if those pics are meant to be proof that dc can be M rated, then why did boon say he is going for a hard teen rating...

To make it more marketable, I suspect.

Same reason the Alien vs. Predator movie was rated PG-13 even though all Alien movies and both Predator movies were rated R.

Wait so why does this have to be rated Teen if these comics are dark? :(

Because DC release several hundred comics every month to the direct market, and can appeal to a diverse range of demographics without significant financial risk.

Video games are a mass market currently skewing younger and younger as a new generation of gamers take control of the market share. For DC to maximise the advantage of a game, they want to appeal to the broadest range, including, potentially, the cartoon-wtching kids.

Also; everyone seems to have lost their head over the loss of fatalities. T for Teen still has a lot of room for silly violence, and Boon himself has acknowledged they're going to push the rating as far as it can go.
A spur of the moment reference would be something like Red Steel; rated T for Teen and packed full of swordary and gunplay on, of all systems, the zealously padded Nintendo Wii. Sony and Microsoft, as you can imagine, are bound to restrict the capacity of that ESRB rating even less.

And from Boon/MK team's perspective -- what's the point of crossing over with the more expansive DC franchise if you aren't appealing to the mass market? They might manage to get the MK back to the mainstream with something like this...

Fiction is, as fiction does.

The same could be said of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who just came up in another thread. They were originally designed to be very violent, too.

Right, but isn't it weird seeing Sub-Zero facing batman ?

I mean, Imagine, a kid seeing MK8 in a store, when he comes back home, he sees his childhood heroe being destroyed in a stage trap, head bursted etc...

What a fiction XD ! Oh wait.. din't boon said no blood and fatalitys ?

Given the mature themes of the comics (and even cartoons), a Batman fan is probably emotionally mature enough to deal with something as silly and cartooned as Mortal Kombat. Again, a lot of people are confusing the sensational immaturity of the MK brand with DC's typically psychological darkness.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero might as well have been Road Runner and Wile E Coyote...

The upcoming storyarc in Batman is "RIP" about the death of the character. A recent issue dealt with a near-death trip through Batman's psyche, recapping the failures that have been a key component of Batman's characterization, most prominently the recent deaths of two different Robin characters, as well as the villainous resurrection of one of those, who spent recent times killing and manipulating the criminal underworld of Gotham, (when he wasn't menacing Batman).

Contemporary references of the Joker, including the upcoming film, are also strong reference for the bridging of the two brands.
Another recent issue of Batman was an experimental throwback to the pulp era of magazines, featuring an entirely prose story detailing the Joker's "recovery" after having his face successfully reconstructed from a pointblank shotgun wound -- and his subsequent rampage through a hospital, and masochistic scarring of his own face to give birth to a new particularly murderous persona in his changing super-psyche.
This story also featured Silent Hill-esque CG artwork with the prose, exceptionally eerie (and dark) to look at.

The cartoons have dealt to varying degrees with the very mature undertones of many of Batman's villains who represent tragedy out of death, violence, or deep psychological trauma. Even the maligned The Batman series carries a very dark tone visually and conceptually with reinterpretations of characters.

And of course, to take the first line alone, "isn't it weird seeing Sub-Zero facing batman?" -- of course not!
I'm guessing some of you are unfamiliar with John Tobias' connection with comics, and the strong references and inspirations taken from the medium. MK suits comics very well because the underlying similarities are very broad and very real.

Don't let Malibu's shitty dealing with license fool you!
The limited reference and imagination of a bunch of twelve year olds getting off on exploding heads shouldn't confuse asthetic and design with creative diversity, and legitimately mature themes.

there is blood but not as much as it usually has. And no fatalities, cuz u cant really have superman rip someone spine out or something like that, so its finishers now, also i dont think the traps will be like that either unless they remove the traps.

No traps.. no fatalitys... you see what I meant ? my point is... compare Mortal kombat 3 to this.. MK3 is an old game and it appears more violent then this. Why must MK lose their Fatalitys for DC ? No stage traps ? Aow come on! wow

Oh....My....God....wow

Was all that subliminal "sexual" and "Gay-sexual" content pure coincidence? Or was it done on purpose?

I mean, was it Robin the guy Batman named "Dick"? Why did they sleep together?

There are some surprising/traumatizing pictures in there, lol.

Heh, clearly taken out of context.

They must not have been thinking 50/60 years ago of the alternatives people would gather from those images.

The asinine thing that I keep seeing on these boards is that the closed minded MK Kommunity cant grasp the fact that the Batman and Superman of the 50s and 60s are NOT the Batman and Superman in contemporary DC comics.

I just want to say that I think it is hilarious people are so torn over something they really have no idea about. It makes for a great read.

Any MK complaining about this has to open their eyes. Whoever created this thread is a smart person.

DC is dark...

I have been a DC and MK fan my whole life, and I have no problem with this game. I'm actually quite excited.

Over the passed 3 years...I've seen MK get corny and seen DC get darker...

Quit playing videogames and read some comics before you make bold judgements. Because you don't know what you are talking about, trust me.

:)

Batman is one of the darkest characters (with the darkest villains). Although he may not kill, it doesn't matter. He will break bones.

Just give it a shot, and quit being so closed-minded.
