- New action-packed trailer arrives for Godzilla: watch now [SPOILERS?]
It's worth saying straight off the bat that this latest trailer reveals quite a lot of detail about the new film, so if you want to go into the cinema moderately in the dark, it might be worth steering clear.
For everyone else, it's a whole heap of building-crushing, explosion-tastic fun!

- Hollywood's Godzilla Is an 'American Fatty,' Say Japanese Fans
- Japanese Fans Think Godzilla Has Gotten Fat on American ‘Cola and Pizza’
"Whichever way you look at it, he's an American fatty," posted one fan after promo images and trailers went online in Japan.
"He got fat in America on cola and pizza," tweeted another fan.
A common Japanese image of Americans is one of expanded waistlines -- and not without some justification. Obesity levels in Japan are below 4 percent, versus around 36 percent in the U.S.
Comments have been rolling in all over social media, film fan sites and chat rooms this week.
"He's couch potato Godzilla"; "It's got no neck"; "He Supersized"; and "Marshmallow-Godzilla?" were just a few of the reactions from fans.
Some were less harsh about the new Godzilla but still unimpressed: "It's chubby and cute," wrote one.
"It looks like a seal," said another.
No speculation regarding his lack of intelligence? Ha ha! racist

- Guillermo del Toro Talks Hypothetical PACIFIC RIM vs. GODZILLA Movie, and His HEAVY METAL Approach
"Hypothetically, I would love the fuck out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain. But I don’t think there are plans on that. I don’t even know what direction they’re taking Godzilla in. I know somewhat that it’s grounded differently."

It would be a sick throwback to the old kaiju movies of the past for sure. I'd see the hell out of a Godzilla vs Jaeger movie.

- New ‘Godzilla’ Clip Showcases [MINOR SPOILER REMOVED] [SPOILERS]
It's probably a little late to start hiding these particular spoilers, especially when they're out in the world in headlines, but y'know... A feeble gesture. If you're looking to go into this move completely clean and you're reading this thread, maybe take heed. Minor film content spoilers will probably start appearing. Keep the major ones boxed up, though, guys.

Godzilla, all things considered, was good. The first act was shaky, and the second act was... problematic, but the final act of the film is unbelievable. If you're a fan of the character, the lore, or just the idea itself, watch this movie. It takes the true essence of the creature and brings it (back) to life, which I never thought they'd have the balls to do.

Because in this movie, you're not going to get the Tokyo Terror. For this movie, they took the better of the two concepts: the defender of Earth. The fucking King of the monsters himself. THAT'S the godzilla I can get behind. Anyone who wants the brainless beast who arbitrarily destroys shit can watch Del Toro's Pacific Shit.

Just watched it in IMAX 3D, amazing. Seriously recommend it, it's roar still has me shaking.
People need to realize that Godzilla doesn't need to be the main focus of the movie. People are complaining about how he doesn't have enough screen time. According to my friend, who's an obsessed fan (literally), he explained it very well to me and a few others about this issue. He never had a lot of screen time in the previous movies. How they did this was really well. That if you didn't like that he didn't have enough screen time, you wouldn't have liked the other movies. I agree. I didn't want more screen time of the beast. He doesn't need more screen time. The fights I liked how they showed it in the background. It was done well.
In my opinion though, I wished Bryan's character lasted longer. He's a great actor, I thought he should have had more time to show off. His son, however, is very forgetful. Him, the wife and son I didn't care for, the other characters I thought were great. I like how they showed what governments would do if this were a real thing. I could see cover ups.
And I love that they didn't reuse an existing enemy for the enemies. And they have the creepiest egg sacks. Yuck.

I think people who have only seen something like Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters, Tokyo SOS, or Final Wars wanted something along those lines or something like Pacific Rim. Just kaiju on kaiju porn on the big screen. Thing is, Out of the 29 (now 30) movies that have been made, very few in the franchise were actually like that. This is a good start though. It lays the groundwork for a franchise that's been gone for a decade, and if it does well, we'll hopefully get another one in 2 to 3 years.
I will say that aside from Godzilla the new monster designs suck. It's very boiler plate Hollywood and it really could've benefited from somebody like Del Toro having some creative input. I'd love to see a brand new take on Ghidora, or Gigan. This first batch really doesn't cut it.

I think what bothered people is that there were other battles in the movie that happened off-screen. There was a moment when the monsters start throwing punches, and then the film suddenly cuts to the events of the next day. That was frustrating, at least for me. If they didn't show those scenes because they didn't have the budget to create them, then I don't really mind. If they were cut for the runtime, then that was a bad call.

Agreed. People would not have minded the lack of Godzilla as much if the human element didn't fall so short. And really...

Bryan Cranston essentially died for no reason. It was the most written-out-of-the-script death I've seen in a while. Keeping him alive and putting him in the military scenes would have done wonders for this movie. One reason Aaron Johnson was so bland is that he didn't have any supporting cast to work off of. His relationship with his father is the only thing that made him show any personality, so once Cranston was gone, he became incredibly sterile. The dialogue with his family didn't amount to anything other than, "I love you. Be safe." You can't build a character on that.

I think I prefer the Pacific Rim style of kaiju movie over the Godzilla one now that I've had more time to process them both. That isn't to say that I wouldn't like to see a sequel to this one, now that the groundwork has been established, but I prefer the more in your face approach of Pacific Rim as apposed to the ball-tickling tease that this movie took to get to the third act.

Exactly, the build up was essential to the movie. If you just had him all over the movie, it would take away the mysteriousness about him. So glad Godzilla's back,

- ‘Godzilla’ Sequel in the Works at Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures
Gasp. Well, I'm not sure if they should do sequels. It seems like it would make it less special if Godzilla just kept coming back. Hollywood gone mad, obviously. It couldn't possibly work.

I dunno, I'm not really sharing everyone else's sentiments about the movie. I feel like most of the movie was just extremely dull and uninteresting. I really enjoyed the beginning part and the ending part of the movie, I just found the middle part to be a drag. Most people say it's all some awesome buildup and suspense, but I felt like it was more like getting sick and waiting to get healthy again.
It's not that I don't get what they're trying to do, it's just that I don't think they did as good as they could have with it. The movie mostly focuses on human characters, with some monster scenes and small appearances of Godzilla. For the most part we just see little bits of what the monsters do, and the aftermath; for example, it might show a monster knocking down a building, then it will cut to a news station showing an entire city destroyed, mostly offscreen.
A movie I feel really did this right was Jaws; there was a creepiness and suspense through the entire movie, but you don't actually see the shark until the end. The main difference between Jaws and Godzilla was that Jaws was filled with interesting, endearing human characters. I just felt like the characters in Godzilla were boring, flat, and two-dimensional, for the most part.
I did really like Godzilla though. I'm glad they took inspiration from his original design (even though he looks kinda chubby) instead of making him that weird T-rex thing. I'm glad he fed off radiation instead of a lot of fish. And I'm especially glad that him (and the other monsters I guess) aren't really bad guys, nor are they good. They just do what nature would have them do and they just happen to not give a crap about people being in their way. I liked the philosophy that Godzilla is sort of a keeper of balance (there should have been more characters like that Japanese dude).
I'm totally fine with this movie being more than just a big monster action flick, but in order for that to work the parts that aren't just big monster action scenes have to be good. Maybe I need to see it again, maybe there are some deep character-driven moments in the middle part of the film, but right now I think if the movie was half it's length, had less humans and more Godzilla, it would get a thumbs up.
