- Neill Blomkamp posts concept art for defunct Alien sequel

Neill Blomkamp has posted a tantalising look at some unused concept art for the now-defunct Alien 5, with the director revealing he had been working on the project in some capacity.

“Was working on this," posted Blomkamp, alongside the imagery. “Don't think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph.”

Designed by artist Geoffroy Thoorens, it’s pretty awesome stuff, and has us convinced that Blomkamp would have been an inspired choice to pick up the baton on the long-running franchise.

Pretty interesting!

Niiice. It was good while it lasted. They already got far with the alien in space idea, so many times after the first movie.

- The Only Thing Stopping Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Movie is Neill Blomkamp

Speaking with Uproxx, the director discussed the genesis of the project. “Speaking to Sigourney Weaver, when we were doing Chappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head — I had come up with an idea that didn’t have Sigourney, it was a different idea,” Blomkamp says. “But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting. When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn’t needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.”

That’s all well and good, but the question is: what’s Fox’s take on all this? They’ve been actively developing a sequel to Prometheus – and they wanted that film to distance itself from the franchise — so are they already considering rebooting the series with a hardcore Alien picture? According to Blomkamp, they’re very interested. “I’m the problem,” the director responds, when asked if the film could actually come to fruition. “Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.”

The plot - it does thicken!

20th Century Fox has closed a deal with director Neill Blomkamp to develop a new “Alien” movie.

Wow! [Pleased it doesn't derail Prometheus sequel plans, too!]

Neil Blomkamp is becoming one of my favorite Sci-fi directors. I loved District 9, I thought Elysium was pretty cool, and I'm looking forward to Chappie in a few weeks. The fact that he's actually doing an Alien movie as his next film makes me very interested.

- Blomkamp‘s Alien Movie Will Ignore Alien 3 and Resurrection

Neill Blomkamp's upcoming Alien movie will carry on Ellen Ripley's story from James Cameron's Aliens, and ignore the sequels that came later.

In an interview with Sky News (during a promotional tour for Blomkamp's upcoming sci-fi flick Chappie), Blomkamp and Sigourney Weaver revealed that they intend to give Ripley a "proper finish" - one the pair don't think was achieved in Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection.

"I want this film to feel like it's literally the genetic sibling of Aliens," said Blomkamp. "So it's Alien, Aliens, and then this movie".

"I would love to take Ripley out of orbiting around in space, and give a proper finish to her story", said Weaver.

- Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel won’t undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection

Blomkamp had previously described his film as “the genetic sibling of Aliens”, saying “it’s Alien, Aliens and then this film”. However, that’s not to say he’s rejecting the next two films as part of the official canon...

“My favourites are the first two movies,” says Blomkamp to AlloCine. “So I want to make a film that’s connected to Alien and Aliens. That’s my goal. I’m not trying to undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection, I just want it to be connected to Alien and Aliens.”

- ‘Alien’: Michael Biehn May Reprise as Corporal Hicks in Neill Blomkamp’s New FIlm

The video game Aliens: Colonial Marines (released in 2013) actually ret-cons Hicks’ apparent death in Alien 3, so there’s already a precedent for the character still being alive during (and after) the events of the third Alien film installment. Blomkamp spoke with Digital Spy to promote Chappie, and Biehn’s inclusion in the film was one of the topics covered. Blomkamp was brief on any confirmations, saying simply that “hopefully” audiences will see Weaver and Biehn team up again.

In addition to Blomkamp’s wishful thinking, Biehn has supposedly chimed in on his potential involvement with the new Alien film. Reddit user Sskywarpe was able to ask the actor a couple of questions while Biehn attended Pensacola Comic-Con over the weekend, which of course dealt with the newly-announced sequel. According to the source, Biehn “smiled and said ‘Yes’” when asked if he had been contacted about the project, and exclaimed “Looks like it!” in response to whether or not he’d be up for it.

Lots more in the article, but the thrust is speculation fuelled by the (previously posted) concept art. If, like me, you were pleased to hear Alien 3 would remain in tact, but curious how Hicks could still be involved, this part of the video game plot is useful [via Wikipedia]:

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
Stone and Turk manage to arrive at the cryostasis section of the Sulaco, where they find Rebecca "Newt" Jorden, Ellen Ripley and Dwayne Hicks sleeping. While awakening, Corporal Hicks watches a facehugger already attached to Ripley's face. Three Weyland-Yutani PMCs enter the area and during the fight one of the corporates fires his weapon and grazes Ripley's facehugger, which bursts acidic blood that burns both her cryotube and the floor, causing an electrical fire and activating the ship's alarm. During the alarm Turk is knocked unconscious by one of the PMCs, who throws him inside Hicks's cryotube. It closes immediately and is ejected out of cryostasis by the ship's computer, along with Newt and Ripley's cryotubes, sending them to Fury 161 inside an EEV. After killing the remaining PMCs and fighting several xenomorphs inside the vessel, Stone and Hicks escape the Sulaco using a service skiff craft and set course to Fury 161 to rescue Turk, Newt and Ripley, taking them two days to finally arrive. They both witness Ripley's death after she throws herself into a molten pit and are captured by Michael Weyland and several PMCs, who take them back to LV-426 in the still infested Sulaco.

- Sigourney Weaver Promises Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ Film Will ‘Break New Ground’

Sigourney Weaver promises that the “Alien” franchise is in good hands with “District 9′′ director Neill Blomkamp, and she’s looking forward to returning to her signature role of Ellen Ripley in a new installment in the science-fiction series.

