Looks like you don't have a supported GPU Chipset!
What brand is your video card? What OS are you running?
You're pretty much at bare minimum specs here, so answer my questions, they may help.

I'm not sure what brand the video card is, is NVIDIA a brand? I really don't know much at all. I'm using Windows XP Professional, on Pentium 4.

You're screwed. Your GFX chipset isn't supported. Buy a new one. Thats the only way you'll be able to play Doom 3. Have a nice day.

Actually, I ran into that same problem myself when I first tried to run Doom 3, and I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/ 256 MB! It turned out the issue was that when I upgraded my video drivers, some files were left over from the previous driver install and ended up corrupting my new driver install. I had to download a program called Driver Cleaner 3 in order to get the new drivers installed and working properly.

However, like others here have said, your video card may not be up to snuff, as it were. You say you have an nVIDIA card; it needs to be a GeForce 4, FX, or higher card. (GeForce 4 MX doesn't count, as they're closer in architecture to a GeForce 2 card and John Carmack himself said Doom 3 won't run on it.)

If you have a powerful enough card, and you're getting that issue, download the latest drivers from nVIDIA and also get Driver Cleaner 3 (search for it on Google), and work from there.

Hope this helps...

I think it's amazing 3/4 of your computer has to be devoted to rendering graphics for a game. Absolute lunacy.

You must be new to computer gaming. wink

It's almost always been a semi-joke within the PC gaming community: "How do you know when it's time to upgrade your PC?" "When id Software releases a new game." I actually had to upgrade a couple of components on my machine to get Doom 3 to effectively run, but I foresaw that happening anyway. The only two reasons it doesn't bother me are that A) Carmack's game engines require a lot of horsepower but they deliver a hell of a lot of bang for their buck, and B) I'm going to end up upgrading for new games at some point anyway...

Just my $.02...

hahaha

Yea actually the only game I've ever bought for my PC is/was Jedi Outcast. That game kicked ass and I played the online fighting a LOT, but not any more.

I guess there are different types of people on the computer, some play games the most, some surf the web the most, some do computer graphics the most, some download music the most, etc.. I think I bought/use mine mostly for music and surfin, tho I now have learned some graphic stuff, but I digress..

I think I'll stick with Doom 95 right now tho ;)

ROFLOL! It's so true! That's why I love Sierra and Valve cause they're reliable for the most part on most chipsets. I hope Half Life 2 follows the same trend.

I thought that my copy of Doom 3 was stuffed up but it's probably not, phew (wipes forehead).
Yeh I got that GeForce 4 MX one. So I'll just have to buy the GeForce 4, FX, or higher card and get that Driver Cleaner 3 and everything should be fine?confusedsmile

You'd also need a memory upgrade as well. You've only got 256 MB of RAM; Doom 3 lists 384 MB as the bare minimum requirements. (I totally missed that the first time around; Shinnokxz caught it, though.)

Once you get those, you MIGHT be good to go. Only way to find out is to do the upgrade and see...

Hope this helps...

That tip may or may not help in terms of game performance, but it'll definitely eat up more HD space.

I saw an improvement of about 3 fps when using the methods described on that board, which really wasn't worth it for me.
