Elder Scrolls Online - Discussion / Impressions

Anyone been following the development of this MMO? It's about to launch for PC and it's coming to next gen consoles later this year.
Some interesting gameplay systems involved and the PvP looks INCREDIBLE.

Yeah I've seen a lot of people criticize ESO for using the $15 sub model. I honestly wouldn't mind if it simplifies free-to-play paygates and means free expansions. I've been around enough to have done both with MMO's (Free-to-play micro trans and $15 monthly subs) and I'd honestly rather pay a flat sub if it means free expansion and things not locked behind paywalls.
What race/class/faction did you go with? How'd you feel about the PvE?

I was also in the beta. It's basically Skyrim online. If you're a fan of the series and you're used to the mechanics, you'd probably enjoy it. This was my first Elder Scrolls experience though and I found the combat to be terribly awkward.

Yeah the melee combat in Bethesda games has always felt kinda clunky to me too although it's improved in each version so, I was hoping it was even better than Skyrim.

It's a different kind of clunky, though. For some reason the only word that comes to mind is....sticky. However, I have a feeling that is something that will be smoothed out a bit.
As for me, I was a Nord -so part of the Ebonheart Pact -Dragonknight.

Well in that case I'm not touching it.

How does the melee combat feel though. Like, is it just button mashing or does the whole "paper/rock/scissor" charge attack / block / interrupt mechanics actually flow together? Is there block stun, hit stun, staggers, and effects like that? Gameplay video I saw made it look pretty one-note.

I'd like to give it a try (as well as other MMOs) but I'm just not going to drop money on monthly subscription per game.
I really thing game developers need to find a better game model than MMO's for RPGs.
I really wish developers would do more stuff similar to Borderlands. It has online co-op and leveling, but doesn't change gamers a monthly subscription. Add more people to the party and more customization and a bigger world and i'd be fine with it. Sell expansion packs that add sizable content at a more retail price as well.

Companies launching new MMO's almost always switch to F2P because the monthly subscription model becomes unviable. F2P can be misleading though as that can translate to any number of paywall and mincrotransaction options. I played City of Heroes/Villians for about 3 years with a monthly sub and I didn't mind since the dev's rolled out "free" expansions. Eventually though CoH (and many others) switched to F2P and I think that can be attributed to the fact that players just have so many options in the MMO market now that they're not as likely to stick around.

I'm just gonna pop in with a bump because I picked this game up, and started playing last night. Wondering if anyone else is doing the same and whatnot.
(I'm enjoying it by the way, but I wouldn't have bothered posting if I wasn't)

Played the game at my friends house. Even if it went free to play, I'd be hesitant to play it. I know its a MMO, but since I'm so used to Elder Scrolls and the way their games have been, I tend to forget that its a MMO and I'm not satisfied with what comes in TESO. Just seems... almost bland. The melee part just seems dumb. You circle around an enemy as if there was a ring of grease around them and you just slip and slide while smacking at what it feels like air which in turn, doesn't feel satisfying at all. The bugs in that game are just asinine, but what do you expect, its a Bethesda game.
Overall, 3/10. Purely my opinion though.

Yeah, I can agree with the bit about the combat being a bit lacking. I haven't seen a huge amount of bugs though (maybe a quest marker not working right occasionally, but that's about it). The big reason I'm liking the game though is the world, which is something I've loved about the Elder Scrolls series in general.
For reference, I've been playing a lot of Morrowind lately (finally decided to get around to beating it, I'm doing Tribunal stuff now), and seeing all the things from Morrowind (like Guar, Ordinators, and even Netches) with an HD makeover in Online really won me over.
Elder Scrolls is right up there with Mortal Kombat and Mario (or any mainstream nintendo property). I don't play MMORPGs, and I'm upset that this game came out at all. It's probably fun for those who enjoy MMORPGs, but I'm waiting for a Skyrim sequel lol.
