We all remember the Brutality. The Brutality saw the character pummelling the opponent to death in a huge combo string until they exploded. They did look impressive and were probably homage to the Ultra Combo in the Killer Instinct games, but these were bloodier. Also, the Brutalities all ended with an uppercut that blew up the opponent. This let them down in a sense as they all ended the same way and after the series of hits, the end was always a predictable mess. I say mess because of the multiple limbs, rib cages, skulls etc that were suddenly produced from one person.

Now I like how MK has things at the moment, with just the Fatalities as the death move of choice. I dislike the Hara Kiri’s but if an Ality were to return, then I would like it to be the Brutality. Only they would need to be different to what they once were.

The Elements of the Brutality

A brutality should be one or more of the following:

Flashy
Brutal
Bloody
Satisfying
Fast or Slow

These are just some of the main points. The Brutalities would be based around these things.

Return of the Brutality

The Ultra Combos on Killer Instinct saw you add a button mid combination to a combo whilst the character had minimal health left and this allowed you to go into an automatic Ultra Combo if the combo you started connected. I would like this to be the same on MK if the Brutality were brought back, however, I would like there to be more than one Brutality per character. All would be unique and based around the styles the character uses and all would end in death! Allow me to introduce a newer Brutality.

The Brutality would either be done in weapon stance with a mix of weapon attacks, kicks, punches and special moves or in the characters hand to hand style and be orientated solely around that stance, again with special moves added perhaps. Or they can branch through both styles and start from a different one allowing for another 2 unique combo deaths. This gives us 4 unique Brutalities per character.

The difference this time is that the Brutality is not solely a combo, but it can be a poetic dance type affair that is still flashy and gory, but also brutal and satisfying. It may not even be that and could be more like a severe, brutal beat down. Characters like Jax would go for the brutal beat down. Characters like Kitana and Ashrah would be more likely to opt for the dance type Brutality.

Here are some examples.

Shinnok: Performing a brancher Brutality starting in his hand to hand style.

Shinnok will deliver a flurry of kicks and punches with a few spin attacks and one such spin he’ll conjure his Amulet Staff and whack the opponent in the side. A few twirling attacks and blows from the staff ends with Shinnok’s hands glowing and he does a power uppercut sending the opponent skywards. Shinnok then raises his still glowing fists and utters some incantations and we see a volley of purplish projectiles suddenly launch themselves at the opponent’s body. As they fall, Shinnok utters one last incantation which summons a skeletal hand out of the ground which acts as a table. Shinnok jumps towards the opponent with his staff raised and we see it transform into a giant blade. The opponent lands on the hand and Shinnok brings the blade down on them, cutting them in half. He stands back up and the blade reverts back to its original form Queue the win pose!

Kitana: Performing a weapon stance Brutality

Kitana slashes with the fans cutting her opponent open and blood gushes out naturally. She dances around the opponent swiping at their back and sides and comes back around to the front. She jumps into the Pretty Kick special move which sends the opponent backwards, but she then uses her Fan Lift (MKDA version) to bring them back in before delivering an uppercut knocking the opponent skywards. She does the Fan Lift again (MKT version with reverse effect) and pulls them down out of the air and uses the Pretty kick again. She launches a fan after the opponents body with a perfect aim that swipes the head clean off. She proceeds to pose.

Stryker: Performing a weapon stance Brutality

Stryker pulls out his tonfa and just starts whacking the opponent with it with sheer aggression and power. To make it seem even more real, the opponent could try to defend themselves from his attacks but Stryker is too strong. A low blow to the knees and a spin behind with a further blow to the back of the legs grounds the opponent. Stryker delivers the KO blow with a powerful stroke to the head.

Raiden: Performing a brancher Brutality starting in his weapon stance.

This is a branching Brutality starting in the weapon stance. Raiden goes into a volley of strikes and blows with his staff before switching to his first style and adding a few more powerful; punches to the face. He then goes into a teleport frenzy which sees him teleporting above, to the side, and behind the opponent adding extra attacks (like Nightcrawler in the X-Men 2 movie intro). The last teleport attack is a dual kick from below which launches the opponent skyward where lightning bolts quickly blast the opponent into oblivion. This one is conditional and requires an outdoor or open area to perform.

Shang Tsung: Performing a hand to hand style Brutality.

