I always used to play DOA4 on the 360, so i'm definitely going to get this. It looks badass.

I always used to love the DOA series, I was so mad when it turned into an Xbox exclusive, I missed out on DOA3 and 4, but the fact that it's returning to both systems is an amazing and smart move by the team and a huge win for everyonegrinsmile

I own all the games... I just hope the computer is nowhere near as cheap as before.

Seriously, at least with Shao Kahn you can spam him to death. I curse the soul of the man that came up with Alpha-152 and that dreaded spin-kick of death.

For a pre alpha build that looks fucking pretty. And for a final product too.

Looks like they toned done the plastic-ness of the characters.

Also - even Mortal Kombat characters would think twice before fighting on top of a construction site. tongue

I like DOA but its always played 4th fiddle to the Sega and Namco games.

No Tina - No Buy.

looks awesome!!! I was hoping they'd make a 5th entry for a couple years now. I just wish they don't keep the hit cloud in. it cheapens the presentation imo. but I LOVE the DOA series. been playing since 96!

I love Dead or Alive, and I was sad that after 4 came out, they said that they had no plans to make a new one because they had all ready created the perfect fighting game. Well years later, yay time for a new entry.

It was beautiful watching those two fight, I'd forgotten what it was like to see a fighting game on a 3D plane.

Lei Fang where you at? grin

First of all, it's Hayate, not Ein.

And there isn't really only one star of each game. It's usually all of the ninjas plus a couple more characters.

Like in DOA2, it was Hayabusa, Ein, and Kasumi
In DOA3 it was Ayane, Hayate, Kasumi, Hayabusa
In DOA4 it was Helena, Kasumi, the rest of the ninjas, Christie

It always changes, but the ninjas are a repeating factor.

I'm surprised I've never played a DoA game before since I'm a fan of the Ninja Gaiden series . Does it play out like other 3D fighters (Tekken, Virtua Fighter)?

sorry about that Hayate and ein have similar costumes in doa ultimate 2 so i got them mixed up.

mojo - the dead or alive games are similar to tekken but is alot faster. it has alot of strategic elements like multi stages and countering. moves can change if ceilings and wall are to low. there's lots of cool stuff with the doa games.

i myself own doa ultimate 1 and 2 on the x-box and i own doa 3 for x-box.

mojo you should def play it. lots of attires to unlock. give it a try.

It plays not so much like tekken. More fluid, better paper rock scissors. It's hard to find a fair comparison.

Block, Kick, Punch 8 directions plus extra special moves etc. (And yes all four of those can be used in the directions to do something) Grabs, Counters, Parries, launch attacks, dive attacks... SO MUCH.

Just watch someone on youtube play a tutorial for a character. Then there's chaining SO MUCH CHAINING.

I need to break out my drunken fist, my mariposa, and just plain break out doa4. Need to train.

Also to all those haters: Alpha-152 wasn't that hard on Normal Mode.

Kind of in a nutshell, but from when I played DOA2(which was my last game in the series) they had a really cool countering system(reminds me of Soul Calibur, but it's hand to hand) included as well and many times they had interactive levels it where you can knock people through various areas of the arena( like MK Deception).

It plays like a lot of mainsteam fighters, but with its own unique traits too. When I played DOA2, I was younger so I never got into the fighting mechanics heavily, so I dunno how deep it is, but it seems pretty strategic, simply with the countering system.

The tag modes are really cool too, they usually have team intros and win poses(I love those) and the team combos are a ton of fun too.

For the most part. I felt a lot of DOA essence when I played Tekken.

DOA is like this triangle system where blows beat throws, throws beat reversals, and reversals beat blows.

Pretty much just a game of rock, paper, scissors.

The Blows include punches and kicks which can be high, medium, low.
Some blows launch, stun, guard crush, etc.
Guarding high works against highs and mids, and guarding low works against highs and lows.

The throws are primary for massive damage. Some launch and you can do ground okis. Normally throws require setting up your opponent to attempt to reverse your blow, and you grab them to do killer damage.

Reversals are basically reacting to a strike at the right time and pressing a button to counter it. In the past couple DOA games, you had a high punch/kick counter, low punch/kick counter, a mid punch counter, and a mid kick counter. successfully pulling off a counter will lead to an animation that does full damage, or might just launch or stun them for a combo.
Unlike most fighters, you can do a reversal while in stun, so ground combos in this game are never really guaranteed.

While most fighters have normal hit and counter hit, DOA has normal hit, counter hit, and HIGH counter hit.
HIGH counter hits occur when your rock beats out their scissors (in other words, they would attempt a reversal, and you grab them, etc.)

For blows, you get normal for pulling an attack off on an immobile opponent, a counter attack for beating out their blow quicker or using a move that dodges theirs, and a high counter

For reversals, the quicker you react to their attack, the higher the counter will be.

for throws, I'm not entirely sure I remember how to get a counter throw. I don't think it's even possible to be honest... or at least I can't remember.

Honestly, that's DOA basics in a nutshell.

Oh yeah, side-stepping moves do not side step :troll face:

Thanks for the breakdown guys. It does sound like it has some interesting mechanics going on that I could get into. I've tryed Tekken and Virtua Fighter and didn't really care for the series after a while although I enjoyed Soul Calibur.

My biggest difficulty with a lot of the fighting genre is that I have a difficult time getting interested in their characters. I think it's a bit of a cultural difference in that the Eastern Anime art style and approach to character design just puts me off (Especially with women and child characters.) So you can have this widely popular franchise with deep, rich gameplay mechanics but the character design and execution just leaves me disinterested (Capcom games for example).

I'll keep an eye on DoA 5's development though. Thanks for the heads up.

MyQueenSindel to counter a throw you push the grapple button the same time as the opponnet in the opposite direction of your opponnet. so if your on the right side your press the direction backwards instead of forwards along with the counter button. it only does small damage and is more like a parry than anything.

hope that helps.

Really? that sounds so random lol

Geez it's been so long since I've played DOA4 legitimately.

When Xbox 360 came out, that was the first fighter to be available. And it wasn't until mid-2008 that the next (enjoyable) fighter was released.

Imagine that, 2 and a half years on the same game, day in and day out. Mind you I did play some other games occasionally like Saints Row and UMK3, but those are blips in time compared to my DOA4 time.

Even when I go on the game I still practically play like I had just left. In fact, just last June I got the 100 wins in survival, 4 years after my last DOA4 achievement!

But yeah, even though I prefer 2D fighters, and deeper gameplay now with more challenges, DOA has a special place for me.

PLUS I played DOA4 in 2006 and 2007 mostly, when it was so much easier to make friends online. Maybe it's just me, but I honestly haven't made a good friend in quite a while. There's the occasional adding someone because you played good matches and then never seeing them again, in DOA, I met some pretty great people.

but yeah, I'm ranting, so I should stop.

OH and no other game had a more enjoyable online lobby than DOA4! Except maybe Saints Row, but DOA's was so damn fun! though the instant entry into the game probably didn't help with the lag. My God that game was a severe lag fest!

Ok Im done.
