I heard about this a couple days ago and found it interesting.

Full article at bbc.co.uk

"Hawking backs down on black holes"

Stephen Hawking says he was wrong about a key argument he put forward 30 years ago on the behaviour of black holes.

The world-famous physicist addresses an international conference on Wednesday to revise his claim that black holes destroy everything that falls into them

He will tell the Dublin meeting that he now believes black holes may after all allow information to get out.

His new findings could even help solve the "black hole information paradox", a crucial puzzle of modern physics.

Professor Hawking has not yet revealed the detailed maths behind his new ideas, but some points have leaked out from a seminar he gave at the University of Cambridge.

Gary Gibbons, another physicist at Cambridge who attended the seminar, said Hawking's newly defined black holes did not have a well-delineated "event horizon" that hid everything in them from the outside world.

"It's possible that what he presented in the seminar is a solution," Professor Gibbons told New Scientist magazine. "But I think you have to say the jury is still out."

Little and large

Professor Hawking's own work was responsible for generating the black hole information paradox.

In 1976, he calculated that once a black hole forms, it radiates energy and starts losing mass. This radiation gives no information about matter inside the black hole and once the hole disappears, all the information goes with it.

"It used to be thought that once something had fallen into a black hole it was gone and lost forever and the only information that remained was its mass and spin," the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge told the BBC.

"But some time ago I discovered that black holes are not that black after all. They give off what has been called 'Hawking radiation'. Because of this emission black holes will lose mass and eventually evaporate completely.

Now my understanding of quantum dynamics is all turned upside down. tongue It's pretty interesting though about Hawking's theory that something entering the quantum singularity isn't lost forever.

Anyhoo...

damn im lost...but anyway i always had a dumb theory that the world was made from clusters of other planets when a giant blackhole came and sucked them all into it.. And im a christian and believe in God but maybee sum ppl survived on sum planets and started the human race.

First, check your inbox. wink

Second, the 'past' idea of black holes was that once matter entered and passed through the 'event horizon' that matter would end up somewhere on the other side. Huh. Pretty interesting theory you had. LOL!

Interesting! I'd like to know more about this "Hawking radiation" b/c I thought nothing could escape a black hole, even photons which have no mass. And because of some conservation law of physics (it's been ten years, you'll have to excuse me) - if the black hole is losing mass then it has to be going somewhere.

As to whether or not a black hole leads to an alternate universe, I guess one has to determine whether or not such an alternate universe can exist. If so, then I see it possible. (Too complicated for me to explain - it all has to do with bending time and space, etc..)

See if you remember the Disney movie The Black Hole, at the end when the crew escapes in the shuttle and goes through the black hole, they end up, apparently, on the other side headding towards Earth.

I've been intruiged about the phenomenon ever since I saw that movie. The thing is, if we are to accept Hawking's new theory, then I kind have ti know about the significance of the 'event horizon' since he asserts that matter eventually escapes. Then what happens at the center? confused confused

See what the man has done? tongue Now I have twice as more questions than I did three days ago. Thanks a bunch Dr. Hawkings! grin

So does this mean there is no event horizon? Since matter isnt enitirely destroyed, then i suppose it can still escape. So that means that there is no event horizon in a black hole, only way to find out is to visit one i guess...grin

Is it possible that we can get to other points in space or other dimensions through black holes? Could be possible, as long as u dont go to where they went in the "Event Horizon" movie...

Shiiiiiit! I'm not sure about the existance of a 'event horizon' anymore. Even though science fiction has used the 'former' theory to it's benefit, it was asserted that once matter reached the other side of the 'event horizon', all understanging of physics would no longer be applicable to understand where the matter ends up. Now after Hawkings turn around..... *Shruggs shoulders*

I think the theory of wormholes seeme more logical as a theoretical means to travel to another point of the universe, eventhough they are deemed unstable, in theory of course.wink

It's funny, after watching 'event horizon' not long ago I went on the internet and did some reading - so I could understand black holes a little better. Now I've read this info of yours GD, it's set me back again! Like I said, until we can study them from closer I suppose it will all be speculation. Interesting speculation though...

If a black hole has that much gravity, then matter can't be destroyed, just added onto it. That's how those things get like they do, more matter eventually becomes more gravity.

It's already beleived that not all the matter a black hole takes gets put onto it. A handful of it gets taken on a curved route and shoots out from the poles of the hole away from the monstrosity.

As for a black hole just "disappearing", that's bull. How does a black hole just suddenly stop having sucking power? While I don't buy that, I do theorize that they can get too big eventually, and something can happen then (the repulsion of positive neutrons against each other becoming too powerful), though I'm no scientist, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express.

ROFLOL!

*applauds!*

Ooooooh yeeeeeah! You're DA MAN JACK!grin

LOL! The theory of black holes goring larger is the one thing that really has me questioning Hawkings idea that they disapate over time. I really don't see the reasoning there. How can that theory account for the existance of 'super massive black holes' then?

*confused*