This is a hand to hand stance Brutality. I’ll assume Shang has Crane and he’ll start off by uttering an incantation which will allow all his blows to soul steal. He then goes into several Flapping Wing kicks (Attack 3 on MKDA) and adds several punches. With each hit part of the opponents soul leaves their body and into Shangs. You’ll see them decay slowly. He then uses his Ground Fire special move to send the enemy upwards before shooting a Flaming Skull which shatters the withered body fully freeing the last of their soul which he then absorbs.

So there are all 4 versions of the new Brutality for you. Let me know what you think and maybe make up your own!

When you think about it, the new create a fatality system is like a brutality, only slower with less hits.

Pretty much said everything I would've said.wink

IMO if they brought back Brutalities, I think it would be more unique if character weapons were used more than just physical punches/kicks. It would makes things more unique and different because each character has his/hers own special weapon. Granted to this, I also think it would be sweet if special attacks were somehow involved in the Brutality as well......maybe at the ending "final blows" of the brutality.

I also think something like a Fatality at the end of a Brutality would be bad ass as well, but that's just my opinion. I imagine Baraka starting off his brutality with numerous slashes & swipes. As the brutality continues, speed and power in Baraka's slashes rise; more blood; louder character screams can be heard. At the end of Baraka's Brutality, he could end it off with a Fatality by decapitating you, or uppercutting you into the air; then slicing you in half on the way down. This I would love to see.

Characters like Rain and Scorpion would be perfect for using "special attacks" in Brutalities. Imagine sometime during a Brutality, Rain summons a cloud that pours streams of lightning down at the opponent, injuring him/her even more. Scorpion could be going at his opponent with multiple punches/kicks; then he would pause for a blink second and move back some inches from his opponent. With his ninja mask already off to begin with, he would fire 10 big fire balls (from his skull face) at his opponent which would all happen fast-paced. Right after the fire balls, Scorpion would rush back in and continue his Brutality, except with his ninja sword. IMO special attacks can be implanted into a Brutality at anytime, but I see them working great mostly at the ending part. I imagine Scorpion using his fire balls just like how Riptor (Killer Instinct) uses his Acid puke numerous times during his "Ultra Combo".

Awesome thread bro.

Oh that was beautiful!

Tanya

She starts of with a Corkscrew kick. Quickly Tanya lands on her feet and blasts her opponent with her fireballs before they land. Just before they do she launches into her Yeu Chuen pop-up combo and into her style branch into the Kobu Jutsu. She slashes and slashes at her opponent just as they fall she jams both Kobu Jutsu into her opponents rib cage and pulls them to a stand before they fall backwards. She then grabs hold of their head, vaults up throwing her legs into the air. Pushes herself upwards and lands with the back of her thighs on her opponensts shoulders. Their head between her legs. She leans in and kisses them on the cheek. Tanya then pivots. Snapping their neck. She leans back and flips to get back on her feet. Her opponents body now a mass of cracking, jerking and twisting gore.

Pretty cool work their Tgrant. But I think that Brutalitys take place DURING
a match instead of after it.It could be like the rage meter they have in MKT
or SamSho,where it fuels as your guy/gal gets hit.

Technically what is coming back is not a brutality. It is just a combo of moves. not only kicking and pppunching though. and the opponent does not blow up at the end. Bringing back Brutalities or Animalities would be nice though.

Awesome!

When I saw this I didnt think I was going to find something that would actually talk about improving the brutality system, so I was prepared to simply say I much rather they forget about that particular “ality” because it was pretty boring and silly in MKT.

But after reading all your bits of depth and info on how to improve this system and the way it could work in such a “poetic” fashion, Im all for it.

I really liked the ideas (Keith you did an excellent Tanya Brutality btw, sounds brilliant!), and though I doubt we will ever see something this cool, I would definitely say yes to something like this.

Great stuff. Here goes a small list of those I think could do it in different fashions:

*Elegant Brutality* (Something royal)

Sindel
Kitana
Jade
Rain
Rayden
Fujin

*Sarcastic Brutality* (mocking/laughing at the victims during the process of a fluid and aggressive brutality)

Sonya
Mileena
Shao Kahn
Johnny Cage
Kano

*Aggressive Brutality* (simply violent and with no mercy)

Sheeva
Kobra
Shang Tsung
Sareena
Goro
Kintaro
Motaro
Drahmin

Sick idea tgrant, i would like brutality to come back as well. i hate the excess of flesh and bone. plus the idea of using the characters moves and weapon as ways to make the brutality different for each character.

my idea of the brutality comes in the form of challenge and interactivity of the performence of the move itself. i would like it if the brutality would be preformed as a mini game seqence, kinda of like God of war.

once the brutality has begun, a series of button input appears on screen randomly so that it takes foucus rather then remebering a bunch of inputs.

for the certain action that takes place in the brutality, and different input is needed to advance to the next phase. so for EX

Any striking animations will use- Square, triangle, circle and X as they random appear on the screen in a DDR/God of War way

Any pulling or ripping animation will use- rapid taping of a button much like a test your might or again God of war.

