I feel Noir had such potential to be great, but the pacing in that show is so god awfully slow that it became a great pain to get through.

I'm curious as to why you say that. It was 26 episodes, and even the episodes that didn't directly advance the plot helped flesh out Mireille and Kirika (and even Chloe in episode 12) as characters. Can you be more specific?

Manly combining is a beautiful thing! Gurren Lagann is like Salvador Dali writing anime on heroin. Speaking of mecha, I might be the only one who liked her and Shinji:

Actually, Asuka Langley You Sank My Old Last Name Battleship Soryuu is rather popular. It's Shinji on the other hand who gets no love or respect from most viewers

Comedic genius. Though I do not mind Shikinami (a.k.a. in theory Sohryuu on sedatives)

Actually I know why. Shinji the Uberwimp is more or less the mirror reflection of otaku, shielded escapists who are basically told in NGE to get out of their dream-lives and actually do something meaningful. His other half is actually meaningful angst instead of "emo". Both are basically the housing of the prime examples of repressed mental disorders. And that is what makes them so tragically funny.

I'm flattered that you actually found that funny. I don't mind Shinji at all and find him to be a very intriguing character because he is so mentally distraught and unable to act upon anything. The fact that any body would react and try to do something in some of the situations where he helplessly sits there waiting to be saved does come off as annoying but when looking at the context, makes sense and isn't all that contrived. Once you get past that it's more like ok is it smart writing or pompous which I don't think it's the latter.

I don't like or hate Shinji, as much as i find him to be an interesting character. His mental growth and his growing maturity through the course of the anime are great to watch, and the end of the EoE movie was just pure genius. Asuka on the other hand, well let's just say if she wasn't such jailbait I'd probably hate her to no end. though her dependence on the Eva was hilarious when you saw what happened when she couldn't use it.

The series would have been much better served if it was half that at only 13. There countless episodes where nothing of importance happened. Not all of the episodes fleshed out the characters such as the one where they are fighting the girl in the casino which was basically a stand alone episode. The overall atmosphere of a lot of episodes was very quiet with not much action occurring to the end (and I don't mean gunplay but in the sense of something). Alot of shots were just them wandering around town with nothing really happening. If I didn't have such high expectations for this show, it probably wouldn't have bothered me as much. Cool concepts and all, but too stretched out that put the show at a crawl of a pace

Episode 3 definitely wasn't stand alone, bruh. Its events led directly into episode 5 where they get the document that reveals the identity of the Soldats, which is a big turning point. Furthermore, it shows that Mireille isn't nearly as heartless as she first seems, especially with the ending at the gravesite.

I'd like to see these countless episodes where you say nothing of importance happened. I find episodes 4 and 7 to be the only real filler episodes, with no characterization or plot point.

As far as pacing within the individual episodes, I admit, it is not fast by any means. I saw these breaks in action as chances to absorb the atmosphere created by the wonderful scenery and music. I highly doubt Noir would have been as memorable if it weren't for the atmosphere it created. Its slow unveiling is what made it shine.

But I guess this is all individual preference. Personally, I can't stand shows that rush things. Like "WAY TO REVEAL MR. BIG BAD DURING EPISODE 2!" kinda stuff.

Temper, temper now. I criticized an anime, not you or your overall taste. And I'll be kind and not take that last paragraph as an insult on my anime taste seeing as I haven't even said anything to incline such a thing. But I guess if you consider something like Legend of the Galactic Heroes "REVEALING MR. BIG BAD SHOW FILLED WITH STUPIDITY" then I must be an idiot.

I found episodes such episode 3 to be practically standalone because hell, yeah that little bit of detail did get revealed, but it wasn't some big revelation. If that little bit of plot development and character development meant that it's not stand alone, then the greatness that is Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: SAC would have no standalone, episodic episodes either because every episode has some little details revealed on the plot and many developments on the character but don't necessarily add up to a great deal to the overall arching plot.

If anything, it's snippets like that doesn't ruin Noir for me. Not at all, it can be quite enjoyable to see little snippets and bringing things slowly into frame like I said with Bebop and GitS but again, like I said before, the episode pacing is absolutely horrible. Yes the scenery and artwork for Noir is something I particularly loved as it was well detailed, cel shaded animation that gives it a classy, timeless. elegant look hat many shows of the time period started to shun due to computer technology, but all the ambiance in the world can't help the overall poor pacing. Not counting the last third of the show where things did get fully in swing as they were going after Althena once and for all, every episode just seemed to go by very slowly. If anything, that is what makes it feel well nothing that important there, no true big revelation here.

Now this show isn't god awful or horrendous, or even bad at all. Was just disappointing overall to me. So don't get offended by my critique as one of my favorite shows Evangelion has been critiqued in and out the wazhoo since it came out. And seeing as I'm also a major Lupin III fan (someone for the love of god fully sub the second series and fix the Engrish Pink Jacket series subs!), I also can't say all of the animes I enjoy make you think about the questions of life. But don't be offended (I've been assuming so I may be way wrong here lol) cause I really am not trying to be prickly here

Again, I did find some very enjoyable elements such as the artwork and the ambiance and mood with the quietness we both mentioned in certain shots and settings ( I particularly remember the episode where Kirika meets the painter as a standout in such a sense) it was able to set and the idea of not showing any blood for any of the grunts killed as they were scene to be just mindless, shells, machines of the Solodats is a terrific idea. I find the organization idea with it being headed by Althena to be interesting as well, I just think the show would have greatly benefited from a shorter episode count to make it more tighter. Man, more thought went into this post on an anime I haven't seen in over a year than the thinking I need to do at my job, weird Hey brightside, I love the other two characters you chose so don't fret or worrywink

I didn't mean to come off as offended and I apologize if I insulted you personally. It's just a show, lol, I'm not trying to go all internet nerdrage crazy over it. tongue

I was just curious to see your reasoning and viewpoints (and debate them, heh). I'm thankful for your responses, you explaining your views helps me understand some of the criticisms that I was previously unaware of and that, in its own way, helps me understand the show more fully and appreciate it even more. It's difficult to find actual discussions about the plot online, though there do seem to be copious amounts of lesbian fanfiction. ...Much to my frustration and dissatisfaction.

I have this habbit when discussing things that I get carried away and ramble on like that and create monster walls of text. And na you didn't offend me, I thought you may have just found my wording to be harsh is all. I can see why though there isn't a lot of discussion about Noir though besides lesbian fan fiction. It's not really that well known and it is a girls with guns series that gets the otakus all excited. Just hit mute for them and enjoy.

And I think you mean BRIGHT SLAP, and not bright sidetongue

Well, at least she has several horrible and valid excuses, among them PTSD and HPD.

Aside that she is the equivalent of an emotinal nuclear strike, if you pay attention it turns out she is the most clever character in the entire show.

Among them, remember the Jericho Wall analogy? That was deliberate, too bad Shinji being as inept around women as possible never catched on. Also, taaaaake a little bit of a better look on what she watched on TV and check those, and then the plotline. Fuckin' genius that show is. Though not that much as some people fawn around it. And yes, Asuka is hillarious in the spare moments when something isn't going horribly wrong.

BTW, Ghost in the Shell: I have to say Batou, and the major, but only in the series Stand Alone Complex. The movie version didn't catch with me as I didn't find any legitimate reason for her to meld with the Puppetmaster aside from complete alienation. It didn't sit well with my ideas, but nevertheless excellent movies. Especially the second.
