Threads Moved

posted08/01/2007 09:12 PM (UTC)byI have a question for mods and I'd also like some input from the community on this.
Recently, Maverick and myself created a couple of threads for the Xbox community to discuss. One was the "Who Would Win in a Fight" thread and the other was the "Trailers" thread.
Now I know, neither of them had anything to do with Mortal Kombat. But they were meant for discussion with the Xbox community. I even explained this position at the top of my thread and requested that it not be moved to another forum.
The reason I requested that was because of what has now happened. Both threads were moved into the "General Discussion" forum tonight. Already, they've been buried by a ton of topics. They now only serve to continue to be buried and lost unless they're responded to by random members whom we don't know and don't care for their input.
Xbox has a tight-knit community. Most of the reason for that is because we've been around for a long time together and we know each other pretty well. So when topics are made in the Xbox forum, regardless of topic, it's because they're meant to be viewed and responded to by our friends in the Xbox community.
Can't we leave threads in the Xbox forum in here? Compared to the MKO members that view the other forums, Xbox is fairly small. I don't see how we'd be bothering anybody by keeping our community discussions within the community.

Ahhhhso...
So essentially, it is your contention that this board should be a sort of an adjunct forum within MKO where the XBox Board is kind of like what Chinatown is to New York or Los Angeles? Is that the general gist of what you're saying? I just want to be sure I'm hitting the middle of the painted target here. Cause if it is and I'm somewhat close to Robin Hood with my accuracy with this, then I'd have to say, no..
Now, with regard towards online play with games other than MK, I've sort of given some leeway on both the XBox and PS2 Boards since, as you say in regards to this one, it's a tight-knit group of people and people that frequent the other boards might be attracted to them. That's just my opinion at this time and that's how I've kind of allowed those particular threads to stay on both boards so far. However, these particular threads that were moved are clearly more of a general nature and should go in General Discussion.
As how you've put it, you’re asserting that no one here wishes to associate with people that frequent the Gen. Discussion Board soley for the reason that they don't have the MK XBox Board official decoder ring that all the regular members have? Well, as charming as that is, in a isolationist sort of way, those threads belong there. If you don't wish to associate yourself with those people, that's fine, but we can't have a mini forum within a forum where some want to seclude themselves from the rest of the site and have their own General Discussion. MKO functions as a 'whole' forum or the most part with designated boards for specific topics of discussion catered for specific aspects of desired conversation. MK Movies and Media has it's specific purpose, so does Pocket and so does XBox.
I mean, I'm sure there are regulars that frequent the Fan Submission Board that are more familiar with each other than some who frequent the Pocket Board and have a sort of a comradely with one another. That's not saying that you must say hi to "Jackie Sue" and "Henry Lee" in the MK: Armageddon Board at least once a day just to get to know them. If you want to keep your interests entirely here with the people you know where it relates to online play, that's fine. But what you're proposing is just not how it is, should be, or how it will go down in the foreseeable future.
And honestly, as sad as it is with a number of threads in General Discussion, they get pushed down the page by other threads. That’s the nature of the boards on just about every other forum out there. Again, MKO is a community made up of individuals and people within certain groups, true. However, everyone contributes to it, or I would like to hope that people contribute to it with the thought that they are a part of the community. I mean, it’ll kinda look strange if you make some grand and inspiring thread here and someone from General Discussion finds it and cares to throw in their two cents. What makes that person’s input less important than Gtrax’s? Is there going to be some sort of Xbox Board litmus test before people would be accepted to post in here? Are you going to ask for Xbox membership cards at the door? Lol I mean really, is there going to be a standard here?
Believe it or not, there are people who actually have an acuity level higher than a raisin. Yeah, I know it’s crazy to think about it whilst in the Xbox Board 4 Life mode, but yeah, surprisingly there are smart people there. Go figure!

