I thought guys cheated because of instinct? See, with most animals (well, mammals, anyway), a couple won't stay together for their entire lives. A male will court and mate with numerous females during his life, and the more he does so with, the better his odds of passing on his genes to the next generation, which is his instinctive goal in life.

It's a little harder to see why women cheat when you look at it from a biological/instinctive perspective. If I come up with a theory on that, I'll post it.

I got one. Instinctively females flaunt everything they have in order to mate with as many males as possible for offspring. Look at the Pea-cock. For a human its similar women want every male they can see to find them valuable lol not just one.

Although I am not a believer that humans and animals are linked in anyway, but its a theory nonetheless.

Interesting theory, but it's the MALE peacock that flaunts its feathers. Female birds have dull colors that blend in with the background; the males are the attention-getters, and it's they (the males) that pursue the females.

Another possibility is this: a female animal is likely to choose a mate with superior strength or other physical characteristics, and, therefore, presumably superior genes. This, however, is where the human characteristics of reason, compassion, and social stigma come in: a girl's boyfriend or husband may be more financially secure, or a more stable serious partner, than her lover. Also, she may not want to hurt the boyfriend/husband by dumping him, and thus will satisfy her desires without him knowing (what he doesn't know won't hurt him), and (assuming nobody finds out about the affair) she won't be percieved as a slut (enter social stigma) for dumping one guy just to go out with another.

I've never cheated on any of my girlfriends.

I have been cheated on twice by my first girlfriend, the first time only two weeks or so after we've had sex, the second time about a month after her first escapade. The first guy was bad enough: they fell in love with each other, but other than making out, nothing happened. The second guy, well, she didn't even know his name and they had sex. It was then I decided to break up with her (she was insane too, by the way).

Yes, being cheated on feels absolutely sickening. I remember feeling as though I would just fall over, flat on my face, and keep falling. I was so numbed I lost all feeling in my hands and feet, and choked by both anger and sadness.

I love my current girlfriend to death (much more than I ever loved anyone else), but if she cheated on me, I would most likely break up with her. Not only is the experience itself very painful, the recovery process is, too. Each time you are with that person, you realise someone else has touched her the way you might be doing it, you think that if she closes her eyes she might think of him, etc etc. It's horrible.

And as for reasons men and women cheat on their significant other, I don't think a clear division along the lines of sex exists.