“I can’t think of a better director,” Weaver told Variety at the New York City premiere of Blomkamp’s latest film, “Chappie.” “He’s a real fan. I think he’ll be true to the world and take it in unexpected directions. It’s got a lot of sinew in it. It will certainly stand up to the others and probably break a lot of new ground as well.”

“Suddenly it seemed so obvious that this would happen,” said Weaver. “We’ve been in touch the last year, and he’s shared wonderful artwork.”

More in the article. Nothing much, but y'know. Positive endorsement.

Awesome! So are they making Alien and Prometheus two different continuations? Or will the events of the Prometheus series eventually work up to the Alien series?

Glad we are getting another Alien though, one of my favorite movie series as a kid.

- Michael Biehn Confirms He’ll Return For Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ Film

“It’s official, I will be reprising my role as ‘Cpl.’ (Not for long ...) Dwayne Hicks,” Biehn wrote in a newly discovered Instagram post. “With the go ahead, Hicks will return with Ripley in Mid 2017. Perhaps Hicks and Ripley well eventually get to second base in this one ...”

Also remembered for his roles in “The Terminator,” “The Abyss” and “Tombstone,” Biehn co-starred in 1986’s “Aliens” as the steely Colonial Marine, who’s dead by the beginning of “Alien 3.” A battle-scarred Hicks is featured prominently alongside Ripley in Blomkamp’s early concept art, prompting Biehn to comment, “Damn someone forgot to tell these two to hit the ageing cream.”

Prometheus is a pseudo-prequel, so it was always removed and designed to go off in its own direction. The word is Prometheus could continue as its own series unaffected by Alien 5, so that's pretty cool. (Would be cooler if Ridley Scott were a lock, though).

- Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 Won't 'Tread On The Toes' Of Prometheus 2

In the new issue of Empire - on shelves this Thursday, March 26 - Neill Blomkamp talks a little bit more about his plans for his new Alien movie, which won't, in his words, "tread on the toes" of franchise godfather Ridley Scott's upcoming Prometheus 2.

"I changed the one thing [Scott] felt was bumping Prometheus a little bit," reveals Blomkamp. "One thing that makes me feel good about it is that Ridley is producing it. He likes the idea of what I want to make."

On top of this tantalising titbit, there was another intriguing aside from the South African sci-fi maven: Alien 5, as you might want to call it, will most likely not be called Alien 5.

"I sent the title I wanted to Ridley," says Blomkamp. "It's kinda quite bold, but it gives away too much if I say the title. But in the event that it doesn't work, I'm dead in the water...". What on earth - or, of course, what not on Earth - could it be? Leave your conjecture in the comment box below.

For more details, be sure to listen to Blomkamp's recent interview on the Empire Podcast....

I love the first 3 films in the Alien franchise, Ressurrection however was one of the worst films ever made in my opinion.

I wonder what they will do to bring Hicks and Ripley back, will they say that Alien 3 and Ressurrection were just a dream? Or they will keep the ideia of clones from Ressurrection? I definetly hope they don't even mention Ressurrection.

The first two Alien filmes are great, the first one was really scary at the time, nearly all horror movies today follow what it did. Aliens is a great action movie, up there with Terminator 2 among the best action movies ever made.

Alien 3 is one of the most underrated movies of all time, it had the best acting in the franchise, and Sigourney Weaver was at her best, I also liked how dark it was, the characters were very interesting too.

Anyway, I hope this one can save the franchise.

- Is ‘Prometheus’ Holding Up Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’? (Exclusive)

While Twentieth Century Fox is still hot on the project, our sources tell us that they’re being forced to hold off until after Ridley Scott gets into production on his long-gestured Prometheus sequel. This means a lengthy development process for Blomkamp’s Alien, and a potential release in 2018.

“Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea,” our regular tipster tells us. “Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.”

Blomkamp will continue to slowly prep Alien 5 while Scott goes off and makes Prometheus 2 early next year.

But there’s an even larger roadblock that’s being avoided by the feet dragging. Our insider says the “delay” will allow Blomkamp more time to develop his project and afford him the ability to work around any scheduling issues that may arise in reference to Sigourney Weaver’s involvement with James Cameron’s Avatar sequels.

If all goes well, Blomkamp will likely shoot Alien 5 sometime in 2017, ahead of a release the following year. So that gives fans a one-two punch of Scott’s Prometheus 2 in 2017 and Blomkamp’s own Alien film in 2018.

The tangle continues~! Can't say I mind. Probably more honestly interested in a Scott directed Prometheus sequel than Blomkamp on Alien 5.

- Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Prequel Officially Shelved

In news that will be a relief to some and disappointment to others, Neill Blomkamp has taken to Twitter to confirm that his Alien sequel will be put on hold indefinitely. Unfortunately the tweet doesn’t give many details aside from the fact that the project will now be shelved pending Ridley Scott’s Prometheus 2 (now titled Alien: Paradise Lost) and that the District 9 director will shift his attention to other projects.

From the ICYMI file. There's temptation to read into it, but it could still go a lot of different ways.
Even calling it "shelved" feels like editorializing. The tweet was much milder and in sync with what we already know: Scott and Prometheus are the master elements. Which also isn't to say Blomkamp won't be squeezed out, fatigue, quit, get replaced, become victim to self-fulfilling prophecy, etc. I just think it's a little premature to lean that way.
