This one's bubbling away nicely, so lets add it to the growing list of inter-related topics that pander to my interests. Dr. Strange is the long coming film based on the Marvel superhero of the same name. Injured surgeon who learns humility and becomes Sorcerer Supreme via a string of mysterious Eastern circumstances. Good stuff.

If you liked Iron Man and have a taste for MK's early days - you should in theory love this. Customary data dump following. If this turns your stomach, please be compelled to remember to share your interests by starting threads about them in the General Forum. It's fun.

Some of the news reported so far:

- Patrick Dempsey is ready for Marvel magic: ‘I’d love to play Doctor Strange’ [April 11, 2011]

If Marvel executives are interested, Patrick Dempsey is ready to make magic — the “Grey’s Anatomy” star said Thursday that he’d love to play Doctor Strange in a film or even a television series if the situation was right.

“I’ve been lobbying for that,” the 45-year-old actor said. “There’s a whole bunch of people [among the 'Grey's' crew] who are into comics and Marvel, too, on the set and they’re like, ‘Doctor Strange, that’s the one you should do.’ It would be fantastic. It’d be a great TV show, especially for HBO or something like that. I don’t know if I’d necessarily do another show, a drama, that’s 24 episodes again. HBO you’re at 13 and I think that’s much better. It’s just so hard to sustain the quality after three years if you’re doing 24, 25 episodes a year. It all depends on who you have as a writing team — it’s how you set it up, what’s the tone and making sure you’re not locked into this one-season success [mentality], you can’t be afraid to think beyond that.”

- 'Ant-Man,' 'Doctor Strange' Lead Marvel's Phase Three [January 25, 2013]

"'Ant-Man' is definitely part of Phase Three," Marvel's Kevin Feige told MTV News during our recent interview. "Like 'Iron Man 3,' it's certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it's also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we're making the movie."

"'Doctor Strange,' which I've been talking about for years, is definitely one of them," he confirmed. "He's a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he's totally different from anything else we have, just like 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is 'Ant-Man,' which keeps us excited."

- Scott Derrickson to Direct Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' (Exclusive) [June 3, 2014]

Never mind the Ant-Man director drama. Marvel Studios has found its helmer to bring superhero Doctor Strange to the big screen, with Scott Derrickson signing on to direct the Marvel feature.

Doctor Strange, who made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago, in 1963, is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme -- the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. The character was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110.

- Rumour: Jared Leto to play Doctor Strange? [June 5, 2014]

According to the report, Marvel has been keen on Leto for some time, although whether the studio is close to extending him an offer remains to be seen.

Much will likely depend on the forthcoming appointment of a director for the project, with Scott Derrickson having been strongly linked to the position yesterday.

Johnny Depp had been the name on everybody's lips for months, although that talk seems to have died down of late. Expect movement one way or another in due course, with the appointment of a director thought to be imminent...

- Casting "Doctor Strange," Marvel's Master of the Mystic Arts

Casting's going to be very interesting. Gotta think they have another potential Iron Man on their hands - if they can hit the casting just as right. I quite like this list, both for its specific choices, but also a general leaning toward a more senior Dr. Strange. I'd definitely like to see the Sorcerer Supreme embodied by someone with a bit of weight and gravitas to them.

Can't say anybody has really embodied the character as thoroughly as I'd like, but I started warming to Liam Neeson after seeing a photoshopped suggestion on another site.

Leto's a lightweight, Dempsey's made-for-TV, and I can see where people are going with Depp, but it's encompassing one aspect at the expense of others. Will be interested to see where things go. Anybody around these parts got any ideas?

- Marvel Starts ‘Doctor Strange’ Search: Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch Early Wish-Listers

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s some hot superhero dish to take into the weekend. There are reports tonight that Peyton Reed and David Wain are being considered for Ant-Man, but man, we are progressing down the comedy director food chain, and this is starting to feel stale. So how about Doctor Strange? Marvel is putting together its cast list, and I’m hearing that Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch are on it. While Marvel has teased this property with mentions in films including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the film solidified and felt urgent when Scott Derrickson tweeted this week that he will direct the script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

I guess I can kinda see Cumberbatch doing something interesting with it. He could deliver an authoritative tone to the character. Hardy is a bit less easy to read. Neither says much for the warm humanity of the character. Fair enough.

