posted before MKA's release but due to time constraints with college and also being Portal Guard again around that time, I didn't get to finish this on time. I've been working on it now and again since then and 2 months on, it's finally done. This is my biggest MK project yet and I hope you all like it.
The Art of Unlocking
Given that there are so many characters in MKA, the unlocking process should have been a big one, imo. We were told that we wouldn’t only have to do Konquest to unlock everyone which at the time was brilliant. What we ended up with was Konquest unlocking, a Vault and some codes. And furthermore, only 4 characters to unlock.
The Art of Unlocking is an unlocking process. I am going to explore the different modes and list ways of unlocking every character across the modes. The core idea of this was to have you start with absolutely no characters unlocked and begin on Konquest and then proceed from there onto the other modes after gaining one or two characters there. The other focus is longevity and replay value.
The ideas themselves could be used just for normal unlocking if only a small number of the roster were unlocked. Obviously preferences would differ in regards to this. By no means am I saying that an MK game should start with no characters unlocked, but it is something I would have liked personally for MKA.
In regards to the ideas:
Some examples may be specified to a particular character or could be used for another. I’m just placing whoever wherever and doing my own thing here.
Note 1: All requirements for Arcade mode must be done on Medium difficulty or higher.
Note 2: The modes used for unlocking a character are listed after the unlock title and in a bracket. Any modes that I mention here are here just for example for the unlocking tasks. Obviously some of them are not in MKA.
Note 3: Survival mode would get harder as you advance and Team and Tournament modes would need to be on medium difficulty or higher.
Note 4: Online tasks are optional. There will be an offline method, which will usually be more of a challenge.
Note 5: Your profile must be loaded for all of these.
See if you can spot any references I've made.
I present to you, the Art of Unlocking. Enjoy!

As leader of the Tarkata, Baraka is to work the hardest or else face the Emperor himself. However, unknown to Shao Kahn, Baraka has hidden a burning ambition to be a professional haircutter, only this ambition has been hindered by the fact that he manages to chop off peoples heads by accident when tending to their hairy needs.
Baraka now sees this task as a way to raise his skills. Your job is to help Baraka impress Shao Kahn by trimming down the Wastelands and trimming down areas so as to leave impressions and images in the overgrowth. You will follow on screen guidelines which have been outlined by the Tarkata in order to achieve Baraka’s goal.

You must return him to the newly built Special Forces lab and follow the instructions he gives you so as to fix the malfunction. Only then will he be able to assist you and kick some ass again. Hell hath no fury, like Reptile scorned! Capture the maddened Reptile! (Arcade, Versus – P1 takes priority, Survival, Konquest)
Speaking to certain Outworlders will trigger this mission.
Having recently gained possession of his body once again, Reptile wanders the realm of Outworld venting his fury on anyone and anything. The enraged lizard has been seen attacking trees, barrels or even rocks and other strange things in a somewhat maddened state. The locals have deemed him dangerous but all fear him too much to try and to stop him. Enlisting your help, they tell you the lizard is nomadic and shows up in random locations. They also give you a supply of nets with which to capture him with.
Upon obtaining them, whenever you visit a new Outworld area or fight on an Outworld based stage in one of the aforementioned modes, Reptile may show up in his maddened state. He will mistake you for an enemy (Cyrax, Shang Tsung, Nitara, Quan Chi etc) and will not think twice about taking you down!
Up until you defeat and capture him the match stipulations will be as follows: Reptile has heightened speed and strength due to his fury and the effect of Onaga’s bodily takeover.
Whenever you floor him or win a round, you will have the chance to capture Reptile in a net. He can break free using his acid spit or claws. The wise would seek to damage these areas of the body quickly so he cannot break free.
You will gain Reptile’s services after his capture.
Race to the finish! Complete Arcade mode within a set time! (Arcade)

The natives of Outworld who managed to ambush him and tie up have him hung by his spear from a tree and are beating him to death. It is unknown to them that he is already deceased.
Your task is to free Scorpion so that round 2 can commence. Using his spear and his flame and ninja abilities, you must decimate every last Outworlder in your path so that the hunt for Quan Chi can continue. You must not get caught again by them otherwise you’ll have to try again. Once Scorpions wrath has been felt and he escapes without hindrance, he is yours to command.

You must defend your life or lose it.
You will face him in Portal Kombat. Shinnok is a portal master and before he was banished he used them to travel to other realms. Now he uses them in battle as well to move small distances to escape his enemy and get in a sneak attack in battle. He lines the throne room with multiple portals for him.
Up until you defeat him in 3 rounds, the match stipulations are as follows:
Shinnok will use the portals at will to move around or attack from another direction. The portals are instant transporters so you must be on your guard. Trying to enter a portal yourself will cause heavy damage.
Defeat Shinnok to unlock him.

