I do think horror directors screw themselves over in the 80's with too many good horror movies.
I mean the quality of horror in the 80's was well done for its era and we horror fans are bored with all of the current horror movies because they rehashing older horror story ideas.
a good Horror story is not about the body count it is in the plotline.
A good Terror story is in the body count.

true but most of ur freaky plot lines that really scare people cant be played out in a PG-13 environment... i like body counts but can do without them but knowing an Exorcist movie is rated PG-13 means u wont have most of the stuff that made the original famous...

Trends are changing. For example, M. Night usually doesn't show his 'boogeymen' off, for the most part he lets you put the fear in yourself. You imagine what the creatures look like, which is kinda interesting..
To answer ur question, I'm not sure. As a society, we may have become blind to what once was considered 'gore'. Now directors must go over the top with effects and blood, and at the same time not keep it cheesy, which I'm sure is a tough balance...
Hey look at this way man, Saw and Devils Rejects will be here soon enough ;)

btw that is why we have rated R movies.
any good rated R movies should be a Rated R.
I am a firm believer in plotline over body count for all Rated R movies.
a horror movie should be aim at Adults and not teenagers.

Here's a theory:
Horror movies these days suck for plenty of reasons.
-Being original and creative in Hollywood has become a taboo. Out of the past 5 years how many Blockbusters were original stories? It's like everything under the sun has been revamped at least 6 or 7 times.
-All of the best writers and directors are always the indy people. But big named studios are always looking for a familiar name, and the same goes for a large majority of the American audience.
-It's true that some of the best horror movies were made from the years '72-'92, but I have an explination for that too. It was around that time that time that a break was made in horror. Prior to that time period horror movies revolved around the "classic creature features". We became tired of seeing Dracula, The Mummy, The Frankenstien monster, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc. Plus with the 70's came the time when experimentation was the in thing. We got Alien, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exocist, Jaws; and people were blown away by this new breed of horror. Who cared if they were good or not, people we're happy with the new stuff.
-In the time period listed above horror sequals were still a new thing. Back then these flicks were planned to get sequal, they were made simply to stand on their own. It's when they got sequals that they went from having a cult fanbase, to a mainstream fanbase.
-Flash foward to the 80's, the decade of blood. Ohh I miss those days. A time when every kill was cool, even if it wasn't over the top. Granted, sometimes the story took a back seat to the blood, but the good ones always stayed on the path.
-But with the 80's and the sequals is when horror started it's downfall. It seemed as though there was a different staff working on every sequal. Everyone wanted to put their own spin on everything, that they ruined it. It's the old "Too many cooks" premise. There were only a handfull of guys like Clive Baker and Wes Craven, and dime a dozen imatations.
-Now here we are in 2004, longing for movies from a time period that we won't ever live through again. Being experimental is long and gone; in it's place is marketing. Let's face it, movies get half their money from posters, trailers, tv spots, toys, games and soundtracks. The possibility of the movie being great doesn't matter anyway, it's as long as the studio at least breaks even. Besides it's not like horror movies are as high on the platform as they used to be. They've regressed back to being cult classics, so they best way to make money is to try and broaden the audience to their best abilities. Hence the PG-13 ratings.
Let's face it Ghalster, movies are just like music these days. Disposable. I would have liked a good Freddy vs Jason, AVP, and new Exorcist. But in the back of my mind, I knew all were going to suck(we have yet to see with Exocist, but I bet I'm not far off).

True Blade there r some guarenteed classics yet to come out this year, but its still disappointing that this one had to be one of the let downs...
and SOS hell of a post, i agree 100%, especially about movies and music these days being disposible...
but really when u think about it Exorcist the begining was doomed from the start, the first director died, his script was locked away, so in comes a new director, new script, its finished but deemed to boring so its canned, then comes the third director and another script and this time its coming out, but it has been confirmed that both finished versions will be on DVD, but the original one which was not completed due to the death will probably never be seen due to being locked aways...

btw, on a OT note, in a recent interview with Paul Anderson he said that they had to give AVP a PG-13 rating because all the gore scenes hadnt been edited in time for the release and the reason he changed the plot was to make it his own... when will people learn not to fuck with original story lines hence the dark horse comic series...

Exorsist being PG-13 scares me. I might go see it tomarrow. It BETTER at least be decent-good. I'am not expecting it to be better than the orginal Exorcist thats for sure.

Yeah the movie is R, and mostly for the gore, this movie is very gory and that aint good for an exorcist film.
As I said in my other post:
have been waiting for SO LONG for this film, from schrader to renny! I am a huge exorcist fan.
I was very dissapointed to see the reviews.
there are alot at captainhowdy.com/fanforum
I must see this myself but since im in Australia it dont come out till november.
I hope I like it, I think i will.
It seems like the problem with this movie is the cheesy exorcism (the possessed person, and i wont say who that is,even chases merrin through a tunnel, sarcasm/wow scary/sarcasm)and the bad CGI.
DAMN YOU MORGAN CREEK/RENNY HARLIN!
I have read schraders novel and its not too bad, it seems renny's novel is good too, but the film is bad.
urg!

That's the main reason I'm looking forward to this movie. I think it'll be interesting to see two different versions of the same film by two different directors.
