What are "sprites"?

I was looking at that MKWarehouse site, and i was wondering, what exactly are "sprites"?

Sorry to ask a question that everyone else might know, but I just don't know much about computers and computer terminology.

a sprite is like a ripped image of a characters poses or whatever to make fake pics or add to sigs or whatever you want to do with them.
