That's about the size of it. They're not in every game cause they suck the lemons off a tree.
but while we're talking about them I'd like to know why all of the original MK3 lineup have animalities where they turn into huge, glowing, animal spirit type... "things" when all the new ones in UMK3/MKT turn into tiny little semi-realistic creatures

Its almost like they thought the animalities were somewhat serious in MK3 and made them spirit type animals but then, afterwards, they realized how stupid they were and in UMK3 and Trilogy they decided to make them stupidly funny On Purpose. They had them for all the original MK3 characters so they probably felt obligated to make them for all the new chars too. If they had left them out people probably would have complained about that.

OK, seriously. If I remember right, I don't think the Animality thing started until MK2, when there were like, rumors of it or something.
