Mainly because...well...he's not human anymore! He started evolving/devolving and never stopped. He's now a gruesome beast.
The de-evolution idea is really cool. With most characters you know pretty much what they will look like in the next installment. With Reptile, you never know. His look really gives you something more to loook forward too.
And on a different note they probably just didn't want to have to make another model for him!
Or indeed have more than two ninja models!
But story wise, clearly because of his devolution thing, i like his sword, VERY nice!

It says in the Kontent section that the longer Reptile is away from his own people, the more he will de-evolve.

I like Reptile the way he is now, similar to the movie.
They couldn't just put his green ninja costume on him because he now has a tail and his head wouldn't fit into the mask.
My theory is: Because the game developers didn't make him that way.
I remembered another reason. Ed Boon and the rest of the MK Team decided to say NO to pallete swaps, and considering that Scorpion kept his outfit, and Sub-Zero has a reason for the current one, they would have to find a reason for a new outfit for Reptile. The problem is that Reptile isn't really a ninja, and since he is devolving/evolving to a more animalesque form, he really shouldn't be in that kind of suit. Also, he probably doesn't even fit in one anymore.
Btw, I vote that we start calling it evolution, rather than de-evolution, since he is getting more powerful (although his mind is one step after dumb). Ok, he's a little confuse, but considering that the animal side is taking over, that means his conscient/racional side is losing presence.
personally i think the whole evolution/de-evolution thing is stupid, why is he morphing? it's an interesting concept i guess but it doesnt really make sense...I think they should have either kept him in his ninja costume except for his fatality, kinda like in previous games but with a fully reptilian look, or made him a sub boss as a huge reptilian beast...well, maybe next game (considering his ending)
Also...why does Reptile have a human skull (ie. when you do his own or scorpion or sub zero's fatality on him)? shouldn't it be some kind of lzard skull? in fact a lot of people's skulls don't fit, like most of the female characters' skulls are way too big.
If he comes back in MK6 how much more de-evolving can be done?
How much more of a lizard can he get than now?
Hmm maybe he'll become a hatchling or something like that?

I think it would be interesting if he became like the lizard in the Mortal Kombat movie. He would be SUCH a different character then!!
