There is nothing in this post that breaks any rules. Promise. :) All the information that I am posting is 100% legal. The only thing that isn't exactly legal is roms, but those are easy enough to find anyway.
Ok, I will try to make this as easy to do as I possibly can.
1. Windows only.
2. a net connection. Broadband preferred, but this DOES work with 56k, and quite well, most of the time.
anyway, on with the tutorial....
First thing is an emulator. these are completly legal. get the correct one here ( http://www.zophar.net/Files/zsneswv1.36.zip ) Right click and save as.
After you get the emulator, unzip it and put it into a folder. Then go to www.z-net.tk and go to the downloads section. Download the 1.41 BUNDLE... it's the easiest way by far to get it to work.
3rd, make a rom directory for the snes games that you will want to play online. Wether or not you have any roms is a moot point as of yet. They are easy enough to get, but MUST be unzipped top play them online...
Install z-net, and open it and follow all the setup directions. It's self-explainatory..
Join the gamesurge channel. Heres how. ( http://img34.photobucket.com/albums/v102/fatherbrain/screen.gif )
From there, it's a snap.
I'll be waiting for you!

Way too much work. I'll wait for October.

takes you all of 5 minutes. It's real simple to set up, and once you got it going, you'll love it. :)

ZSnes is good but this is all old news. Mame32k works much better and they are the arcade games, not the snes versions.

There's actually not much work because of two simple things that need to be corrected:
1. You don't need to actually make a /roms folder. You can put the files with ZSNES.exe and the rest and it'll still be fine (though you may need to direct the emulator and .ini file to the folder.
2. The only reason you would need to extract a rom file from its zip file is if the names of the files inside the zip files do not match!!
Here's an example, let's say you have the following zip file, with the following file inside, compared to who you're playing with having an unzipped file:
You have MKII.zip (Mortal Kombat II.smc inside)
Your opponent has Mortal Kombat II.smc unzipped.
This won't cause any problems, because the actual file on both ends is named the same. Now, look at this:
You have MKII.zip (MKII.smc inside).
Opponent has Mortal Kombat II.smc unzipped.
Now, you can't just rename MKII.zip to Mortal Kombat II.zip, because the actual file inside keeps the name MKII.smc, and if you view the zip file with WinZip or anything, you'll see it'll have that name. And this time, you'll get a "File not found" error if you try to connect a game, because of those actual files not having the same name. Then, you'll have to extract the file and rename it directly.

A wee bit wrong there. Zips don't work for online play. sorry. Unzip them to play. otherwise, yeah, not much work needed.

Ah, very sorry. I'll have to look at it, but I've checked my roms, and I do have several unzipped ones I used when ZNES broke with several games (had to re-install it to get it working again).

Well, I'm not entirely sure how ZSNES checks for roms. As far as I can postulate, it either checks the checksums of the rom images, or it checks the internal checksums of the rom itself.
If it checks the rom image's checksum, a zipped rom's checksum is not going to match an unzipped rom's checksum because the make-up of each file is obviously different.
If it checks the rom-itself's internal checksum, then there's a chance it could find a match. Why filename is even a factor I'm not sure...maybe so it doesn't take forever checking the checksums of all the files in large rom collections...
edit:
Forgot to mention I was just writing a program that would effectively do the same thing as Z-Net, only it wouldn't be mIRC-dependent, like zbattle. I was actually writing it to replace zbattle, since zbattle seemed to be pretty much dead, but now that zbattle is being resurrected I've decided not to bother. Luckily I only worked on it for a couple of days before someone decided to bring zbattle back, just got the client and server started...
