Im Considering Becoming a Composer for NRS
Im Considering Becoming a Composer for NRS
I'm considering taking my fans' advice and pitching my music to NRS.
I know I'm nowhere near as good as Dan Forden, but it's been my dream to become a professional composer, and I'd love to compose for Mortal Kombat.
I mean, my tracks are getting lots of views on Youtube, good comments, and Google even wants me to become a Youtube partner.
What should I do, guys? Should I take a chance? Should I go for it?

It sounds good but they want to hear some originals not just for MK, I'm sure you have plenty so bring those along with you if they give you an interview.

This may be one of those completely obvious overlooks on my behalf...but why did you quote me? I'm not the one who wants to compose for NRS. Not to sound like a dick, text can do that.

Good stuff.
Where did you get the Ermac footage in the MK Kompilation vid? ive never seen it before.

My honest opinion: I think you have potential. I don't think your songs are as good as the 2d music, MKD music, or movies soundtracks, but I think you can deliver that level of quality with enough work, focus, etc. So I also say go for it.
For what? Music too? Or something else?

I'm usually a pretty critical asshole when it comes to video and music and stuff, but it's just an opinion, I don't really like the style to much but I think it's well put together, listened to about 5 tracks, only one I was really interested in was the Pit II one. Anyway keep crackin' on it, you're on to something.

Wouldn't you need a degree in music? I'd imagine that's pretty important.

I doubt it. It wouldn't hurt to have a degree, but you can learn to compose without one, and there are plenty of career musicians who don't even hold a high school degree (or an equivalent, unfortunately).
But as for the OP: What've you got to lose? I don't know if NRS is hiring, but it's not as if you're going to lose everything in the event they decide not to hire you. There would still be plenty of other opportunities. All you can really do is make sure your stuff is the best it can possibly be before you pitch it to them.

Ahh, I figured it was something like that, but I wasn't sure if part of that answer was aimed at me. Carry on friends.
I believe you should at least get a degree in music. I'm not sure how true this is, but as of lately, a lot of jobs require degrees of some sort. It wouldn't hurt to take music classes and get a degree in composing.
Plus, I strongly recommend building a portfolio in all of your works to show if you ever have the chance to go down for an interview. These kinds of things are crucial so they know what they're looking at.
And to answer this question:
Either in animation itself or concept artist. If neither, I can just work as a secretary or something else if the internships aren't what I expect them to be.

Oh neat-O! Would be sweet if a mko member makes it in.
From one working in one highly competitive, creative industry (3D FX) to another (music),
I say *definitely* go for it,
but don't get your heart set on it too much-
you can get really hurt in the end.
I've wanted to work at Dreamworks for *so long*,
and I've had several interviews but have never been in a position to accept them (bound by other contracts).
So Dreamworks has become a very sore, sticky point for me.
I don't go see their movies anymore- period.
Make sure you don't get *that* set on working there-
it can be a real heartbreaker.
Still, there's no harm in trying.
Send them your stuff, and if they offer you a job,
TAKE IT, whether you're under another contract or not

No disrespect intended. Pitching to NRS is one thing, working for NRS is quite another.
Having a portfolio of original work would be better.

I actually have a portfolio that stretches back six years, and quite a few of the tracks I have on Youtube are in fact original pieces (i.e. Jade's Desert, House of Pekara, Mortal Kombat 9 Character Select).
With your first sentence, it seems you're implying that my consideration is foolish. Regardless of whether or not you intended to disrepect my dream or my intentions, I know the comment was not at all positive, not saying you should be a sweetie pie.
Your post as a whole gives me the impression you look down on my aspiration, and that you've already assumed I'm not going to make it with NRS. Now, I'm not saying that I am going to make it with NRS, but like many other users have already stated, I have nothing to lose, and even if I don't get hired, there are plenty of other opportunities.
One thing I do know though, I do have talent.

No doubt, I could use some more practice.
And I'm definitely not gonna to get going on it until I'm financially stable.
Still, I really do want to take this shot, but I wanted to get some words from you guys before I do. Can't go in alone, you know?
I do know though, I'll never be as good as Dan Forden. lol
That wasn't at all what I was saying.
This is probably why I shouldn't post.
I do not dismiss your talent. I merely wish to make you aware of the grandiose nature of your topic title.
You cannot consider becoming a composer for NRS anymore than I can consider becoming Mozart. You can apply, you can hope to make an impression, but the matter is completely out of your hands. The consideration is not your to make.
And by having a portfolio of original work I mean exactly that. Not work inspired by Mortal Kombat or in any reference to Mortal Kombat. The very worst thing you could do to impress Mortal Kombat people is bring them more Mortal Kombat things.
If you seriously have aspirations to become involved in music production at a professional level, you must understand that you will have to live by this credo, "What does the client want?"
Good luck to you, and I mean that.

With no disrespect whatsoever, the topic being grandiose is merely your perception.
It simply states the greatness of my aspiration. I myself stated nothing at all is guaranteed, not even their listening to my music.
I'm sorry (seriously, I am) if you felt I had that much confidence. Anyone who does have that much confidence is a fool, and is terribly out of touch with reality.
Also, I apologize for assuming you were declaring my failure, though I still feel odd towards your post's first sentence.

This is even better than my thread about trying out for SuicideGirls.com.

Once again, I have a portfolio that stretches back six years.
I've composed enough pieces to create twelve qualifying LPs, each of which haved already been named (for my own amusement, to be honest).
With no disrespect whatsoever, you should ask questions before making statements that would implying someone has or hasn't done something.
Instead of, "You need a portfolio of original work," ask, "Do you have a portfolio of original work. It would gvery much help to have such."
Also, it seems you may have assumed that my work is on Youtube is unoriginal by the titles I gave them. If that is the case, I must inform you that:
1.) A mere title does not keep a piece from being original.
2.) I often give my work different titles when releasing them to the public, for obvious reasons. Yes, some tracks were made specifically for MK, but that is not nearly the case with even half the music I compose [and release], not saying you stated or thought that. Just pointing it out just in case.

So are you actually doing this thing or not? Because that would be way radder than crying at Bezou.