Any snapping or twisting animations will use- turning motion on the left analog stick or d- pad in the direction of the nap or twist much like the medusa mini game in god of war.

any special moves will use- the normal inputs is the same fashion of the striking moves.
----

with all these aspects, the brutality won't be something you just punch in and it works, you need to watch the screen for the commands to pop up, and then quick punch them in.

so now it is a test of reaction time and skill, plus it will feel more hands on.

Brutalities always happened after a match when the Finish Him/Her message came up. My idea would allow you to do them towards the end of a persons life bar. I wouldn't want there to be a meter as that would probably mean you could do them earlier than you should be able to unless it was limited to second or third round use. They should only be able to be done towards the end of the second or third round.

The brutality should be done differently than Li Mei's fatality from MKD.

I liked Scorpion's brutality from MKT. I agree with the fact that weapons should be involved, however, to a certain extent.

Li Mei's MKD Fatality rocked. If she had a Brutality like these, she could use part of that one in it or even end it with that Fatality. That'd be kickass imo.

Very good ideas tgrant! I like they way you made each person's unique and flashy. I kinda see the new Fatality System as this because of the progression of hits and not really specialized moves, which kinda makes me think if they just sped that up and made more hits that would become the Brutality System and could have each character with original fatalities.

I've always had that idea in my head just as a fatality. But to use it like that as part of a brutality would be nice too!

Wow, at first when I read the title, I was like: "Brutalities? ugnh." .. but when I read your examples I absolutely loved the ideas! Those brutalities kicked ass! And I suppose if an 'ality were to return, better the brutality then the Friendships, Babalities, or god-awful Animalities.

Very good Job Ty.

Great thread, Tgrant, but I don't really see brutalities as really necessary.

Personally, I'd rather see one, or two really gruesome Fatalities per character, along with one friendship per character to give a comedy option, because right now, a lot of Mk's comedy is coming from its fatalities (which it shouldn't!).

Friendships, the cringe-worthy, high camp finisher that must return. Come on, you know you want them to return in full 3-D, and with opponent interaction, too! Mk3 all over again, baby!

........................................................................................................................................

LIU KANG: BICYCLE TRIP:

Liu Kang runs off the screen leaving his staggering opponent, only to return seconds later with a large, two-seater bicycle.
The opponent, recovering from the shock of battle looks pleasantly suprised. They join Liu Kang on the bicycle, and together they do a short ring of the arena, singing in their own, beautifully off-key way;
"Blood drops keep falling on my head, but that doesn't mean that I am really quite dead... dadada-da..."

MILEENA: ORAL HYGENE:

Mileena picks this moment to pull out a pretty pink toothbrush, and some nice toothpaste of legally ficticious origin. She then shows the world that although she may be a vicious assassin, she still takes care of her mouth!

RAIDEN: DEADLY APPLIANCE:

Bored of fighting, Raiden leaves the stunned opponent and pulls out a TV, a games console (Based on which console version you are playing), and a comfy armchair.
Eager to play "Brutal Fighting" Raiden looks around for a socket for the TV and console plugs. Unable to find one, he predictably uses his own shocking power to bring life to the appliances,

Unforunately, he overdoes it a bit... resulting in a large explosion.

i would love to see the brutalities back... and i really think they should have a spectacular finishing move

Kung Lao

Starts with a series of punches in the upper area of the body. Then he starts the whirlwind kicks. He goes back to some punches and mid-low kicks and he finishes it with a flurry of hat dices that cut the character into many many pieces.

Kenshi

He supplies some powerful fists to the opponet's face. He starts a series of kicks that knock the other player sideways. Then he pulls out his katana he goes into a blade frenzy, cutting through the enemy savagely and he finishes it with a telekinetic slam that breaks the victim into many many pieces(again).

Baraka

He had an awesome brutality in mkt. He should start with a series of back hands, then deliver some double high kicks. Now come out the blades, a series of blade swipes, a blade fury and to top it off.... he shoves both blades into the opponent's chest and brutaly cracks the victim open.grin

if you like them tell me i'll think of even more >:)>:)>:)
