and I also heard if you get close enough to the cells that they attack you...do any of the characters have specific attacks, or do they all just punch you or grab you the same way everytime?

Didn't they say characters switched randomly each time?

I don't think the cell characters have anything to do with storyline. I think it's all random.

This looks to be a pretty convincing "Sir not playable in this game list"

The models were created for Konquest obviously & you may see them in Konquest, but these are the non-Kombatants, unless anyone has a really good reason to refute that sentiment. Probability would make a great case that if there are 24 characters we know about & around 10-12 in the cages we've seen & none of them are playable, then these are the non-playable characters.

I think Jade is an anomaly because they originally didn't make her playable & brought her back.

Plus, there is historical precedent for this with Kano & Sonya in MK2.

We know this game is supposed to be like MK2, so it would make sense that the prisoners are the non-playables as they were in that game.

I'd say the prison cell is more akin to Sonya & Kano being bound up in MK2 than Smoke & Jade in the Forest Stage, as one set is free & one set is in jail.
