if mortal kombat never existed, who do you think would be the top dog in the area of fighting games?

It would be Street Fighter.Street Fighter was MK's only good rival.Street Fighter and Kings Of Fighters would be the only 2 games. And maybe Killer Instinct.

Yeah. Without Mortal Kombat Killer Instinct would be way more original and would therefore gain the fanbase MK has managed to compile over the years.

The would-be MK fans would look for a bloody, gory, violent outlet and seeing as how KI was the second in the genre it would definetly take over.

I've always preferred KOF, Street Fighter, and Virtua Fighter to MK.

Have you thought that if MK never existed that many of the fighting games that exist today may have never been made...or many of the games period? Remember it was MK that started out with the blood and guts. It showed that it was profitable and controversity in a game is good advertisement. Without MK all of the more violent game may have never been created.

I'm not sure if MK was the first fighter to have blood and guts, as Time Killers was also released in '92.

True, but where is Time Killers now? How many people have even heard of that game? Time Killers never made it into the news like MK did. I think because MK used actual pictures of people rather than 100% computer graphics. *shrugs* Or perhaps MK was in more arcades than Time Killers. I only found Time Killers once and enjoyed playing it but the next time I went back to that same arcade it was already gone. It was MK that rocked the boat not Time Killers.

Regardless of the curreent status of the series (or lack thereof), this was the comment I was replying to
Remember it was MK that started out with the blood and guts.

Uh-uh.

The creation of the ratings system would simply be because of some other game.

For once, there's actually a good (original?) post worth reading on MKO, since a long while.
Great concept, "if Mortal Kombat never existed".

I always did like Street Fighter, back in the day when I was playing MK.
I concidered both games equally good.
What pushed me over the edge was MK's first movie, it really pulled me in.
When I rented it for a week, I watched the tape from beginning to end, over and over and over and over.. well, let's just say that by the end of the week I knew every dialogue, every scene, everything that was said throughout the movie.
And I couldn't get enough of it.

I don't know where I'd be had it been without MK.
Street Fighter wasn't that worth while, the movie is also definitely not to be concidered "good" at all, on the contrary.

I really wouldn't know what I'd be playing or doing, heh.
Maybe play random games, without having a big favourite.

It'd most likely be Street Fighter and maybe Killer Instinct. Street Fighter would be the most likely of the two considering how popular it was.

I haven't forgotten about it (in fact, I mentioned the chicks that appeared in the game as my picks for hottest video game babe).

I'D recommend it only to see what all the controversy was about, 'cause the game pretty much sucks ass.
