hey, does anybody use this does it work good can you actually play old arcade games and is it easy to download.Im wondering if its worth a download or is it just going to give my pc alot of problems.
I'm not sure if this discussion is allowed or not, but oh well. As long as you don't ask where to get roms...
Anyway, MAME is not prone to screw up your PC, at least I never had problems with it. It can be a bit difficult to figure out how to use if you're not at least mildly computer-literate, but make sure to read the readme either way.

I recommend it.
As far as using it goes, it's not too bad. What you need to do is find someone you talk to on AIM or Yahoo! Messanger or something that can walk you through it.
basically you download the program.
then you can download roms if you wish. only download ones you own
Roms come in ZIP format, save these zipped roms to your C:\mame\roms file. All your zip files of games should be in there.
Load up Mame, click on 'Available Games' and wait for it to load up all your games. Then enjoy.
Multiplayer is the same, only you go to 'network game' and join a room, and you can play anyone that has the same rom as you. There are many versions of each game, so you have to match exactly.
It's not hard at all really, like said above, you just have to not be computer challenged.

Very well said. That's pretty much all the walkthrough he would need. Only thing is if he wants to play online/network games, he needs to download mame32k, not just regular mame. I would suggest the .64 version tho as that is what most people run cuz if you dont you will get the dreaded 'incompatible versions, desynch may occur'.

Clicking on "Available Games" will only work if you have MAME32, I don't think the official distribution of MAME has anything you can click on. MAME32 works just as well though.

The DOS / Win32 versions are command-line based, so there's nothing to click. It's all command prompt. Frontends for it are different and can include clickable items or just plain text depending on the frontent. MAME32 is the main one with an interface.
And MAME doesn't screw up PC's, unless you have a very unique system that has a small difference that could cause anything. The games however, are a different story. If you have a slow PC, a lot more games will tend to run like total crap (extremely slow speed for example).

Yes they are all excellent. They are the exact game that was in the arcade. You can even go into the testmenu in some of them and change the settings, volume, etc.

^^Exactly what he said. If you dont have the parent, the clones wont run.
foahchon Wrote: Make sure they're in MAME's \roms subfolder. Also, make sure you have the files from mk2.zip, other versions of MK2 will not run without mk2.zip, since it is the parent rom. |
