I thought Family Guy drew inspiration from All In the Family? Peter and Lois have always seemed more Archie and Edith to me.
Anyway a re-booted Flintstones would still be a kids show and not simply Family Guy 2: The Stone Age. McFarlane is likely wanting to branch out and do something different than the adult humor found in Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show (which is terribad).