- Marvel Setting Jon Spaihts To Script ‘Doctor Strange’

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios is negotiating with Jon Spaihts to write the script for Doctor Strange, the franchise-launching film which will be directed by Scott Derrickson. Doctor Strange was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960s. He’s a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.

Spaihts is writing Universal’s The Mummy reboot as well as the New Regency alien invasion pic The Darkest Hour and The Black Hole. His script Passengers has Keanu Reeves attached and made the 2007 Black List, but he is probably best known in the genre crowd for being the first writer of Prometheus, which rebooted Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise.

The talks of Johnny Depp makes me fear the movie coming out too comedic.. I have faith in Benedict Cumberbatch, if they so choose him.

I want Johnny Depp to stay as far away from this projects as humanly possible. I want him to stay in his creepy ménage a trois with Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton, and leave Doctor Strange the hell alone.

I think Cumberbatch is a poor choice. I know he's popular right now, but I just don't see Dr. Strange when I look at him.

Strange is my favorite comic character ever, I'm on the edge of my seat with his casting.

- Edgar Ramirez Reveals He’s ‘Talking’ With Scott Derrickson About ‘Doctor Strange’

I chatted with Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez this weekend for his new supernatural thriller Deliver Us From Evil, wherein he plays an unorthodox Jesuit priest and exorcist. At the very end of the interview, I asked him if his Deliver Us From Evil director Scott Derrickson had approached him about being in his next film, Marvel's Doctor Strange.

"We're talking," replied Ramirez. "We've been talking." He wouldn't specify if the part is that of Doctor Stephen Strange or perhaps his nemesis Baron Mordo.

- Exclusive: Benedict Cumberbatch Finally Addresses Those ‘Doctor Strange’ Rumors

“As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London,” he said. “So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?”

That sounds like the part wasn’t out of the question for Cumberbatch, but he wouldn’t go as far as to confirm any official discussion with Marvel to us.

“I couldn’t possibly comment,” he said.

- Joaquin Phoenix Eyed to Star in Marvel's ‘Doctor Strange’ (Exclusive)

As Marvel finalizes surprises for its Comic-Con panel on Saturday, the rumor mill regarding “Doctor Strange” has reached a fever pitch and the actor who has been mentioned most often for the coveted superhero role is none other than three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix, multiple individuals close to the casting process have told TheWrap.

Representatives for Marvel and Phoenix had no comment.

I could maybe go Phoenix as a funky modern Baron Mordo...

- Exclusive: Joaquin Phoenix in Final Talks to Lead DOCTOR STRANGE

After rounds of shortlists and cryptic comments with regards to who will inhabit the character, the trades reported in mid-July that Joaquin Phoenix was finally in negotiations to star in the film. It’s been over a month since that time and there still hasn’t been confirmation from Marvel’s end, so the speculation machine kicked up again recently with word going around that Jack Huston is now “under consideration” for the part. However, we’re hearing there’s absolutely no truth to that rumor, as Phoenix’s deal is currently being finalized. More after the jump.

Despite rumors to the contrary, we’re hearing that Phoenix is absolutely still in line to play Doctor Strange in the Marvel adaptation, with our source telling us that his contract is essentially at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone. Though some believed the length of time it’s taken for Phoenix to finalized his deal was a sign that things might have gone south, it makes sense that an actor of Phoenix’s caliber and temperament would want to ensure that his Marvel contract doesn’t restrict his creative freedom to take on other projects outside the MCU.

The circus continues. Wouldn't ordinarily care, but it's a hoot having this much Dr. Strange buzz.

Dr. Strange fan here.

Been following the film's developments. Whoever Marvel will cast, I have faith in them.

Also: I wonder if they'll give him his traditional cloak, or go with something more modern?
