So I decided to pick up Super Street Fighter 4.

I quickly found that it is indeed VERY different from Mortal Kombat.

One thing I noticed that it was a lot harder to link combos. The timing is very meticulous. Is there an easier way to link combos? I sometimes feel that I am just button mashing just to get the hit to connect in Challenge mode. Like the simple MK MP combos. I just don't get the timing.

Also, I've been looking up stuff on the internet, and I've seen some notation such as cr. MP.

What is cr.? does it stand for close-range?

Help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

I think "cr" means crouch. If you go and do the trials, you'll see how many of the combos can be done with each character. But they are indeed VERY hard to pull off. Mortal Kombat has easy combo potential put into the gameplay, Street Fighter doesn't.

You may want to give Juri a try. I think she has the most MK feel to her out off all the Street Fighter characters. Street Fight does require faster timing with button presses for combos compared to MK. I feel like I'm horredious at the game compared to MK. It is more difficult.

Yes, cr. MP. Stands for Crouching Medium Punch (or Crouching Strong) which is down + Y (on 360) / Triangle (on PS3).

Some links are indeed ridiculous in SSF4, I suggest that you start off with simple and fairly damaging combos, such as jumping mp > standing mp > H dragon punch etc. And think about links later on.

Links are extremely difficult to understand since you are basically using hit stun to deliver unblockable hits (meaning that when you deliver the first normal hit, the enemy has a stunned animation for an extremely short period of time) This is why you should check out some frame data for help:

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2010/may/10/frame-data-super-street-fighter-4/

Oh, and please, don't try to dive into Trials too much. Most of the combos there are difficult to pull off and still deliver small damage. SF is not about long combos, the damage scaling doesn't show any mercy.

Edit: Tutorial for beginners in SF4.SF4 is a good fighting game but for me SF3 3RD Strike is the pinnacle of Street Fighter games, best gameplay ever on a SF game, but not so friendly in execution like SF4.

I'd start off with basic 2-hit jump in combos, like jump in roundhouse > crouching roundhouse, then work your way into jump in attacks > specials, then work 2-in-ones into that, such as jump in attack > ground attack > 2-in-one into special.

Once you get that down, you can work your way up to the more advanced stuff.

sorry for the late reply guys, thanks for all the tips.

i've delved into some of the forums dealing with frames and such. I've been messing around with Dan and Ken and a little bit of Cody. It's all so much different from MK, but it's still fun. A little something to keep me tided over

btw, in case you didn't know, Dan is a parody character and you shouldn't use him too much unless you're really good or if you're playing for fun. He is intentionally made to be a really bad character.

A rival company of Capcom made a fighting game of their own, their two most popular fighters (Ryo and Robert, I think it was) are heavily likened to Capcom's Ryu and Ken. And then Capcom created Dan to parody the rival company's Ryo and Robert.

Don't worry, he isn't that TERRIBLE in this game. His hurricane kick and dragon punch are pretty good, and he's got a secondary super, the Legendary Taunt which you can use to link Ultras in a way you weren't able to link normally.

(Normals and specials can be cancelled into the Super Taunt just like any other super, and you can change the Super Taunt into an Ultra when the super has begun.)

ah ok, i was wondering what the point of his super taunt was.

i've been working with ken. his target combo is more "MK" styled in its execution. I also completed my first challenge trial! with Dudley.

i have another question,

are jumping attacks overheads? may be a dumb question

No, not all of them. Overhead means an attack that can only be blocked high (although I guess you already knew that.)

I suggest checking frame data for that too. I know E Honda, Sakura and Ryu etc. Have some command normals (back/forward/down/up + an attack button) that are overheads. E Hondas Sumo Smash is an overhead I think. And Evil Ryus EX Axe Kick.
