So my girlfriend and I were walking through the Woodland Mall here in Grand Rapids and this kid approaches us selling tickets for his band at the Intersection.

Im a bit apprehensive because he's about 17 and looks a bit too mainstream for my tastes, but says he plays metal and promises a good show. So I take a chance.

I was highly impressed, but when I'm at a concert sometimes I get caught up in the moment and I think that bands are better than they actually are. However I put the CD in yesterday and these guys sound as awesome on the album as they did live.

The star of the show is the lead guitarist, considering he's only 17 and sounds like a seasoned professional. Perhaps the new generation will save us from the shitfest that is current music.

Anyway Ive done the build up:

That sounds pretty decent. I agree with you that the lead guitarist is great. Sounds really fresh and the solos are wicked awesome. It's nice to see people supporting local metal bands.

Since we're on the topic, here's the page to my friends band. He plays Death Metal and is the lead guitarist. Well, he quit actually about a year ago (I think he's focusing on classical music more now.) Anyways, check out Shrieks of the Impaled.

I really like the vocals. The singer has a great voice imo, it goes great with the guitar. Good shit, great find. I'll probably listen to these songs for a little while.

I can't take music like this seriously. Absolutely nothing remarkable about it, if you ask me.

Todays Music goes in 3 categories:

1. Completely sucks
2. Terrible remake of great song
3. Decent but not rivaling anything great like the Beatles, Zepplin, Nirvana, Hendrix.

When was the last time you heard something and said "This is absolutely great and people will talk about it 30years from now." I haven't heard anything like that.

What, you think people will be talking about Tribune 30 years from now? You can't compare anything to the fucking Beatles or Zeppelin; pioneers are pioneers. I don't get how you can be so impressed by this local band and seemingly forget that there's a whole world of real independent music out there.

Like I said, just open your ears. And mind.

No I dont think they will be that big, but I do think its a step in the right direction.

What I mean is that in 60's the Beatles delivered a style of music that virtually everyone liked, and its music that remains relevant today. In the 70's we got Led Zepplin who again changed the face of music and was well recieved by everyone. The 80's introduced us to Metallica and in the 90's Nirvana gave us grunge rock. These bands will go down in history as pioneers of their time and relotionizing the concept of what music can be and soundlike.

I haven't heard a band since Nirvana that I think will be even remotely relevant in the years to come. I cant think of anyone in the 2000-2010 decade to have that level of impact. Everything sounds to me like the same recycled garbage or someone actually trying to be artistic but failing horribly at it.

What I hear in tribune and what I saw in crowd reaction was an appreciation for real instrumentation and something more thought provoking lyrically than the likes of Nikki Minaj and Lil Wayne. (I am not saying these guys are great lyricists, but certainly more artistic than the majority of the radio). So they gave me some hope.

Im still searching for the band that makes me feel the way I did when I was much younger and heard the iconic Sabbath "Ironman" Riff. Or the opening powerchords to "Smells like teen spirit." or possibly the deep sense of meaning I get when I listen the Grateful Dead or Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven."

Tribune is not that band, but for a group of high school kids they rock damn hard. I do think that guitar player could go places if someone big discovers him.

I love Metal to death, but the most recent band that I actually bought a CD was OTEP and they are old by now. That CD didnt get near as much playtime as my Number of the Beast, Master of Reality, or even Toxicity either.

I havent heard anything current that really impacted me.

Search for more independent artists, or local bands.

Fantastic local "grunge" band from my town.
