I found a wonderful drawing over at DevArt and joined just to ask the person if I could use it slightly modified as an avatar. I asked by posting a comment below the pic. I noticed that the person has been online in the meantime and hasn't replied to me.

Should I try "Send a Note" option instead?

If you comment it usually shows up as an alert to the artist. the person should see your comment, but if he doesn't respond after a while then send a note.
