Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, dudes!

First off, Dr. King Jr. was a major badass.
Second, in the U.S. (not sure if this is the same in other countries), the third Monday of January is reserved as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This man change the world and rid it of racial hatred through non-violent acts of protest.
His most memorable mark is a speech he gave in Washington D.C. in 1963, known to us as the "I Have A Dream" Speech.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge his wife, the late Coretta Scott King, who I view as the voice of all unknown black achievers. A powerful, yet highly unknown fact about Coretta Scott King is that not only was she an activist for racial equality, but gay rights as well.

The two together were an unbeatable tag team combo, and it pains me to know that neither of the two lived long enough to see their respective dreams come true.
Nevertheless, I say R.I.P. to them both, and I thank them for all they have done, not only for the United States, but for the world.

Thanks so much for this post, man!
I luckily got the chance to meet Coretta Scott King when i was 11 or so. I didn't realize the enormity of who she was until years later, unfortunately but I'm very glad to have had the opportunity. R.I.P. you both! I also really don't understand why people don't see the correlation between Racial opression and LGBT oppression...makes no sense. Either way, thanks again for the post!!
HAPPY MLK DAY!

It really blew my mind that I had received such a sanitized and neutered look at MLK in my public education and--of course--in the news media in general. I never heard of his endorsement of welfare for the disadvantaged and poor, workers rights, separation of church and state, affirmative action, and racial compensation until after my HS education. His criticisms of western capitalist, American imperialism, and the privatization of commodities like oil were oddly absent as well. I just find it incredibly sad that today the man is usually used for nothing more than political extra-credit among policy makers, special interest groups, demagogues, and some of the most corrupt in the gubernatorial and corporate world.
This would be dubbed "radical, socialist rhetoric" in today's political climate. Any activist figure-head espousing these kinds of beliefs today would be completely dismantled and ignored; and that's exactly what retroactively happened to King. The offenders I listed above kept the parts that the status que could stomach and mischaracterized (or even erased) the parts they couldn't. MLK deserves better than that.
Anyway: Happy Martin Luther King Day!

"You can’t talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro without talking about billions of dollars. You can’t talk about ending the slums without first saying profit must be taken out of slums. You’re really tampering and getting on dangerous ground because you are messing with folk then. You are messing with captains of industry... Now this means that we are treading in difficult water, because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong...with capitalism... There must be a better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward a Democratic Socialism."
