So anyone playing this? I picked this up for the PS3 and have been enjoying it a good bit. It's definitely not what I expected...in a good way

Anyway if anyone on PSN wants to mow down some beach zombies I'm down.

Is it your standard FPS? Aside from on here, I haven't heard anything about it.

I went into it expecting some sort of Left 4 Dead arcade-esque clone and it's nothing like that. A more accurate comparison would be, gameplay mechanic wise, is a cross between Fallout and Borderlands. If we're talking genre , at it's heart Dead Island is a First-Person/Survival Horror/Action RPG (I know that sounds confusing). I'll give you a rundown:

- Open world FPS with a giant persistent world. (Again think Fallout)

- Long story mode filled with sidequests and a linear chapter based story.
Completed sandbox style. (Fallout, Oblivion, Borderlands, etc)

- Class based characters each specializing in different areas of support and combat (Think Borderlands).

- Experience and leveling system governs skill trees (Again Borderlands...or any RPG really)

- Intricate crafting system based on collecting salvage, and finding mod blueprints. An example is the "Ripper" dlc which consists of a baseball bat (base weapon), wiring, a large battery, circular saw blade, duct tape, and electrical scraps (all salvage).

- HEAVILY melee focused combat (with some nice mechanics) as the premise involves a sudden zombie infestation at a tropical resort island so access to guns is sparse whereas blunt and edged weapons are more common. When guns are found they need to be used conservatively with attention to ammo management (Think old Resident Evil).

- Strong emphasis to multiplayer as you can form a 4 party team from an Online Lobby and play through the campaign together. Also, when you're near another player that is close to your experience level and story progression, the game will allow you the option to join up.

So thats a general rundown.

I've only seen Dopefish's video of the accidentally leaked Dev version and it made me laugh, nuff said. I'm expecting the real game to be not-that-glitchy, and since it already looked fun as a dev version, it should be fun as a finished game.

Some people actually say that the dev version wasn't an accident, but a rushed decision since the game really hasn't gone gold yet, and it had a deadline. Would it be true?

..nah, they wouldn't do "the Death Cargo".

Looks pretty much identical to Dead Rising to me, which got old extremely fast.

I don't know how to explain it right....but ya, just overall wasn't what i expected.....i don't like the controls for instance, and the fact that my weapons break pretty fast...and I don't like the driving ...that shit sucks. among many more things......

I'm interested, but, alas, I spent my money recently on Deus Ex instead... and, honestly, I'm not enjoying Deus Ex as much as I was led to believe I would.

I own Dead Island, I have to say it is a rental. Its a good game, but it gets old fast. Here are some of the problems I have with the game.

- The co-op doesn't work, out of the box. Well it does work, but 80% of the time it doesn't work. Most of the time the server browser doesn't allow anyone to join someone elses game. Fact, this game isn't fun without co-op partners. Some people say that there will be a patch soon to fix co-op soon. It is fun , when you find three people to play with.

- Not enough quick travel spots. This game has a little too much walking on foot missions that could take minutes to get too.

- The way point system doesn't always work. This wouldn't matter, but when you have to walk for 10 minutes only to find out that the way point goes through a rock is very upsetting.

- Lack of varity in enemies.

- Unfair enemies - It can take 2-4 hits to kill you. The infected zombies are annoying.

Dead Island is the first game I've purchase in over a year. I was a bit eager, so I bought into the cool zombie game thing. I might trade it in for store credit for Mass Effect 3.

Most games these days are overpriced and not worth it. It's either that or rehashes of old games(MK2011).

I'll give you the janky save and co-op issues (which do really need fixed...ASAP) but the rest of what you listed...well...I definitely disagree.

-First off, you can drive to a lot of those missions you mentioned (or at least near them) and half of the fun of an open world sandbox game is to explore. The game rewards that with lush scenic (and hidden) environments as well as providing crazy amounts of loot and sidequests.

- Enemy variety picks up the further you get into the game with the Butcher, Rams, Floaters, and Suicider in additon to the grunt level Infected and Walkers. You also encounter human enemies as well.

- The Thug zombies types (the ones you mentioned killing you in a few hits) are designed to be slow-moving powerhouses which is why they drop nice loot and xp bonuses. Have you tried going for their arms first to amputate/break them? You have to go all Muhammad Ali on them to bait out their wild haymakers and then counter attack an arm (or body/head if you're brave).

- Further, the Infected again are designed to be the fast-moving "28 Days Later" (or Left 4 Dead) type of zombies to add complexity to triggered encounters and roving zombies. They make for intense fights when paired up with the slow shambling Walkers . Kick is your friend.

- As for the Waymarker, I haven't had the breadcrumb trail lead me to a dead end yet. Sometimes it'll take you the long way around sure but it'll definitely get you there.

Despite some critical issues with saves and co-op (that the Dev's intend to patch), this game is a lot of fun solo and even moreso with friends.

I feel ya on the Skyrim. Arkham City I can wait a bit untill the price drops but I have no doubt I will love it.

Gears of War 3 and Battlefield 3 will both be first day purchases for me though.

Got into an argument with a mate about this.

His argument was that because of "THAT" trailer for it, the game will be good. I said it looks like arse and will nothing like the trailer. And then he sulks.

Not interested in it. I really hated Boringlands and I already have Left 4 Dead. Sorted.

Getting Gears 3, Arkham City though. Might even get F1 2011, Sonic Generations, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Deus Ex and Halo remake as well.

Too many games.

I'm with you for Arkham City but I have zero faith in Skyrim. I'd rather slam my dick in a car door than play Oblivion.

Heh, didn't think people wouldn't like that game.

So basically this game isn't a game you want to buy immediately since I'm reading a lot of comments that says it's an okay game but it's not as great as it was meant to be.

Weird, it looked really cool but if it's not that great I think you guys just saved me money when I go video game shopping.

The gameplay itself is fine it's just that it launched with some critical bugs and glitches that really are staggering. You could just rent it at a Redbox before you make a decision.

yeah

the game is a port, and a rental. but people who aren't getting this on PC should have to worries about the port part.

once you reach the city, it gets a LOT better.

I have a couple of questions about Dead Island:

1. Does this game have a day/night cycle, like say you keep the game unpaused an' wander around, will the time of day change gradually?

2. Does this game have a human needs kind of system, like you need to eat and sleep to increase your chances against the relentless zombies?

No to both actually. No ongoing day/night system and no "human needs". Food and some drink items refill health but they aren't related to any sort of hunger/thirst system like you'd see in an old school text based MUD or something.
