If online play never kept track of wins or loses... would it be better?
Why I ask, is because no one would care if they lost or not. With the record system, people seem to worry about their record... and just play to get "on top"... by at any means they can... whether it's being hella cheap or using a cheat device.
Honestly, I could careless about my record. I'll pick random select, and I'll challenge about anyone... eerr... just not the people with the outragous records. OK ok... so I guess a record system can be good. It gives players a sense of whose equally good as you are... and shows whose cheap (with a really really, insane win streal). But on the other hand... if there wasn't a record there wouldn't be so many cheap people, would there be?
The bigger question though... is would online play be as popular? But hhmm. Just thought I'd bring this topic up. I honestly can't decide which would be better, but maybe online would be more fun if there wasn't a record system.

i myself enjoy ranking systems and profiles. it motivates competition and keeps you coming back, knowing you're accomplishing something that can be seen by other people.
however i think it needs to be more detailed. if you see a guy with 84 wins and 0 losses and a rank of 35, you'd probably want to know if he's a good player, or just a worthless cheeser/cheater. it should show the player's favorite used character and last used character on their profile.
i also think there should be the option of playing in a seperate, non-ranked environment for those who just want to casually fight and don't care how well they perform.

It doesn't really matter to me because last time I played Deception online, the Win/Loss record didn't work right.

i liked it because it told me how badly i sucked and that drove me to fight better so i like it it made me a better fighter and thats a good thing ( for me at least )

well..with people wiping thier memory cards whenever they take a loss...i would say record keeping is not a good thing, but at the same time I love the record keeping concept,I just wish it was like it was on the old XBAND system ....the top 10 list was wiped every week, and every week it was always interesting to go find out who was "this weeks" top 5,4 or 3...etc and you wouldnt see the same top players(cheaters with no losses) in the same spot every time you go and look....

I like the ranking system... That way I can ignore all the huge nerds who keep challenging my newbie ass. I mean... GOOD GOD, who the hell plays that much to have over 500 wins and like 30 losses? What the HELL kind of a life is that?
Last I checked I, and most people, want to win any game they play whether there is record keeping or not. I doubt it would be any different. Bo rai cho is the best on the game and so people will play him to win even if there isn't a ranking system. Even if BRC didn't have his combo other people have just as much "bs" as he does and it would be somebody else.
I think character profiles should be kept on a central harddrive. This would lessen the ability to delete your memory card, thus erase profiles. And I think something similar to a firewall should be placed in the game to prevent gameshark, or god knows what they use to cheat.
record is good, and even better if it could be used to examine your errors after your fight.

I'm with danadbab except I'd add a profile page that does show trhe win/losses your obtain mainly so you can see your own progression. Also, I would add a talley showing how many games you've won in a row regardless of who your fighing. The direct win/loss record will never really work as long as a player has the ability to turn the power with out a loss.
I know its a totally different game with a different feel but Dead or Alive Ultimate IMO has one of the best record systems, for a fighter, I have seen. Your rank runs off of points not wins/losses but you have the ability to see you your record or any person you select to see profile. It also keeps track of everyone you have fought in the past and gives you the ability to see your win/loss record with that person. It also runs through a room up to 8 people rather than only 1 on 1 which would be great for MK mini tournaments.
But even pushing all of that aside the absolute best part of the ranking system is the fact that if you lose, kill your connection, or power off the person you are fighting will gain your points and you will lose them. I don't play DOAU that often but out of the 500 or so matches I've played or seen, through the game rooms, I have never seen 1 person just disconnect during a fight. So there is a way to keep records and keep people active w/o disconnecting. It doesn't help for a cheezer but at least people wouldn't be so quick to pull the plug.

I think there should be a record system because it makes it more fun and challenging. Yes there will be some bad players but most I have played online have been 'honourable'.

sumtimes wen i fite people, my internet connection buggas and it says 'game session no longer available' and it counts as a disconnection, so i hav like 30 disconnects or summin and i think people reject a fite wenever they see it
I think you are delusional if you think that the only reason people play bo rai cho darrius dairou etc is because of the ranking. I have played home versions of marvel super heroes vs streetfighter and people only play wolverine+omega red. It didn't matter there was no ranking it didn't matter it was free they wanted to win so played the best team that had BS on the level of bo rai cho. I've played people on tekken 3 at home and they play nothing but law nina and yoshi who are the top 3 and equivalent of BRC/darrius/dairou. I've played marvel vs capcom at home nothing but double warmachine/striker warmachine/ red venom wolverine/ and strider wolverine. MVC2 combo's of sentinal storm magneto cable cammy and captain commando. What all these have in common is they are the top characters on the game. They all have things that put them far ahead of most of the characters and despite it being free and in a friendly situation people play them because they want to win. You can't say deception would be good if they got rid of this or that because they didn't they put it in the game so people would use it. The game is either good or bad and with the number of people who whine about throwing or BRC or 50/50 that leads me to believe the game would fall into the bad category. I got no problem losing to a BRC who does only f+3 and throw or a darrius who does 3 d,f3 and throw if I want to play I put up with that and there is no lack of honor in somebody wanting to and playing to win. For gods sake this is mortal kombat the whole idea of the game is to be cheap and kill people there is nothing honorable about it lol.
