Any of you guys listen to Tom Waits?

I started getting into him about two years ago. "Rain Dogs" is the first album of his I ever got and I think it's still my favorite. Lately I've been working my way through his other Island Records material. Right now I'm on "Bone Machine."

I've only listened to a little of his pre-"Blue Valentine" stuff. It's good, but obviously very different. I'm more of a fan of his '80s work so far. That and post "Mule Variations" I think are my two favorite eras of his music.

Anyway, just wanted to gauge interest and see if anyone else is a fan. Let's discuss Tom Waits' music!

YEEEESSSSS!!!!!

I love the fuck out of Tom Waits! A couple of years ago, I was starting to burn out on metal and started listening to a lot of jazz and blues. That was a great and all, but it didn't solve the problem. I needed a break from contemporary music.

I stumbled onto Sword Fish Trombone, and he's been one of my favorite artists ever since. Rain Dogs is my favorite album, however. I don't know what I would do without the guy. After years and years and years of solos, riffs, and complex arrangements, there was something renewing about the simple melodies and early 20th century styles of Tom waits. His music can bring me to tears. God bless Tom Waits.
On another note, I haven't seen you here in forever, GrotesquetheBeast. How have ya been?

Interesting you mention you got into Waits after being into Metal. At the time I got into him, I had just come off a very long period of listening almost exclusively to Punk Rock. I do enjoy the simple arrangements and melding of several musical genres. There is something refreshing about it for sure.

I got Swordfishtrombone a couple months back, and I think the title track is easily one of my favorite songs of all time. So moody. The thing about that album, and Rain Dogs especially, is how evocative the music is.

If you've ever seen the film Down By Law, Tom Waits in one of the stars, and Rain Dogs is used a lot in the soundtrack.

And I've been doing alright. Just stopped by and decided to see if my old password was working. Before I knew it I was interacting with the community again. Totally un-planned for.