Ghost, I think you've totally missed Choas' point.
The point he's trying to make is that threads opened on XBOX forum is aimed at XBL users. Not just for every or any MKO member. It is a tight community and those kind of threads help the community together. MKA is not as hot as MKD so it's obvious that once in a while members of the community would digress into general conversation.
The whole 'if not MK related, take it off' attitude is not really needed. Yes, there should be a line but if around 3 out of very 10 threads opened are of different nature, but I don't see this having an adverse effect on the image of MKO as a matter of it's positive thing. It keeps people interested.
It's just like when we're at work or even in a very serious meeting, we don't just talk about work related stuff; we mix it all up and that's how communities get better

Ghost, there's no need to be so condescending. I'm not downplaying the rest of the forums on the site. I'm simply making a request. My point is that we'd like to have our threads kept within the Xbox forum so that the Xbox community can see them. When they get moved to the "General" forum or wherever they get lost and buried because of (as you acknowleged) there's a TON of threads being made constantly.
Also, it's not that I think anybody else's opinions or contributions to discussion are inferior to ours. I just don't know them. We know each other and we like to have discussions with each other. If I wanted to have a bunch of responses to a thread by random people, I could go to any site. I make them here, because I'd like to get the responses from the people I know.
Sometimes, they're not discussions about MK. Those are fun. But what you're doing is effectively making the decision that we can't talk about anything outside of MK on the Xbox here. Because nobody goes to the other forums which makes the threads moved there pointless.
Again, I'm not saying Xbox is better or more important or any of that shit. I'm saying the threads made here are for the people here. Nothing more.

Ghost I agree with Chaos 100% there are a few points here. But before we even start with a conversation. Your attitude needs to go. We have already been down that route and it wasnt good for anyone. So let us have an adult conversation without having to deal with non-sense...you are a mod...act the part.
Anyway....
1. Bottom line is this...that thread is as good as dead. If it remained here there would be more communication.
2. Now I can understand moving my thread. But I dont understand moving the "trailer" thread. Afterall the point of thread was to direct it at a particular bunch of peeps. So was mine...but I falied to put it in there.
3. I can understand trying to make a large community...but your example with Chinatown was perfect. Why do places like Chinatown, Little Italy, etc exist. The reasons are because peeps get lost in large communities its only human nature to break it down to smaller ones. It gives more of a connection. Without connections to smaller communities things breakdown in the larger community...this has been shown repeatedly in history and sociology.
My idea is this. That threads should be moved unless requested by the author.

I've been fighting with this particular issue for a while now. It's understandable that both the XBL and PS2 forums have a tight-knitched community. They all play each other and know each other. We can all agree on that. However, when these forums were created they were created for the discussion of MK in relation to each system. With the obvious lack of a new Mortal Kombat game until '08 for either system it would be hard to keep both forums active enough with just Mortal Kombat topics. However general topics whether or not you want just the XBL community to respond belong in the General Discussion forum as that is it's purpose, for generalized topics. Just as XBL topics wouldn't be allowed in other forums.
All in all, I want to see both forums to continue to grow, but that growth has to be beneficial for the forum and MKO's overall community. Maybe it's better for everyone here to expand their horizons into other forums. There's a lot more going on than just XBL. How about right now we agree to disagree and I'll bring the issue up with Crow and Bishop and get their perspective. Until they have decided what they feel will be appropriate to keep the forums active, within their assigned topics, we'll have to continue to move any general discussion threads to the General Discussion forum.

To tie in that PR said and the above:
Really, threads in General Discussion get buried due to either initial or gowing disinterest in the topic itself. If there's enough people that have in interest in a particular thread, it'll stay viable on the first page for as long as it can. As much as you would prefer to have gerneral threads specifically for the XBox people here, as it was intended, the General Discussion Board facilitates that need for all general related topics for the site.
To pull back a bit -- as PR stated, if Crow or DAB feels that the XBox or PS2 Boards deserve special componsation in regards to general topics, that's fine. But for now, this is how it is.
