I don't even like Star Wars, and I know this is messed up!

It has just been reported a few hours ago that the Walt Disney corporation laid off then entire LucasArts staff and cancelled all future Star Wars projects. That sucks. I know I think Star Wars is stupid, but I honestly can't imagine pop culture without it.

Fuck you, Disney! Details here.

Aren't they starting a new trilogy? Seems like weird timing.

Honestly Disney can go fuck themselves for this. I mean why buy Star Wars just to kill it. Fucking ridiculous I can't believe they did this, what the hell are they thinking?

Weeding out the competition, I guess.

Makes perfect business sense to me. Why own a game making company that only produces just one of your brands when you've got countless connections with companies that will make it for half the cost? You don't have to employ any in house makers, and you can choose who you think makes the best product. Really, I think this INCREASES the likelihood of more Star Wars games because Disney can license to whomever they please, and the first company that says "Disney, we can make a fortune if you let me make Battlefront 3" and negotiates the best deal wins.

It isn't just a matter of making games, but also building game engines.

I did a research paper on Disney last semester for school (about operations management), and personally I think the one thing Disney doesn't understand gaming and interactive media (ie games). They haven't been able to capitalize on a number of things IMO. They go and fund crap games like Epic Mickey, fail to capitalize on Wreck it Ralph, but yet close down LucasArts who have a history of great property games and for developing the technology for them.

They'll most likely outsource the development of 1313 and First Assault if they actually do plan on releasing them.

The first epic Mickey was very well received for a Wii title and a real Wreck-It-Ralph game with all of those cameos would have been near impossible to do. They may have allowed them use of the characters in the movie, but those companies would NEVER play ball in producing a video game. And as I said, it doesn't make sense for Disney to own the company. Why would they make games at a greater expense than licensing the titles to other game companies? It just doesn't make good business sense to keep LucasArts running when you aren't in the business of MAKING games.

I don't think Disney did anything entirely unreasonable.

Yea what a dick I mean whens the last time lucasarts made a decent game

Its unrealistic to keep them around, that's business, they arent making good games, they are just burning through money.

There will still be star wars games, they will just be outsourced to different developers.

Lucasarts is a mere shadow of what it used to be, there were reasons Disney shut them down, not just to be dicks.

EA now has exclusive rights to Star Wars games.

I was wondering how it could get worse too...

Mourning over LucasArts is like mourning over recent close of Atari - the company was more or less shadow of its former self and crying about its shutdown only because familliar name went down is senseless and illogical.

Business is business. There is no place for blind nostalgia and non-profitable property.

it would suck for us to have to buy an online pass to play a starwars game. cuz thats what EA dose. but you know disney screwd up. and i hope the games come back. and i see the buisness side of it. and it makes sence, but whats gonna happen to the books? and how long till marvel gets closed cuz the same buisness opertunity like they have with star wars. what if marvel gets turned over too dc cuz they offer a better deal. what if the comics dont sell as much as they hoped like with epic mickey. are they gonna shut them down too.

oh wait i forgot disney took marvel and made it stupid. like the new spider-man cartoon ultimate spider-man. id rather watch the spider-man from the 90's or read the amazing spider-man or web of spider-man comics. oh and the actual ultimate spider-man comics.