Look out for her neck brace, her clothing, a boot, her eyes or even her shadow etc. Using the Wii mote after spotting one, you must point to the object and press A to reveal Tanya who will then flee. Okay, at this moment I don't have enough time to tell you just how fucking awesome this is, but I will be back to drool as I post my thoughts. From what I read, I've drenched myself. I know you know which four I love the most.

Some very good idea here, definitely would be better then how MKA is now. I liked how there was a mix of tough ones, easy ones and just plain wtf? (Baraka immediately comes into mind...) ones.
My faves were Kitana's, Jarek's, Tanya's and Cage's (what would happen if you took away his glasses btw?). They all seemed interesting and fun, especially Tanya's.
The only one's that I didn't like were Khameleon, Hsu Hao, Onaga and Mokap. They seemed too long and not worth it, but I guess so did unlocking Liu Kang in MKD. I guess I am just too lazy to put in all of that effort
Still, an awesome job here. I much prefer this to what is currently in MKA, and they all seemed entertaining, not just countless battles. A definite 10/10 for these, great ideas!

Awesome thread bro, I always wanted there to be unique and creative ways to unlock characters as well, especially in MKA. You pretty much covered everything, great work.
And harder the better IMO. After you do certain tasks, there should be eerie noises/sounds that you hear in the krypt or at the main menu. Perhaps whispering or someone quietly saying letter after letter of a name or place.....this is something that I'd love to see in a future MK, a difficult and hard way to unlock secret characters.
Hints on stages should be ways of unlocking as well. Wheather changes can play a big role....something like lightning constantly flashing, when it happens you'd have to quickly press a button or two a few times; then when it happens again after a while you'd see a dark figure appear on the next flash to confirm the code.
Secret characters that appear before matches should also say alot more. This includes places they visit once in a while, something part of their storyline, a certain day at a certain time, and/or they might tell you hints on doing certain tasks first. Some characters may tell you to retrieve something or slay someone in order for you to battle them.
Some characters, like Havik IMO, would be great at mocking/teasing you, and when they do this they sometimes throw clues. For an example, Havik would appear in Konquest and at times you would hear his echo telling you to come get him or find him here/there. He could be anywhere from ontop of a New York building in Earthrealm, to a maze-like jungle in the living forest. Also, as soon as Havik starts talking to you, a mini-clock appears on the bottom left screen that times you. You have a time limit to meet Havik or he will disappear; don't get it twisted with being easy because it would be very difficult. Sometimes you'd only have a minute or 30 seconds, depending on where he is, and if you fail you'd hear his annoying loud laugh. After that, you'd have to wait to hear from him again.
Just some more ideas. Again, great thread bro......if you want you can check out my post in ThePredator151's stickied thread located in the future Mk section. Not alot in there, but similar things to this post.

Lol! I'm guessing Sonya, Mileena, Tanya and Sheeva. I'm probably wrong with one of them though lol.
I look forward to your reply.

I'm glad you like the overall ideas, but have to disagree on the length of most of those you disliked. The only one I can agree with that is long is Onaga's. The rest given how most people play an MK game is nothing. The Mokap one is all auto based so you'd only need to play as a character once and you only need to do that 32 times.
Khameleons is short! Given the amount of time I know people spend on MK, 26 hours is nothing. The hard part is dividing it between the females. I understand that not everyone might want to do that, but for most, this is an easy job.
They're all shorter than they seem with the exception of Onaga. But again, combine this one with Khameleons and it's easily done. Those of us who play online would find Onaga's and Khameleons unlock a breeze. I cna see what you mean about how they could be long though. I guess it's just a matter of if you're willing to make the effort or not lol.

As I said to MINION before, I am extremely lazy :p
The Hsu Hao one isn't that long, but having to memorize a whole new style seems a bit much for me considering I dont play the game very competitively, and learning a style for a character I dont even like seems like too much effort.
With Khameleon, it would be easy with characters like Sheeva, Jade, Tanya, Mileena etc., but for some (like Frost, Kitana etc.) I dont like using them at all on MKA, and to be playing through Arcade mode for 2 hours (as you know, I dont have online), it would get boring.
With the Mokap one, maybe I read it wrong, but from what I gather, you have to go through half of the roster and do every single move they learn, which becomes tiresome after getting through half of a character. I dunno, it might be me though.
Anyway, I still think that they were all quite good, even those ones. It was just that when I read them, they seemed to require more effort then the others, and the characters werent any that I would have wanted to do any extra for (except maybe Khameleon). Meh, as I said before, I am lazy
Still, awesome ideas for all of them, and still, 10/10.
