Planet is smallest known outside our solar system

By Robert Roy Britt
Space.com

(SPACE.com) -- In a discovery that has left one expert stunned, European astronomers have found one of the smallest planets known outside our solar system, a world about 14 times the mass of our own around a star much like the sun.

It could be a rocky planet with a thin atmosphere, a sort of "super Earth," the researchers said today.

But this is no typical Earth. It completes its tight orbit in less than 10 days, compared to the 365 required for our year. Its daytime face would be scorched.

The planet's surface conditions aren't known, said Portuguese researcher Nuno Santos, who led the discovery. "However, we can expect it to be quite hot, given the proximity to the star."

Hot as in around 1,160 degrees Fahrenheit (900 Kelvin), Santos said.

Still, the discovery is a significant advance in technology: No planet so small has ever been detected around a normal star. And the finding reveals a solar system more similar to our own than anything found so far.

Terrestrial in nature

The star is like our sun and just 50 light-years away. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers). Most of the known extrasolar planets are hundreds or thousands of light-years distant.

The star, mu Arae, is visible under dark skies from the Southern Hemisphere. It harbors two other planets. One is Jupiter-sized and takes 650 days to make its annual trip around the star. The other planet, whose existence was confirmed with the help of the new observations, is farther out.

The three-planet setup, with one being rocky, is unique.

"It's much closer to our solar system than anything we've found so far," said Alan Boss, a planet-formation theorist at the Carnegie Institution in Washington.

*kicks the dog* If you couldn't say in detail, also minding the restriction on religious discussions of that sort, then why say anything?

Maybe that's where Saddam is hiding his weapons of mass destruction.

Or maybe Bin Laden is hiding there. We should send troops there.
...Although they better bring a lot of sun block.

I think there is life out there somewhere besides earth. The "super Earth" Described as the smallest planet next to that Star 50 light-years away, Sounds like The Chronicles Of Riddick(the planet where at sunrise everything gets baked to 1000+ degrees) AND GEORGE BUSH DIDNT LIE ABOUT THE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTIONS. THEY ARE IN LIBYA RIGHT NOW AS I SPEAK. HE SHIPPED THEM THERE.

Cool, but I don't get how this is an Earth-like planet; based on the description, it sounds like Mercury with an atmosphere (does Mercury even have one, I don't remember...).
Earth-like how? Hell perhaps, but not Earth.

When are they gonna look for Planet Snack?

lol, I was going to mention Chronicles of Riddick too... that'd be fucking awesome. I'd live there.

And to everyone who doesn't finding this at least a little bit interesting and cool, just fuck off. Quit being such cunts, there isn't a single thread on this fucking board that isn't stained with all that kind of goddamn bullshit.

Christ.

scientist dont believe theres life because they believe that every creature even outside our solar system needs water to survive. no water means they dont believe theres life like us out there. that theroy in my mind is well bullshit.

very interesting thread!

Im so interested in Astromony, I took a college course on it, and Im only in high-scool.

this is really interesting.

As for life, I mean honestly, out the 4 quadrillion+ star systems out there (not lying about that) theres got to, just got to be life somewhere. It's crazy not to think it. As for water, meh, It really rests on believes. What type of creature? what do they need to live? questions like that should be answered, so water can only come in if you have good enough proof of what you're speaking. There's so many things to talk about with this.

This excites me, although the thin atmosphere and close revolutions make it hotter than hell, and the desolate life and lack of possible transportation make it useless to worry about, this would otherwise be and awesome vacation! ha.

Although Having your birthday every two weeks would get old....heheh...old...get it?

Im done

I wonder how many schools we could have built with the money that was invested in research to find this little planet that we'll never reach...
